UNR welcomes students to campus, residence halls for fall

More than 2,400 students will move into the University of Nevada, Reno’s residence halls starting Thursday in preparation for Monday’s first day of classes for the 2012 fall semester.

After more than a year in the making, the official opening of Bonanza Park in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday brought community members and families together in celebration of a cooperative public and private agreement made possible by city leaders and Edgewood Companies.
South Lake Tahoe Mayor Claire Fortier and Edgewood's CEO and president Chuck Scharer gladly cut the ribbon after months of negotiations allowing for future property and building rights in exchange for the public park.

The 27th Lake Tahoe Autumn Food and Wine Festival, long considered one of the region’s premier gourmet events, has increased the number of its programs – now offering nine days of festivities.

Outdoors with Don Q: The Fourth of July will be different this year

If you have not yet made any plans to be in the Great Outdoors for the upcoming Fourth of July, you might want to heed some or all of the following tips.
Because the Fourth of July falls in the middle of the week on Wednesday this year, it will put a crimp in many folks’ plans for celebrating in the outdoors, as many of them will only have Wednesday off as a holiday.
So, their celebrating will have to occur either on the preceding weekend or the weekend following the Fourth.

With that said, consider this for either weekend:

Carson City Taste of DownTown 2012 (photos)

More than 2,000 hungry locals and visitors filled downtown Carson City Saturday night for the 19th annual Taste of Downtown, a culinary event over 20 blocks that featured 43 restaurants, seven bands and plenty of community bonding.
From tangy barbecue ribs to fresh made pizza and lasagna, authentic tacos, sushi rolls and decadent desserts, there was more than enough food and good times to go around for this Carson City culinary fundraiser that benefits Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

Lake Tahoe Custom Cycles grand opening on Saturday at South Shore

Lake Tahoe Custom Cycles will celebrate its grand opening from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 16. Lake Tahoe Custom Cycles is located at 1150 Melba Drive, South Lake Tahoe. It services and repair motorcycles of all makes and models, specializing in Harley Davidsons. Saturday's festivities will include music, a barbecue and free giveaways.
After Saturday's grand opening the shop will be opened for regular hours Tuesday – Friday, 10 am – 4 pm; Saturday, 9 am – 2 pm and Sundays by appointment.

Lake Tahoe prepares itself for multiple fireworks celebrations

The Lake Tahoe region will celebrates Independence Day holiday with multiple fireworks displays from virtually all points, with the first show set to kick off July 3.

“North Lake Tahoe is unique in that we have a series of fireworks events held throughout the region,” said Chief Marketing Officer Andy Chapman of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber/CVB/Resort Association. “Visitors to the area can take their pick in terms of when and where or enjoy more than one show during their stay.”

Outdoors with Don Q: Annual Invitational Fishing Derby at Topaz Lake

Sunday through Tuesday, April 22-24, are the 2012 dates for the highly-popular John Riordan Invitational Fishing Derby. John is the Assistant General Manager for the Carson Station Hotel and Casino in Carson City, and this will be the 15th version of his annual, fun-filled, fishing event at Topaz Lake.
His derby is traditionally co-headquartered at the Topaz Lake Marina and the Topaz Lake Lodge at Topaz Lake, which lies along the Nevada-California state line about 40 miles south of Carson City.

Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous dates set

The first Lake Tahoe Motorcycle Adventure Ride and Rendezvous is slated for August 23-26 on the beautiful South Shore of Lake Tahoe (Tahoe South). The event includes both off road and pavement rides, evening social events, entertainment, guest speakers, vendors and Tahoe summer activities. The event welcomes all makes of bikes and riders.

High Sierra Flycasters 2012 Fundraiser

Outdoors with Don Q: Carson Valley Chukar Club fundraiser

Saturday evening, March 3, will be the date of my all-time favorite fundraiser: The highly-popular and fun-filled, Carson Valley Chukar Club fund raiser, which will be held as usual at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.
This year’s version will be its 26th fundraiser.

There's a new breakfast in town: Cafe at Adele's

Adele's is a Carson City landmark. This long-time restaurant — located in one of the oldest homes in town — attracts discriminating diners with its classical ambiance and reputation of its renown chef Charlie Abowd.

But now the restaurant is doing something new that will likely shake things up in Carson City early in the morning. They are serving breakfast.

Dickey's Barbecue Pit opens in Carson City on Tuesday

(press release) Dickey's Barbecue Pit franchise owner Farrokh Hormazdi will be opening his doors for business tomorrow, Tuesday January 31st. The first 100 people receive a free big barbecue pulled pork sandwich.

"I am extremely excited to open and begin serving authentic barbecue to our community," said Hormazdi.

The new 1,448 square foot store is located at 3250 Retail Drive, Suite 100. The hours of operation are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

OSA banquet ends its 2011 year on a high note

Kinder Kup Ski Race Series Final Event This Sunday

The Heavenly Ski and Snowboard Foundation will host the Kinder Kup Race Series finals at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain Resort on Sunday, March 20, 2011 from 8a m to 2 pm.

Open to all skiers and snowboarders age six and under (as of Dec. 31, 2010), the Kinder Kup series at Lake Tahoe is designed to introduce young athletes to competition in a friendly environment. No previous race experience necessary. Entry is $20 and includes a World Cup only competitor lift ticket.
