JoAnne Skelly column: Hydrangeas in Northern Nevada

Last week I visited with the Desert Gardeners Club in Carson City. I asked the gardeners to give me some ideas for articles. Donna wanted to know how to grow hydrangeas in our area. Hydrangeas are beautiful plants with large deep green leaves, which sometimes provide red fall color. They have spectacular flowers that can be long lasting, even holding their beauty when dried. Some flowers are large balls. Others look like halos of lovely blooms. Some are the size of dinner plates.

Column: Avoid family conflicts over inheritances

No matter how well you and your family get along, you can help reduce or avoid family conflicts over inheritances by taking action now. "Do it now" concept.

Early and good communication can help avoid misunderstandings, surprises and conflicts over inheritances. It may be best to start talking about your goals and plans with your family members (including in laws in some cases).

Business Spotlight: The Naked Spice offers taste of diversity

Besides quality food, what can often set a restaurant apart from others is its uniqueness. At The Naked Spice in north Carson City, diners get both.

In a shared space with La Posada Real at 3205 Retail Drive in the Wal-Mart Shopping Center off College Parkway, the two restaurants make a pairing that is as unexpected as it is unique.

Carson City Sheriff's Office: Use designated driver to usher in safe, healthy 2016

New Year’s is upon us and with it comes a time of resolution. Many of our resolutions deal with personal desires to improve upon ourselves. How about a resolution that benefits everyone you will come into contact with New Year’s Eve and the rest of 2016?

The Godfather: It’s About Family and More

Why is The Godfather so popular among conservative men?

A Mafia film with some famously violent scenes and dealing with the problems of a family of criminals? A story that ends with the underworld boss fully in control after dispatching his enemies with extreme prejudice?

True, the earnest opening lines are: “I love America. America has made my fortune.” An awesome beginning, but that’s not the reason.

Much of the reason lies with the backstory we heard about how Francis Ford Coppola came to produce and direct the film and co-author its script with Mario Puzo, who wrote the book.

Column: Another look at charitable gift annuities

Suppose you own shares of a publicly traded stock or an investment in a mutual fund. If your original cost was $10,000 and the current value after holding it many years is $50,000, if you sell it there will be a $40,000 gain.

Have a safe, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the Carson City Sheriff's Office

Over the past months I have addressed many subjects related to traffic safety. These articles were written to educate and inform you, the motoring public, on a variety of issues from drinking and driving to pedestrian safety and other situations that arose during the year.

Now, as you travel to your holiday destinations to spend time with loved ones and friends, I ask that you take some time to consider what I have written about. Arriving safely should be your number one priority.

Carson High School sports medicine program provides more than just education

Caroline Gabica slid activated hand warmers into her boots, picked up a bag of footballs and followed the coach out onto the field during the playoff game between Carson and Reed high schools in November. Soon Gabica, manager for the Carson High School Senators football team, was back on the sidelines, taping up the injured fingers of a player who got tangled up with another player’s face mask.

JoAnne Skelly: Sure it’s October but you can go ahead and plant ahead anyway

People look at me funny when I say “Plant now” in October. This is the best time of year to plant trees, shrubs and even perennials. While this goes against common sense with winter’s low temperatures coming, trust me, plant anyway.

Opinion: How many more?

A lot of people are asking themselves and the society in which we live this question hours after a fatal mass killing at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon.

I’m a native Oregonian, born and raised just an hour or two north of Roseburg. My parents called this mill city, situated between the North and South branches of the Umpqua River, home for a few years a decade back. I know the area fairly well. One of my favorite places to visit was Wildlife Safari just a few miles down the road in Winston.
