SILVER CITY, Nev. — Carson City’s recognition of the importance of arts and culture to a thriving community is very much in line with that of nearby Silver City. The Comstock town is known as an "Arts and Cultural Resources Production Center" due to the work residents have contributed in the fields of arts and cultural resources.

Obituary: Betty Block (Rowe)

On January 30, 2018 Betty Block (Rowe) a long-term resident of Carson City left us at the age of 87. Born in Bronxville, NY on September 18, 1930, Betty was raised in Scarsdale, NY, spending all of her childhood summers in Orient Point, NY. Betty attended Scarsdale High and graduated from Dana Hall preparatory school. She attained a B.A. Degree in Mathematics at Vassar College. It was there that she was better known by her classmates as “Betty Boop.”

Go check out the Bristlecone Art Gallery where you’ll find a plethora of True-Grit inspired artwork: it’s pretty spectacular what these artists have done with a simple deck of playing cards. It may be a little too wet for this evening’s Muscle Powered hike, but you’ll find other opportunities to burn off a little steam. The Senior Center recently hosted ‘Carson’s Got Talent,’ so they know the caliber of performers hidden in our midst. Auditions for their annual show, Senior Follies, continue this evening and are open to all ages. CCAI’s art exhibit in the Community Development Building on E. Proctor features work from several high school artists. Join them in celebrating this young talent at a reception tonight. The day should be gorgeous; a hike with Muscle Powered is the perfect way to embrace the spring.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "High School Pic(ks) 2018" at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City.

Thirty-two artists from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. CCAI will host a reception for the artists on Tuesday, April 24, 5 – 7pm. The free exhibition is available to the public from April 15 – July 9, 2018, Mondays - Fridays, 8am – noon and 1-4pm.

Muscle Powered, our local hiking, biking, and trail-building group, leads guided hikes and walks a few times every week, including two on Tuesdays. Don’t let spring break be an excuse not to use your noggin. Geeks Who Drink Pub Quiz at Sassafras and DJ Trivia at Fox Brewpub are both open to all ages and free to play. You’ve only got a few days to see the Winter Art Show in the Nevada Artist Association Gallery; their new show, ‘Spring has Sprung,’ will open Sunday.

Artists readying for statewide art show in Carson City ahead of Nevada Day Parade

As a highlight for the upcoming statewide art show, Capital Collage, Mark Salinas commissioned Las Vegas papier mache artist Justin Favela to create three, alien-themed piñatas. However, the piñatas won’t just be on display, they will be broken in traditional custom during the art show.

I hope you’ve got your Halloween costume ready. A week of various Halloween activities, trick-or-treats, and festivities for the kids begins tomorrow with the first ever Boo-nanza: a family-friendly collaboration between the Community Center, Carson City Library, and Aquatic Center. Tonight, the over 21 crowd gets to enjoy a costume contest at Alatte inside the Carson Nugget, with many more parties on the way.

Nevada Day program cover released

Artists from across the state, representing an array of mediums, are featured on the cover of this year’s Nevada Day program.
“The cover is a shared authorship of several artists, which plays into the ideals of the Nevada Day parade and its theme,” said Mark Salinas, Carson City’s director of arts and culture.

It's National Register to Vote Day - Carson residents can go to the County Clerk's office in the Courthouse. While you're there, head to the CCAI Gallery on the second floor to catch the last few days of the 'Industrial Art: Sports Edition' exhibit.

Now in its fourth year of a major re-branding effort, the Carson City Culture and Tourism Authority (CCCTA) has begun making arts and culture a major thrust in its marketing campaign to visitors, Executive Director Joel Dunn said.
