If you know Shanell Cavener, then you are tremendously lucky. If you work with her, or she taught you, then the luck is multiplied tenfold (hopefully this is the right math to use, Shanell?).

Shanell Cavener is this year’s Carson High School Teacher of the Year, and she could not be more deserving of the honor. Shanell is quiet, often working behind the scenes in ways people would not even realize in order to benefit the lives of all who enter CHS.

The Department of Homeland Security has set the new deadline for REAL ID enforcement as Oct. 1, 2021. Acting Secretary Chad Wolf issued the following statement on the deadline extension:

CARSON CITY — In an effort to bring relief to Nevada motorists affected by the closures related to COVID-19, Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles have issued an automatic 90-day extension for expiring driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations and other DMV documents. Governor Sisolak signed a Declaration of Emergency authorizing the extension March 20.

The University of Nevada, Reno announced yesterday that students were being asked to vacate the dormitories and that no refunds would be given. However, following public outcry, the university changed their policies and have now announced refunds will be given.

Switchboards at the University of Nevada, Reno lit up Thursday after the university issued an unusual directive: all students living in on-campus residence halls who have the ability to move back home should be packed up and gone within the next six days.

Carson City officials are continuously monitoring the level of risk of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) to the community. In close coordination with Carson City Health and Human Services, the City Manager’s Office along with City departments in an abundance of caution are coordinating the closure of some offices to take additional measures to slow the spread of respiratory viruses. President John Cassinelli has announced that Travel Nevada and the Nevada Commission on Tourism have awarded the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center a $3,500 rural tourism marketing grant.

Several candidates, from the Democratic, Republican and Independent parties are vying for the seat of Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District, currently held by Mark Amodei who is running again to be re-elected. The 2nd Congressional District covers the northern portion of Nevada, including Carson City, and the counties of: Churchill, Douglas, Elko, Eureka, Humbolt, Lander, some of Lyon County, Pershing, Storey, and Washoe.

Fourteen area middle and high school students were awarded cash prizes for their entries into the Fleet Reserve Association Branch (FRA) No. 137 Annual Essay-writing contest on Feb. 29 at a luncheon sponsored by the branch Auxiliary in Carson City, held in their honor.

Hello to everyone in Carson City. My name is Destiny Hernandez, and I am a senior at Carson High School. At its Program meeting on Wednesday, February 26, Carson City Soroptimist will feature John Malcolm, the Prevention Education Specialist for Safe Embrace, an area non-profit dedicated to educating the community and providing services to survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

Looking ahead to Wednesday, we can expect sunny skies and continued highs in the mid-50s. Midweek events include a Dayton chamber breakfast with the founder of the Desert Pigs cleanup nonprofit group. Plus there's the first of 5 days of Valentine-themed festivities that begins at Carson Mall; an open house at Bethlehem Lutheran School, a CASA information hour, a Carson City School District meeting regarding proposed middle school zone modification. Plus there's a yoga class, Salsa dancing at Yaple's Ballroom, country and pop dancing at Carson Lanes, a safety workshop for women and more.

With sunny skies and daytime highs in the 50s, Tuesday is shaping up to be a great day around the capital city. Muscle Powered will host morning and evening walks, plus there's an assortment of meetings, club gatherings, art showings, a local school board meeting and more. At the end of the day, there's no better way to cap off the evening than by celebrating, with your sweetheart, music about love. That will be what's happening at Living the Good Life as Mile High Jazz Band and our celebrated vocalist Jakki Ford will do just that presenting "Jazz Sampler for Sweethearts." Read on for details.

Mile High Band Association’s 2020 Jazz and Beyond Festival Committee is sponsoring an art contest for Carson City, Lake Tahoe area artists. Selected entries in the competition may be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover.

Last week, I wrote about overwhelm and how to approach it. But, there’s one part of the process of overcoming overwhelm that will trip you up if you don’t understand it - setting priorities.

Priorities fall under a number of categories:

• Critical priority. (Example: Something that has to be done in 24 hours, often has a consequence if not done)
• The deadline is approaching. (Example: Hard deadline, no moving it, often has penalties for missing)

Winterfest is here, and the theme, Carson's Got Game, is more than just a nice motto, it is a series of multiple physical board games, playground games, and video games. According to CHS physical education teacher and Leadership adviser Ann Britt, “the class color teachers will be playing a game of life-size Hungry Hippo during the assembly Jan. 17, and we will be doing a door decorating competition with judging taking place Jan. 21; the top three winners will receive a gift card to Starbucks.”

The Carson City Business License Division has been authorized by the Board of Supervisors to temporarily waive late fees for business license renewals due to unexpected delays in implementing new licensing software.

Carson City Soroptimist will present the Live Your Dream Award, five scholarships, and recognize four Girls of the Month during its January program meeting. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required. It will be Wednesday, Jan. 22, noon to 1 p.m., at Glen Eagles Restaurant.

Soroptimist International of Carson City is asking the public to nominate women for its annual “Women Helping Women” Ruby Award. The Soroptimist Ruby Award honors women who, through their professional or personal efforts, are making extraordinary differences in the lives of women or girls.

Today, Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020 is the beginning of a new year, a new decade and also a new set of laws. More than 70 laws enacted by the Nevada Legislature last year take effect either in whole or in part today.

They include several major health care initiatives — including a ban on surprise emergency room bills, a tax on vaping products and a requirement that hospitals use patients’ preferred names and pronouns — as well as laws that will benefit employees, including paid sick leave.

Nevada Humanities will hold a series of free informational grant meetings in Henderson, Las Vegas, Reno, and Elko in January 2020. These meetings are open to anyone interested in learning more about applying for project grant funding from Nevada Humanities.

Nevada Humanities offers grants of up to $5,000 to nonprofit organizations and government entities, such as libraries and schools, to fund public and educational programs in the humanities.

The historic Carson City building that was Cafe at Adele’s at the corner of North Carson and John Street was set for demolition, until it was offered to whoever wants it, so long as they move it from the property to its new home by March 1, 2020.

Everyone has a disability of some kind, but most learn how to cope with or overcome it; however, not everyone with a disability is aware enough to recognize whether or not they even have a physical challenge. These individuals have a severe and profound physical and neurological disability, cannot care for themselves, need full-time assistance, and are some of the kindest human beings in the world, many of whom are students in the Carson City School District and at CHS. Each year, students in the CHS Comprehensive Life Skills program make crafts to sell at the annual CHS Craft Fair and give as gifts.
