Carson City Historical Society's Garden Tour features amazing treasure of local landscaping

The Carson City Historical Society's 2015 annual garden tour took place Saturday where guests were able to walk or drive through Carson City and view magnificent homes and gardens. It was clear along the tour that those participating put an extraordinary amount of time and creative effort into their gardens and homes.

The Experimental Aircraft Association is hosting the Ford Tri-Motor this weekend, and has Young Eagles flights for the kids: registration and orientation is at 8 a.m. Head over to Eagle Valley Golf for free family golf day.

Carson City Historical Society's 2015 annual Garden Tour is Saturday

The Carson City Historical Society's 2015 Garden Tour is Saturday, June 13. This walking and driving tour includes some very special Carson City homes and gardens.

The self-guided tour begins at 11 a.m. and will run until 4 p.m. More than a dozen carefully selected homes and gardens, some new to the tour, some old favorites, will be available for public viewing for this special event. We are pleased to announce that the Krebs-Petersen House will be opened for your admiration. This was the location of John Wayne's last movie, "The Shootist."

Friends, relatives and neighbors: Today is your last chance to catch the Youth Theatre Carson City ensemble in the spectacular performance of 'Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat' at the Bob Boldrick Theater in the Community Center. Historical Society Tea

Carson City Parks and Recreation Awards Ceremony October 21

The Foundation for the Betterment of Carson City Parks and Recreation will present Special Recognition Awards for year 2014 recipients in a brief ceremony on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 4:30 p.m. at the monument at the entrance to the Marv Teixeira Pavilion (formerly Pony Express Pavilion) in Mills Park. The public is invited to attend this free, outdoor event.

Beatles Flashback tribute band on stage tonight at Carson City Community Center

Beatles Flashback, a Beatles tribute band formed in 2006, will be on stage tonight, Wednesday, at the Carson City Community Center as part of the Jazz & Beyond Carson City Music Festival.

While most people are familiar with Beatles tribute bands that dress up to look like the Fab Four, Beatles Flashback, a group that formed in Sonoma County, Calif., and is now based in Reno, focuses instead on recreating the music that is heard on the original recordings.

The Jazz and Beyond: Carson City Music Festival presents Boogie Woogie Hall of Famer Carl Sonny Leyland in concert on Thursday, Aug. 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King St., Carson City.

"Jazz & Beyond" is a yearly festival put on by the Mile High Jazz Band Association and its sponsors. Admission to this concert is free. Donations are requested and include a chance at a door prize.

History of The Beatles Lecture and Beatles Flashback Concert

This year, the United States celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' first visit to these shores. The "Jazz & Beyond: Carson City Music Festival" is excited to provide two exciting Beatles events in honor of that occasion.

Mad Hatter Garden Party with Corky Bennett Trio Aug. 1 at the Nevada Governor's Mansion

The 2014 Jazz and Beyond - Carson City Music Festival will open Friday, August 1 with a "Mad Hatter Garden Party" featuring music by the Corky Bennett Trio in the backyard of the Nevada Governor's Mansion.

The ticketed party features music, finger foods by Carson City Confections, wine, beer, and a raffle. Festivities run from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

Nevada State Prison history lecture set for August 15

CARSON CITY — A bloody palm print, footprints of monster men, the nation's first legal lethal gas chamber — all of this and more are at the heart of the Nevada State Prison story.

Find out about these nuggets of history by attending a free lecture entitled "Nevada State Prison: A History" on Thursday, August 15, at 6 p.m. Jennifer E. Riddle, Sena M. Loyd, and Stacy L. Branham, co-authors along with Curt Thomas of the recently published book, "Nevada State Prison," will be making the presentation.

History of Rock n' Roll presentation Aug. 6 at Brewery Arts Center

Musician and educator John Shipley will present a lecture and demonstration with slides and audio samples on the history of rock n' roll, concluding with questions and comments from the audience and the raffle of an electric guitar. The talk will be on Tuesday, August 6, 7-8:30 p.m., at Brewery Arts Center Ballroom, 449 W. King Street, Carson City. Admission is free.

With tradition, community spirit and the launch of the Carson City jazz festival in mind, residents are welcome to a cool summer evening with music and sweet treats as the Carson City Historical Society hosts its annual Ice Cream Social this Saturday.

Festivities begin at 5 p.m. and feature live music, mountain men and quilters. The event takes place at Foreman-Roberts House Park, 1207 North Carson Street. The event is free to get in and costs $3 to enjoy the ice cream and cookies.

The Carson City Historical Society presents a free "walking lecture" on the "History of Trees in Carson City" on Thurday, July 18.

The presentation begins at the Carson City Library Auditorium, 900 N. Roop St., at 6:00 p.m. with a 20-30 minute slide show presentation about trees of our area by Kyle Horvath. Then, participants will drive over to the Capitol Ground for the rest of the lecture.
