Lyon County is announcing opportunities for Lyon County residents to get involved in the decision making processes in their local community by becoming a member of one of our Citizen Advisory Boards or a member of the Planning Commission.

RENO — At a special Nevada System of Higher Education meeting held Thursday, the Board of Regents announced the appointment of former Gov. Brian Sandoval as the University of Nevada, Reno’s next president. He becomes the first Hispanic and 17th president of the 146-year-old University.

Gov. Sandoval, who is currently a Distinguished Fellow of Law and Leadership at UNLV’s William S. Boyd School of Law among other endeavors, will begin Oct. 5, 2020 and serve a 4-year contract.

Local elections — where politics matters the most of all. While the race for president, and maybe certain races in the Senate and House, dominate the news, the fact is that all politics is local and that your local government is the one that affects your life the most. It’s local government that arranges for your basic services, such as water and sewer, trash, and all the utilities.

With many public lands and recreation areas open across Nevada, public officials are reminding residents and visitors to recreate responsibly by continuing to take all precautions to stop the spread of COVID-19.

This Labor Day weekend, it is critical that everyone practice responsible recreation. Protect yourself, others, and Nevada’s invaluable public lands and waters.

After an almost two-year battle with pancreatic cancer, Sparks Mayor Ron Smith has died. He was 71 years old.

Mayor Smith was officially sworn in as the 25th Mayor of Sparks on November 13, 2018. He was elected to the Sparks City Council in November 2006 and was re-elected to four-year terms in 2008, 2012 and 2016. He served as Sparks Mayor Pro Tempore from 2012-2018.

In the pleasantly warm evening air under the trees this past Wednesday, Maurice White, candidate for Carson City supervisor for Ward 2, held a meet and greet at Glen Eagles Restaurant on North Carson Street, and talked to an attentive and respectful audience of about 35-40 people.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors will meet Thursday, Jan. 2 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street. On the agenda is a discussion about funding allocations and a contract to upgrade the Rifle Range, plus board member commission appointments and more.

With approximately 2,485 miles of national trails throughout the Silver State, the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is excited to “wear our hearts on our backpacks” as we join the country in celebrating five decades of the National Trails System.

The Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources is helping educate Nevada residents about the unique importance of groundwater in Nevada during National Groundwater Awareness Week, March 11-March 17, 2018.

The Chair of the Nevada Commission for Women was recently selected to serve on the 14-member Board of Directors for the National Association of Commissions for Women. NACW is the only national professional association connecting board and staff of Commissions for Women across the country.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors have several open seats available for a number of commissions, boards and committees.

In December 2017 the Lyon County Board of Commissioners will be appointing citizens to various Citizen Advisory Boards. Citizen Advisory Boards are established by the Lyon County Commission to represent residents of Lyon County in designated geographical areas.

CARSON CITY — Governor Brian Sandoval announced Wednesday the hiring of Kathryn Reynolds as General Counsel, which has been effective as of August 28, 2017.

Reynolds will fill the vacancy created with the departure of Daniel Stewart in early August. She will serve as Counsel to the Governor and act as a primary liaison between the Governor’s office and several cabinet agencies, boards and commissions.

My name is Alexander Kirsch and I am a 30-plus year resident of Carson City and homeowner in the City’s Historic District. My neighbors and I, with support from a number of property owners in the Historic District, are fighting to protect and preserve the integrity of Carson City’s Historic District.

UPDATE: A funeral service for Janice R. Ayres, a longtime Carson City resident and champion for the elderly and disabled in Nevada, will be held today, Friday, in Carson City at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Musser and Division streets.

A gathering for family and friends of Ayres will follow at Cafe at Adele's, 1112 North Carson Street.

Ayres was 92 when she died May 27, 2013.

Janice R. Ayres, a tireless advocate for the elderly and the disabled, an unshakable Democrat and former member of the Carson City Board of Supervisors died Monday morning at Carson Tahoe Hospital after battling cancer. She was 92.

Ayres was the executive director of the Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program, a position she held since 1979. RSVP Board member Charlie Abowd confirmed her passing and said directors will meet Tuesday afternoon to discuss arrangements.

AB 312 which is now currently before the Senate Government Affairs Commission, and was submitted by Republican Assemblyman and former member of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, Pete Livermore, strikes at the very heart of our democracy.

CARSON CITY – A state agency announced today it plans to consolidate three separate boards that oversee workforce development into one, resulting in $5 million more in federal funds directed annually to helping train job seekers to find employment.

The plan, “Moving Nevada Forward: A Plan For Excellence in Workforce Development,” was released by the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR).
