Carson City, Douglas County offer curbside Christmas tree recycling

Carson City and Douglas County are again participating in a statewide Christmas tree recycling effort. As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day or taken to one of several drop off locations.

Second in 2 days: Carson City Fire Department called to brush fire near landfill

UPDATE 10:51AM: Smoldering material from Friday's fire at the landfill caused it to reignite and burn around a 20 foot by 20 foot swath before being knocked down, according to Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon. The cause of Friday's fire remains under investigation. The area is being monitored by public works.

Carson City Fire Department responded early Sunday morning to the area of the Carson City landfill off of Flint Road near the rifle range for a brush fire.

As of 6:52 p.m. units from the Sheriff’s Office were called to handle traffic in the area of Flint and Rifle Range road. The entry gates have been barred from civilian entry while the fire is contained.

Around 6:30 p.m. Friday evening, firefighters were called to a reported brushfire near the landfill.

Black smoke could be seen rising from the area, as captured in a photograph taken by reader Tim Foraker.

Man arrested after shots fired at landfill; group thought they were at shooting range

A 49-year-old Reno man was arrested Thursday afternoon on the charges of obstructing an officer after deputies responded to a report of shots being fired at the Carson City Landfill.

UPDATE: 10:05PM: Firefighters appear to have gotten the upper hand on the flare-up at the Carson City dump Sunday night. At least one engine was released from the landfill and returned to quarters. Two engines from Station 52 remain committed at the scene and a water tender was en route.

UPDATE: 8AM: The fire at the Carson City landfill in East Carson City is out but is still smoldering and putting up some residual smoke, according to fire officials. Those passing by may see some smoke. Firefighters are continuing to mop up the fire and are monitoring it as of Sunday morning. No homes or structures were threatened. The cause remains under investigation.

A fire has been reported at the Carson City Landfill and emergency crews are on scene, where flames are reported visible inside the landfill, an area of about 200 feet by 200 feet in size.

UPDATE 4:42PM: The landfill fire has been fully contained, according to the Carson City Fire Department. The cause of the fire is still undetermined. The landfill will reopen Wednesday.

UPDATE 3:12PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon reports the fire at the Carson City landfill Tuesday afternoon continues to put out a lot of smoke but is no longer spreading. The fire is burning dump-related material, he said and there's not a threat to the public. Some engines have already been released from the scene.

UPDATE: Carson City Fire Department and sheriff's deputies were called Tuesday afternoon to the area of the landfill off of Flint Road for a large fire initially reported to be a brush fire.

The call came into dispatch at around 2 p.m., reporting a heavy amount of black smoke coming from a construction area near the landfill.

UPDATE 2:45PM: An update to the fire at the rifle range Tuesday afternoon. Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon reports progress made on the fire and is now moving into mop-up phase. There are three hand crews, two engines, 1 rescue ambulance and overhead staff on scene. The fire is between 4 to 5 acres. Helicopter air support was not needed.
The cause is unknown at this time and is under investigation. The rifle range remains closed for the day.

UPDATE 2:18PM: Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon said there was a flareup this afternoon that takes the fire out of mop-up phase. A hand crew from the Nevada Division of Forestry has been called to the scene. There has been some talk of air support from firefighting helicopters.
