Heading into Thursday, August 29, 2019 and we're ready and due for the upcoming three-day holiday weekend ahead. Looking around the Carson City area for Thursday there's art showings, a Muscle Powered hike, a Partnership Carson City training and lunch and then a vigil to recognize and prevent opioid overdose and more.

The public is invited to a candlelight vigil Thursday at Bob McFadden Plaza in honor of International Overdose Awareness Day.

“The opioid epidemic is so huge, even in a town of our size,” said Samantha Szoyka, the youth program and outreach coordinator for Partnership Carson City. “As a community, we are starting to talk about it, but people still don’t know what resources are available to them or how they can connect with those resources.”

The vigil, which begins at 7 p.m., will feature a guest speaker and booths distributing information.

On Monday morning, Sheriff Dan Coverely of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed residents’ worst fears: that the two homicides that occurred within four days and a mile apart were believed to be connected. Not only that, but they had no leads, no description of a suspect and no motive.

This first weekend of June packs quite a punch: activities and events abound. Head downtown for the first Third and Curry Farmers Market of the season, then wander a few blocks north for Due Sorella’s Spring Vintage Market. You may as well just keep the car parked. The Moving Wall, a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall in Washington D.C., has reached Douglas County where it is being presented for the first time in Minden beginning Thursday.

A crowd of more than 100 people gathered Saturday evening along North Carson Street in front of the Nevada State Capitol, holding a candlelight vigil for an estimated 3,000 Virginia Range wild horses currently under state of Nevada jurisdiction.

Local citizens will gather Saturday afternoon for a candlelight vigil calling on Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval to reverse the Nevada Department of Agriculture’s cancellation of the humane management cooperative agreements and current plan to sell the estimated 3,000 Virginia Range wild horses who fall under the state of Nevada’s jurisdiction to a private entity, according to a press release from local wild horse advocacy groups.

Please join us for our annual Worldwide Candlelight Vigil on Sunday, Dec. 10, 7 p.m. Time zones across the world will light their candles, creating a continuing wave of light to show our children that we will never forget them.

There will be a candlelight gathering on Sunday, 6:30 p.m. at Bob McFadden Plaza in Carson City for the seven high school students who were injured in a vehicle crash that happened Thursday night on Kings Canyon Road.

Although Veterans Day was observed yesterday, there are several things today that honor our former members of the military. Battle Born Harley Davidson is throwing an appreciation party complete with food trucks. Virginia City’s annual Veterans Day Parade begins at 11 a.m. and the City of Reno will commence their parade after a short ceremony beginning at 11:11 a.m. You’ll find an abundance of craft fairs in Carson City, Carson Valley, and Dayton. In the past two years, 654 people lost their lives in traffic crashes on Nevada’s roadways. This number not only represents a tragedy in terms of the loss of life, but also in terms of the lasting effect a traffic crash can have on those who are left to grieve.

Friday night brought more than 200 people to the Nevada State Capitol Building in Carson City for a candlelight vigil to honor and recognize victims of the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

There will be a candlelight vigil for Mandalay Bay shooting victims this Friday, Oct. 6, 8 p.m. in front of Nevada State Capitol Building, 101 North Carson Street, Carson City.

It’s hard to see straight when the weekend approaches. The Downtown Business Association hosts their monthly wine walk on Saturday, but that is just the tip of the fun-time iceberg. Due Sorella, also known as Two Sisters, welcomes their annual Autumn Vintage Faire to the large parking lot behind them and the Airstreams on Main event brings shiny trailer nostalgia with them. Join the Annual Candlelight Vigil for Domestic Violence Awareness at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center this evening – just remember to bring a jacket, it’s getting chilly once the sun goes down.

RENO, Nev. — Carson City Sheriff’s Office Deputy Carl Howell was remembered for his heroism and being a “true warrior” by those who knew him best as they shared their memories among thousands of mourners who gathered for a funeral service Thursday at Reno Events Center.

Howell, 35, died Saturday, August 15, 2015 in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call at an East Carson City home. He was married to wife Rachel and is a father of four children. He was a nine year veteran of the Carson City Sheriff's Office having started serving in March 2006.

The mood has been somber in Carson City this week. The news of Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell’s shooting death has rallied the community, beginning with a large candlelight vigil held last Saturday at the Capitol. Today the officer will be laid to rest after a funeral service at the Reno Convention Center. A procession will leave the Carson City Courthouse at 9 a.m. and travel north along Carson Street. Thousands gathered with candles and prayers at the Nevada law enforcement memorial at the State Legislative complex Saturday to mourn the loss of Carson City Sheriff's Deputy Carl Howell who was shot and killed in the line of duty responding to a domestic violence call.

The capital city community has extended an outpouring of support for a Carson City Sheriff's Office deputy who was shot and killed early Saturday morning responding to a domestic violence call at an east Carson City home.

With officers, administrators and volunteer in police service personnel streaming out of the sheriff's administrative office during a series of briefings Saturday morning and afternoon, they've been met randomly by Carson City and surrounding area community members, bringing flowers, cards, bracelets, statuettes, along with words of respect, sorrow and to offer condolences.

UPDATED: A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was killed in a shooting early Saturday morning during an exchange of gunfire on the northeast side of Carson City. The suspect also died, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. A Carson City Sheriff's deputy was critically injured during an exchange of gunfire on Mondtez Drive on the northeast side of Carson City Saturday morning at around 3 a.m.

The area has been cordoned off and the Carson City Sheriff crime lab unit, Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County Sheriff deputies are on the scene. More details to follow.

Sierra-at-Tahoe will hold a candlelight vigil Wednesday for Michael Hallenbeck of Shingle Springs, Calif. The 21-year old U.S. Forest Service firefighter died Saturday fighting a lightning-caused fire south of Echo Summit.

Known by friends and family as Mikey, Hallenbeck was a Sierra-at-Tahoe employee for the past two seasons and a local firefighter.

When Dejon Smith left home after school on Dec. 11, like any teen facing a snow day the following day, he told his parents he was headed out for the evening. He did not tell them where he was going or with whom he would be.

DeShawn and Taneka Smith, Dejon's parents, were concerned when, at the end of the evening, they hadn't heard from their son.

The shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut has claimed the lives of 26 people, 20 of them children. This is a tragedy that has gained national attention and has wrenched the hearts of Carson City residents. Saturday night, December 15, as the sun sets at 6:00 p.m., members of the Carson City business community will be hosting a candlelight vigil on the sidewalk of the Nevada State Capitol building, located at 101 North Carson Street.

Rumors that the Carson City school calendar and the daily start time for classes are changing is false, according to Superintendent Richard Stokes. While there are studies showing that teens perform better when they don't have to wake up early, Stokes said the district is not ready to change their start times without seeking input from all parties. He also said the school calendar will likely be similar to this year, with classes starting the third week of August.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church will be participating in the Compassionate Friends nationwide candlelight vigil on Sunday honoring children "gone too soon." Participants plan to gather at 6:30 p.m. at the church at the corner of Saliman and Highway 50, with the vigil beginning at 7 p.m.
