It's Your City: Concert for center that helps Carson City homeless to feature Tom Petty tribute with Michael Furlong Band

In this edition of It's Your City, host Cortney Bloomer talks with DeeDee Foremaster, director of Do Drop In, a local center in Carson City that provides services for the homeless.

The two discuss its "A Face in the Crowd" fundraiser that will be happening this Saturday, March 7, a Fuji Park featuring the music of Tom Petty presented by nationally renowned tribute music sensation The Michael Furlong Band.

Big-Band Jazz X2: Adults, middle schoolers host Carson City concert Tuesday

Carson City, Douglas County firefighters face off in friendly competition to raise money for stair climb

The Carson City Fire Department is on scene near the Fox on Carson Street, and traffic is facing a slight delay, but there’s no accident. Instead, the delays are being caused by local residents slowing to give what they can to the firefighters raising money for “Climbing for a Cure,” a rigorous nation-wide stair climb in Seattle, which raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

South Carson Street project design finished, bidding process to begin

The South Carson Street project design is complete. The project team is pleased to announce the completion of the project design after nearly a year of design progression since the initial public kick-off meeting on December 11, 2018. During the design phase, the project team has conducted over 20 public meetings to gather useful feedback on various project features.

Carson City School District, trustees haul in awards at 2019 NASB Conference

The Carson City School District was a point of highlight at the Nevada Association of School Boards annual conference in Reno, the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. The school district and trustees hauled in nearly a quarter of all the awards (4 out of 19) among the 17 districts statewide.

Carson City's Do Drop In fundraiser this Friday at Governor's Mansion

The Do Drop In at 1895 E. Long Street in Carson City is home to the Rural Center for Independent Living and the area's only day center for the homeless and mentally ill. It receives no government subsidies, so it relies exclusively upon community support for the funds needed to keep its lights on and doors open.

The Road Ahead at Tahoe: Redevelopment, Collaboration, Community and Climate

I recently had the pleasure of speaking to several hundred Tahoe City residents on a warm summer evening in August. I was there for a celebration that has been a long time coming.

Residents gathered in the parking lot of the blighted Henrikson Building to take a ceremonial swing of the hammer — to say goodbye to an eyesore of a building whose useful life came to an end years ago. They were also there to celebrate what will soon take shape as Tahoe City’s first new hotel in more than 60 years.

Carson City Parks, Recreation & Open Space is pleased to announce our 3rd Annual BOO-nanza Halloween event on Tuesday, October 29th.

Last year, approximately 1000 children participated and we expect a bigger crowd this year. In an effort to create a safe and family friendly Halloween experience, Carson City Park, Recreation & Open Space has partnered with the Carson City Library. The Community Center will be opened for trick or treating, haunted house, and outdoor carnival.

No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. This upcoming Monday is the Aquariids Viewing Party starting at 12:00 a.m. Tuesday (technically Monday night).

Carson City Community Support Services Grant awards $380K in program funding

The budget for the Community Support Services Grant was finalized at the most recent Carson City Board of Supervisor’s meeting, which allocated nearly $400,000 of grant funding for various programs helping our local communities such as helping homebound seniors, dental care for local youth, emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and more.
