Common Core State Standards

Carson City students show KNPB they are ready to learn

Kindergarten students at Empire Elementary School were treated Thursday by a visit from educators with KNPB Channel 5 in Reno. The visit was part of KNPB’s Ready To Learn workshops, which bring special learning topics into classrooms around the Reno-Sparks and Carson City areas.

Thursday's guest educators taught students about the forces of motion, KNPB Ready To Learn Facilitator Joy Foremaster said.

K-12 education standards through the looking glass

In a previous CarsonNow comment, Carson GOP Chair Maurice White called for Dr. Steve Canavero of the Nevada Department of Education to "be immediately dismissed for his public disrespectful conduct."

Now Peter Hennessey is calling James Milgram and Sandra Stotsky "widely known and respected experts on eduction standards."

Assemblyman O'Neill hosts Common Core curriculum forum Tuesday in Carson City

Newly elected Assemblyman Phillip "PK" O’Neill, R-Carson City, will host a forum Tuesday in Carson City at the Legislative Building for lawmakers and citizens. The forum is being led by opponents of Common Core State Standards.

Citizens for Sound Academic Standards welcomes the public to participate in the program which it says it will present both sides of the issue. The Common Core State Standards Initiative is an educational initiative in the United States that details what K-12 students should know in English language arts and mathematics at the end of each grade.

I Am Now Afraid of PK's Puffery

I recently received an overly large mailer from PK O'Neill, a candidate for Assembly District 40. What he says is disturbing. He pontificates without solutions. He seems more concerned with cliches than real issues.

PK is not alone when making political claims. For another example, see Maizie Harris Jesse's letter “Candidates need to research lt.gov.job duties” in 17 October Nevada Appeal.

The Shortcomings of COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS.

Good news in the campaign against Common Core

This article is a slight rewrite of the an e-mail sent by the president of stopcommoncorenevada.com 1. We've had the best media coverage yet. Superintendent of Public Instruction Dale Erquiaga was on Jon Ralston 2/06/2014 discussing Common Core (from 17:50-24:40).  Jon read three of our emails and used them to pose some pointed questions.

WNC Child Development Center launches new programs

2014 might need to be called the year of the child at Western Nevada College’s Child Development Center. A statewide initiative to enhance child care quality, new curriculum standards, and the introduction of an assessment process for teaching strategies are all part of the new year developments at the Center on the Carson City campus.

Common Core -- The Legal Case Against It

The adoption and implementation of Common Core (CCSS) in Nevada is patently ILLEGAL. Everything they are doing, everything they have done, and the way they have gone about it is illegal.

On the Nevada side,

According to the NRS 389.520, the authority to determine what STANDARDS will be imposed on Nevada's schools is assigned to the Council To Establish Academic Standards.

NRS 389.520

1.  The Council shall:

(a) Establish standards of content and performance, including, without limitation, a prescription of the resulting level of achievement

Rethinking Common Core... it is still a Huge Step DOWN

The Common Core "State" Standards are a major change in the purpose, content and methodology of educating children from K through 12. According to some reports, not only are the college entrance exams being revised to be Common Core compliant, COLLEGES are also said to be considering adapting the change.

The question is, the change from WHAT?

The question is important because Common Core is either a step up, or just another step further down the road of the ever lower "progressive" standards that America has been experimenting with for over a hundred years.

Common Core - A Stab at the Heart of American Education

They say 45 states have adopted the Common Core “State” Standards for grades K-12. If you have not heard about them yet, that’s because they rammed it through with the same “you have to pass it to find out what’s in it” arrogance that gave us obamacare. The two of them are pillars of the “fundamental transformation” that candidate Obama promised in 2008.

This is a plea to the readers of this great news site to educate themselves about the Common Core "State" Standards being implemented in our schools, and to join with the growing numbers of parents and concerned citizens who seek to reverse course and do something better before it's too late for our children and grandchildren.
