Happy birthday Nevada: How, when and where to celebrate Nevada Day 2016 events

Nevada is one of the few states that celebrate its Admission Day, and boy do we throw a party. A parade, competitions of strength and facial hair, hot air balloons, bloody marys, a carnival, pow wow, and free chili are just a few of the festivities awaiting the capital city on Saturday.

The party begins Friday this year with a ribbon cutting celebration of the 'new' downtown. The Nevada State Museum hits its 75th Anniversary this year and will have a day full of fun and surprises. Keep reading to see where you need to take advantage of all the best this holiday weekend has to offer.

Nevada State Museum in Carson City has big plans for Friday's celebration of 75th anniversary

Coin club teams up with Nevada State Museum, Carson City for National Coin Week celebration

In the world of coins, Carson City is a collector’s delight. Famous as the home of the U.S. Branch Mint that made some of the rarest of coins from 1870 to 1893, the Nevada State Museum, Carson City, hosts a special celebration of its coin-making past each year for National Coin Week.

The Railroad Museum of Northern Nevada has rides on the McKeen Motor Car special for this weekend. Pinkerton Ballet begins its annual run of the Nutcracker at the Bob Boldrick Theater tonight. Get inspired for your own decorations at Candy Cane Lane: Carson Valley Inn’s drive-thru light show. Happy birthday to the Blue Bull; beer and cocktail specials start at noon.

It’s fireworks Friday here in Carson City. Harley Davidson is throwing a party for Street Vibrations with live music, vendors and more. Look to the sky around 8:30 p.m. to catch the fireworks show. Spruce up your resume and head to the Community Center. A job fair with more than 50 employers opens its doors to the public at 2 p.m. Go Big Blue! The varsity football game against Hug High School starts at 7 p.m. following the Homecoming Float Parade. Catch some live music at Living the Good Life or Westside Pour House. You’ll find a reason to laugh at Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget.

The end of August already: how did that happen? This summer seems to have flown by. I guess that’s what happens when you’re having fun. Those of you gearing up for Burning Man have just a few last days to prepare for the playa. And those headed to Western Nevada College have this one last weekend before it’s time to hit the books. I Love Carson City's Weekend Event Summary: August 22-23

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

The kids are finishing their first week of school, but the summer hasn’t quit just yet. The annual Jazz and Beyond Festival is heading into its final weekend, and as always, going out in style. Tonight, celebrate Count Basie’s 111th birthday with the Mile High Jazz Band downtown on Third Street. Carson Tahoe Medical Center is holding its 5th annual HopeFest concert headlined by the Young Dubliners. Carson's own, Molly Seals, will be performing, as well.

Dealers, collectors, admirers and amateurs will find fun at the 2015 Carson City Mint Coin Show and Fair. Professionals will buy, sell and trade money and offer expertise in a lecture series during the two-day event Aug. 21-22.

The weekend has arrived and it’s bringing a plethora of activity with it. Car lovers will want to head to the Silver Dollar Car Classic at the Max Casino, known as the Carson Station just a few days ago. The Classic moves to Mills Park for the weekend. If the Mustangs and Broncos you prefer are horses, rather than Fords, you’ll want to grab a ticket to the Bull Riding Competition at the State Fair. Carnival rides, circus performances, and live music will keep everyone entertained. Make sure to catch the shuttle from the Casino Fandango parking garage: parking at Fuji Park is extremely limited. ‘Break a leg’ to the cast of Peter Pan. Youth Theater Carson City opens tonight at the Community Center.

Are you ready for the weekend, Carson City? I know that the Taste of Downtown is hard to beat, but the new Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly has thrown its hat in the ring. Live music, vendors, competitions that test motorcycle driving skill and moustache growing ability. The brewfest and tasting is tomorrow night, but the fun will begin today at noon. Shine up your hot rod, the Karson Kruzers’ Run Whatcha Brung Show hits Fuji Park tomorrow, but you can register and show off your ride tonight in the Carson Nugget Parking Lot.

Reno Coin Club and State Museum mark National Coin Week with special presentations, coin press

The Nevada State Museum celebrates National Coin Week April 19-25 with special activities Friday and Saturday. Co-sponsored by the Reno Coin Club, all activities will be held at the museum that was formerly the Carson City U.S. Branch Mint.

Historic Coin Press No. 1 will operate both days from 10 a.m. to noon, and 1 to 3:30 p.m. The press will mint silver .999 fine medallions for sale to the public.

Carson City, statewide events in May celebrate historic preservation and archaeology

Since the early 1980s, May has been a month for celebrating historic preservation and archaeology in Nevada. Agencies and organizations have teamed to spread awareness of archaeological and historic preservation efforts throughout the state and encourage both residents and visitors to explore and learn about Nevada’s significant archaeological and historical treasures.

Nevada Sesquicentennial commemorative license plates available through 2016 at DMV

Although the year-long celebration is over there are still opportunities to show your Nevada pride including a limited-edition Nevada 150 license plate. The commemorative plates were designed to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Nevada statehood and will be available for purchase through 2016.

Last chance to order Nevada Sesquicentennial Medallions

Carson City, Nev. – Only 35 sets remain of the silver Sesquicentennial commemorative medallions sets, according to the Nevada 150 Commission. As part of the Sesquicentennial celebration, the Commission authorized a limited, numbered edition of 150 sets of Sesquicentennial medallions made out of pure Nevada silver. Each medallion was individually pressed on the Historic Coin Press No. 1 at the former U.S. Mint located in the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.

And local band Iron Age will be filmed at their gig tonight in the 11th Frame Lounge at Carson Lanes for a ‘rock-umentary.’ Where ever you end up tonight, you’re bound to have a good time.

Sharp skilled dealers will buy, sell, trade and offer their expertise with free appraisals during the two-day event today, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 23. Held this year at both the Nevada State Museum and the Carson Nugget, the fair includes activities for children, prize drawings, lectures, coin sales and free appraisals with admission.

Governor, lieutenant governor to attend Nevada Sesquicentennial third medallion first strike ceremony

On Friday, May 30, Gov. Brian Sandoval, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki and Kirk Clausen from Wells Fargo, the official sponsor of the medallion program, will be joined by the Nevada 150 Commission and special guests, to strike Nevada’s third sesquicentennial silver medallion for the State’s 150th birthday celebration.

The third design, selected by elementary age students throughout Nevada, features some of the State’s most iconic landmarks including the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, the Reno Arch and Wendover Will with the Nevada Sesquicentennial logo on the back side.
