Employees at Cactus Jack's Casino will hold a memorial for Mike Shields this Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. inside the Poker Room at Cactus Jack's at 420 North Carson St., Carson City.

Shields died Nov. 11 after being struck in a crosswalk by a motorcycle as he was returning from Cactus Jack's, where he was an employee. The accident remains under investigation. The Nevada Highway Patrol has had difficulty in locating the family of Mr. Shields. Friends say Shields would have celebrated a birthday Tuesday.

Food for Thought would like to thank the Carson High School Football Program for hosting an outstanding food drive. In effort to return some support to the community the football program wanted to do something that would have a great, positive impact during their bye week. A few ideas were tossed around before settling on Food For Thought as the organization they would like to help out.

Food For Thought is a local organization that provides weekend food for school aged children in the community that are chronically hungry.

The Carson City Plaza Hotel and the Empire Ranch Golf Course and Mallards Restaurant have a donation barrel at each location to support Ron Woods Family Resource Center Holiday Food Drive.

Silver Stage High School students received an inside view of the construction trade industry on Friday morning during a Western Nevada College presentation for Careers in Construction Month.

Recently, a few naysayers have written to local newspapers, criticizing the effort of the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture, a 501(c)(3) organization, to raise funds to preserve historic resources within the Comstock Mining District, a National Historic Landmark.

There’s something special about a good parody. I always get a laugh when something is turned on its head and shown in a new comedic light. Lately, I’ve realized I can do that with my own fallible actions. When I use humor on it, I render it powerless, shut up the nagging negatively in my head, and can actually laugh at myself.

The second Free Fishing Day in 2014 in California will be this Saturday, Sept. 6. The first was way back on Saturday, July 5. On Saturday you will be able to fish wherever you like without the need to buy a fishing license.
However remember that you will need to abide by the rules and regulations that govern whatever waters you will be fishing.

A very young Northern Nevada boy has set out on a very mature mission on behalf of his community. Four-year-old Garrett Triner says he doesn’t want to see people go hungry and told his mother, Randi Vigna, he wanted to do something about it after he saw a homeless man on the sidewalk.

The boy asked his mom several questions about hunger and food and why people sometimes go without. That’s when the idea came up to do a food drive, which is happening this weekend with a drop off Sunday at Ross Gold Park in Carson City from 2 to 5 p.m.

California has two Free Fishing Days in 2014 which are close to holidays. The first is Saturday, July 5, aligned with the Independence Day holiday weekend, and the second is Sept. 6, right around the time of Labor Day.

Thomas Jefferson said, “If you want something you’ve never had, you must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” If you want to become known in the community, you must do something to become visible to those who are involved.

If you want to lose weight, you must shift your attitude and activities to create the change. If you want to make more money in business, you must adjust what you are doing (even if it’s finding a way to clone existing customers and magnify existing success). The point is you must do something you have never done before. This involves feeling a little bit of something icky — fear.

Make time to visit The Greenhouse Project and a few things come clear: Agriculture is, after nearly 15 years defunct, alive and well on Carson High School’s campus, and the student population whose class time is integrated here, are developing life skills that will serve them in future, while currently realizing they have a hand in making a difference in their community.

Memorial Day came and went a couple of weekends ago and, although I was sick during the holiday, many others were thankfully healthy. Some used the opportunity for a three-day weekend to go get a little R&R in: go to the beach, take a break, spend time with friends and family, and unwind. It’s what happens on Tuesday, after we come back to the reality of our lives, businesses, ups and downs, that can be confusing — the post-vacation blues.

Making Western Nevada College the best educational experience possible for students brings pleasure to Rob and Dorothy Ramsdell. Over the past 15 years, the Carson City couple has been instrumental in improving programs, facilities, equipment and students’ educational opportunities at WNC.

Their unwavering generosity and support of WNC recently touched the college’s Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Construction Management program when they made a lead gift of $100,000 for the an endowed faculty chair position.

Bike to Work Week has started. I hadn’t even left the house Monday morning when I read the news that a bicyclist and a vehicle had collided in town. Thankfully, it sounds like everyone is OK. My last article was a list of bicycle commuting tips. This list expands on that information, but focuses more in the area of safety.

Immunize Nevada and the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health met Tuesday at Carson Tahoe Women’s Health Institute for an event to educate Nevadans about Text4baby and to encourage expecting and first time mothers to do something for themselves this Mother’s Day and enroll in Text4baby.

The speakers, including Senator Ben Kieckhefer, from Washoe District 16; Vickie Ives, a representative from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health; and Julia Peek, a mother of two and Text4baby user, spoke about the benefits of the program in helping build strong Nevada families.

This is a reminder that Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, opens its 2014 fishing season on January 01.
 Here's some information that might entice you to travel there to fish.

This is my annual pre-Christmas reminder that Topaz Lake, which is located along U.S. 395 at the Nevada-California state line, will open its 2014 fishing season, one half hour before sunrise, on Wednesday, January 1.


If the weather is decent, if you don't have a massive hang-over, if you like to fish and if you don't have anything else planned, this could be a fun way to start the New Year. Are you interested?

Carson City residents Karen Abowd and Mary Fischer, will be honored tonight at The Atlantis Hotel and Casino, when they receive the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada’s 2013 TRIUMPHANT Awards.

Karen Abowd will receive the Environmental Leader award for her work with The Greenhouse Project, a non-profit community greenhouse located on Carson High School’s campus that teaches sustainability and new agricultural principals and produces food for the community. Mary Fischer will receive the Community Service award for her work with Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides (G.R.O.W.), a non-profit she founded in 1997 with the purpose of beautifying area roadways using landscaping and art.

All hands were on board Saturday as the Women's Council of the Builder's Association of Western Nevada answered the call to help two Carson City homeowners in need of upgrades and repairs.

Ramsey Circle homeowner Nora McGinley fought back tears as a team of local contractors with power tools and building materials arrived at her doorstep with one mission in mind: Lending a helping hand to a good neighbor.

"I'm so grateful. It's just wonderful to know there are people in our community who go out of their way on a Saturday to do something like this," said McGinley. "It's more than I ever imagined."

This is a plea to the readers of this great news site to educate themselves about the Common Core "State" Standards being implemented in our schools, and to join with the growing numbers of parents and concerned citizens who seek to reverse course and do something better before it's too late for our children and grandchildren.

All I can say is: What was that? No, not about the 49ers pitiful performance on Sunday but about how the 49ers organization is handling the All-Pro Aldon Smith situation. Aldon Smith was arrested for his second DUI in two years on Friday night after he crashed into a tree in San Jose. The 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said earlier this week that the consequences would not come down by the team but rather by the league itself. Here is part of his statement:

Not only is the task time consuming compared to a simple inner tube installation, but you also need an air compressor, a piece of equipment I don’t have. The main mass of a rare meteorite observed in the skies over Carson City, Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe that exploded over California’s Sierra foothills in April 2012 will be preserved for current and future scientific discoveries, thanks to the collaborative efforts of five U.S. academic institutions.
