Open House at the Historic Wungnema House

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation will host an open house and exhibit of selected works of Native American art at the historic Wungnema House located in Mills Park, from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 28.

Today has all the makings of a great day. Have lunch with the Chamber of Commerce and speaker Caren Roblin will teach you about the good, bad, and ugly sides of social media. Meet artists Gail Rappa and Elaine Parks at the Nevada Arts Council this evening. A reception in honor of their shared exhibit begins at 5 p.m. Ladies are invited to join the weekly Muscle Powered bike ride in Ash Canyon, just don’t forget your helmet and some sunscreen. Let the students of Carson High Musical Theater entertain you during their last concert of the year; general admission is only $4.00.

We’ve reached the mid-point of May, which puts summer just around the corner. I suspect there are plenty of students, and teachers too, that are counting down the days. The Carson High HOSA team is headed to their National Conference soon, and lunch or dinner at Chili’s will help get them there, just mention fundraiser to the server. We also have a T-Shirt fundraiser today at Firehouse Subs and Battle Born Ammunition & Firearms, LLC. The fundraiser is for Makayla Warner who is battling a rare kidney disease.

Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away. On my way to where the air is sweet. I can tell you where to find some fun, down on Carson Street. Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee is the hot ticket tonight. Such a beautiful day in store, they’ll probably be in the courtyard. Our rivers and reservoirs are filled to the brim: if you ever wanted to learn more about fly-fishing, this is probably a good time for it. The Carson City Fly Fishing Club meets monthly at the Carson City Airport and is a perfect choice for those who already love or are curious about the sport.

Carson City Chamber leadership mural to be unveiled at FISH

Patrons of the dining room at Friends in Service Helping will soon have a brighter and more cheerful wall to look at. For its final project, the Carson City Chamber of Commerce’s 2017 Leadership Class is painting a mural in the dining room, which serves meals to homeless people and others in need.

The morning easy walk will take you from Mills Park to the Capitol and the afternoon conditioning hike will give you well-deserved views from C-Hill. Now that we’ve warmed up some, the Tuesday evening ladies’ ride in Ash Canyon has started up again: don’t forget your helmet. Congratulations to Mile High Jazz Band for 16 years of monthly concerts at Comma Coffee. Enjoy a night of great music, yummy drinks, and a birthday cake to celebrate.

Moose Lodge to Host 39th annual Easter Egg Hunt succeeding Kiwanis of Carson City

Nine years ago, the Kiwanis Club of Carson City, established in 1959, were approached by the Jaycee’s of Carson City. For 30 years they had sponsored and provided the annual Easter Egg Hunt, primarily at Governor’s Field on Easter Sunday.

It seems like overnight the crabapples have exploded into bloom. Take advantage of a beautiful day by joining one of the walks organized every Tuesday. An easy walk with Parks and Rec will take you along a portion of the Mexican Ditch Trail today. The Muscle Powered walk in early evening is more strenuous. Fathers will want to get moving if they plan on taking their daughter to the Carson High Father Daughter Dance this Friday. Swing by the High School office between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. for tickets or shoot an email to teacher Angila Golek to make sure they’re waiting at will call.

I hope everyone enjoyed the sunshine while it was here, more rain is on the way. Take those spring-breakers to a movie; Galaxy Theater rewards members can enjoy $6.50 movies all day today. Sip something yummy at the Courtyard by Marriott during their wine tasting and open house. Normally the Carson City Photo Club meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month, but due to a scheduling conflict, the meeting is tonight. Dues are only $15 a year and you’ll get the chance to enter their monthly competitions: this month the theme is ‘Winter.’

Breaking News: All Carson City schools canceled due to flooding

With flooding reported at some of the school campuses and around town, the Carson City School District announced just before 8 a.m. that all schools now CLOSED Friday due to heavy flooding.

Late last night the district had announced that schools were on a two-hour delay. However due to the nature of flooding overnight, the district decided to close all campuses. See the photos and video by Jeff Moser below.

It’s going to be a great Tuesday, Carson City. Parks and Recreation sponsors their weekly ‘Easy Walk’ along Kings Canyon Trail. Although, if the rain continues to fall, the walk will take place at our new Multi-Purpose Athletic Center. Capital City Art Initiative celebrates the artists of Western Nevada College this evening, and then welcomes Phyllis Shafer for an illustrated discussion of her work. The Carson City Classic Cinema Club shows off a young Elizabeth Taylor tonight in the 1954 romantic drama ‘The Last Time I Saw Paris.’

Carson City Parks and Rec foundation donates $6,210 for rifle range restroom installation

The Foundation for Carson City Parks and Recreation is financially partnering with the Carson City Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Department to install a vault toilet at the Carson City Rifle and Pistol Range.

The Foundation recently donated $6,210 towards this needed project which will be used as a cash match for a Nevada Department of Wildlife Hunter Education/Shooting Range Program Grant.

It’s not exactly warm outside, but compared to some of the bitter cold we’ve had this month, it’s not that bad. Take advantage of the dry weather by joining in on the Parks and Recreation Easy Walk in John Mankins Park in Silver Oak. It’s a Jazz Extravaganza at the Community Center tonight. Mile High Jazz Band has teamed up with the Carson High and Carson Middle School jazz bands for their annual concert. The monthly fundraiser at Firehouse Subs makes raising money for Relay for Life as easy as ordering dinner.
