Fishing Report For the week of May 25 through Memorial Day

Here is this week's fishing report for the week of May 25 through Memorial Day weekend. The report is for rivers, streams and lakes in Northern Nevada, Northern California and the Sierra.

Outdoors with Don Q: Six-day tour of Northern Nevada

Beginning Wednesday, May 18 and ending on Sunday, May 22, Elaine and I took her 82-year-old Mom, Mary Bottoms, on a six-day tour of rural Nevada. It was her first-ever trip to all kinds of interesting places.

She has been a permanent resident of this state for the last 3.5 years, and prior to moving here from Greeley, Colo., she had visited us in Carson City a number of times. Those visits had been made by either train or bus and were always along the I-80 corridor from Wendover to Reno. That was all she had ever seen of the State of Nevada until this particular trip.

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Brian Roccucci of Big Daddy’s Guide Service (539) 283-4103 www.bigdaddyfishing.com reports:
The Brown Bite Continues! More Browns are beginning to move in to areas along the east shore following the Pond Smelt.
On recent trips we have seen pretty solid numbers of Browns, some days having to cover more water than on others, but the fish are there.

Snow for Show: Heavenly's 'Winter of all Winters'

The latest storm to hit South Lake Tahoe helped boost Heavenly Mountain Resort's year-to-date snow totals well past the 400-inch mark, or more than 30 feet, roughly enough snow to cover the famous Babe the Blue Ox statue in Klamath, Calif.

This is the third-best snow season in Heavenly’s history and forecasters are predicting as much as six more feet before this round of storms clears.

The week of Feb. 21, Sal and Catali Quilici of Dayton, together with Elaine, her mom (Mary) and I traveled by two vehicles from Carson City all the way south to La Quinta, California (about 500 miles).

It was a stark contrast between two totally different worlds. In Carson City, we had been experiencing winter weather conditions, seemingly forever, which is typical for this time of the year: furnace running off and on, all day and all night; heavy frost on the car windows in the mornings, ominous-looking gray clouds filling the skies; cold, biting winds; snow-covered landscapes; trees without leaves; dead-looking flower gardens; having to wear winter jackets and gloves; all kinds of neighbors and friends with sniffles, coughs and colds.

Summer's here and the time is right...

It looks like summer is here in force. Carson City (as reported by CarsonWeather.com) topped out at 98.3 today, while the National Weather Service in Reno hit the century mark- 100 degrees at 5pm.
Look for more of the same through the weekend - HOT. After some clouds and a slight chance of rain on Friday, we should continue our summer pattern of 60's in the morning and 90's in the afternoon.

'Splice' at the Galaxy a muddled Frankenstein update

“Splice,” a 2009 movie that won some independent film awards, is playing at the Carson City Fandango Galaxy for the next couple of weeks, depending on how many people plunk down several dollars to see the film. It’s a sc-fi fantasy outing, with the plot lifted more or less from the Dr. Frankenstein concept of Mary Shelly.
