Nevada Day Steampunk Ball Friday welcomes Nevada birthday revelers

Here it is and here is where all Nevada Day revelers local and coming in from all points of the Silver State ought to be Halloween night. The first ever Nevada Day Steampunk Ball, a costume fundraiser for ages 18-plus, is at the Carson Nugget Ballroom Friday from 7 p.m to midnight.

The first ever Nevada Day Steampunk Ball, a costume fundraiser for ages 18+, is at the Carson Nugget Ballroom Oct. 31, from 7 p.m to midnight. The event’s theme combines the formality of old-time nostalgia with a light-hearted science fiction twist, and includes high-energy dance music by Nevada’s own Rock-N-Roll Rebels, a no-host bar (for those 21+), sweet treats, and costume contest with prizes. Don't stress if you're having trouble coming up with Steampunk costume: consider dressing Victorian, western, or in the costume of your choosing.

Nevada's steam driven Sesquicentennial celebration culminates in Carson City with the Saturday, Nov. 1 Nevada Day Parade. This year’s parade theme, “Happy 150th Birthday, Nevada” encourages Silver State revelers to salute Nevada’s Oct. 31 1864 admission to the union as the 36th state.

"We at Nevada Day are very pleased to be adding three new events to this year's Nevada Day Celebration, in addition to bringing back reoccurring favorites," said Nevada Day committee president Ken Hamilton.

Monthly swing dance party

High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s monthly dance party will be the Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop, 6-10 pm July 26 at the Carson Nugget’s Grand Ballroom, 507 N. Carson St. Vintage 1950s-‘60s dance music will be played, and costumes of that era are encouraged. The fun includes dance, hula hoop, costume and limbo contests and door prizes. Cost is $5 for car show participants, $7 for members of HSSDC and Reno’s Biggest Little Swing Dance Club, $10 general for individuals and $15 for couples.

Free workshop in traditional Chinese dance with Nevada Arts Council artist

There will be a free workshop in traditional Chinese dance with Nevada Arts Council artist Xian Na Carlson on Monday, Jan. 27, from 4 to 5 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 West King Street. All ages and experience levels welcome.

Celebrate the Chinese New Year at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center Feb. 8. 2 p.m. with traditional Chinese dance featuring Nevada Arts Council artist Xian Na Carlson.

Xian Na Carlson began learning folk dances as a child growing up in Zhangzhou, China. From her aunt she learned the Tuan Shan, (fan dance), the Xin Jiang regional dance and Tai Ji forms.

Sierra Nevada Ballet Presents 'Giselle' Dance, Music and More

The Sierra Nevada Ballet takes the stage this summer to present, Giselle, which is possibly the best-loved of all the world's ballets. This profound folk tale comes to life through music, drama and over 30 professional dancers who will share this story of doomed love ... complete with jealousy, madness and vengeful ghosts. According to the ballet’s artistic director Rosine Bena, “Giselle is steeped in the tradition of ballet and conveys the poetry that makes this great production a must see this summer”.
