American Heart Association applauds Nevada passage of statewide Stroke System of Care

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval officially signed Senate Bill 196 into law Wednesday, creating a statewide stroke system of care and paving the way to help save thousands of lives each year.

Ronald McDonald House Charities® Northern Nevada (the Reno Ronald McDonald House® or RMHC® Northern Nevada), a home-away-from-home for families living 30 miles outside of Reno that have a child receiving critical treatment at an area hospital, has selected the winning applicants for its RMHC® U.S. Scholarship Program and will recognize them at a ceremony at the Atlantis Casino Resort Spa Friday, May 8, 2015. Of the 38 students, 64 percent are the first in their family to attend college and several have overcome challenges such as severe illness, family depression and financial hardships.

New York City got in on the festivities with its first ever fireworks display for the Lunar New Year; I've included a YouTube video, just in case fireworks really are lucky.

Carson's Donnelly Earns National Praise

Sage Donnelly doesn't mind overcoming the odds. She's actually proven to be quite good at it.

At 14 years old, Donnelly is much younger than most of her competitors. She's also likely the only one dealing with type 1 diabetes and celiac and thyroid disease. But none of that stopped her from winning the 2014 Female Paddler of the Year Award, presented by Canoe and Kayak magazine.

Partnership Carson City is hosting a free Diabetes Class in Spanish. The class begins on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at the Boys and Girls Club, 1870 Russel Way. The class is every Thursday morning for 7 sessions from 8:30 am until 11:15 am. (the first class will end at 10:00). Standford University designed this program so that diabetics can improve their health. People with diabetes, pre-diabetes, and family members of diabetics are welcome to attend. The class will be conducted in Spanish only. To register call 775-885-1055.

Nevada health officials say Churchill County experiencing high rate of flu cases

As of the last week in November of 2014, a large increase of influenza (flu) has occurred in Churchill County. According to the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Churchill County has experienced 61 cases of influenza in this flu season, almost all occurring within a two week period. Churchill County has not experienced such a large influx of influenza cases in such a short period of time since 2009.

Ronald McDonald House receives furnace, thermostat donations

Four new heating, ventilating and air conditioning, furnaces and four programmable thermostats with sensors were installed at a reduced cost at Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern Nevada, a Reno non-profit that serves as a “home-away-from-home” for families with children in area hospitals.

Sierra Air, Inc., Carrier Corporation and Sigler Wholesale Distributors coordinated the procurement, transportation and installation of the energy-efficient components, providing approximately $23,209 of cost savings in equipment, material and labor.

Local Wound Care Center Joins Healogics, Inc. to Raise Awareness of Diabetic Foot Ulcers

The Center for Wound Healing at Carson Tahoe Health, a member of the Healogics network, is participating in the Healogics National Diabetes Campaign from Oct. 27 to Oct. 31. One of nearly 600 Healogics managed centers; The Center for Wound Healing at Carson Tahoe Health offers advanced therapies to patients suffering from chronic wounds like diabetic foot ulcers.

Program directors across the nation will dedicate the entire week to visiting local physician offices to provide education to help staff identify diabetic patients with or at risk of having ulcers of the lower extremity.

Carson City teen kayak phenom wins prestigious Female Paddler of the Year award

Despite being nearly half the size and half the age of many of the women who are her inspiration and mentors, 14-year-old Sage Donnelly of Carson City has gone big time, winning this year’s prestigious Female Paddler of the Year Award, presented by Canoe and Kayak magazine.
