Nevada Guardsman among the victims of the Las Vegas country concert shootings

A Nevada Army National Guard sergeant first class was among the fatalities at the Route 91 Harvest concert late Sunday evening, Oct. 1, 2017. Sgt. 1st Class Charleston Hartfield, 34, a Soldier in the 100th Quartermaster Company headquartered in Las Vegas, was attending the concert when he was shot and killed.

Today, for example, you’ll find a fundraiser for Catmandu, the monthly meeting of the fly fishing club, some country line dancing, jazz and poetry, and a walk along the historic Blue Line Trail. No two Tuesdays are alike (or Wednesdays or Thursdays, for that matter), so it’s always worth checking out. Now that we are moving into autumn, the activities in Carson City change like the leaves.

Around two dozen runners and walkers remembered the victims of a mass shooting in Carson City that happened six years ago Wednesday in which five people died, including three Nevada National Guardsmen.

Sunny days, sweeping the clouds away. On my way to where the air is sweet. I can tell you where to find some fun, down on Carson Street. Mile High Jazz Band at Comma Coffee is the hot ticket tonight. Such a beautiful day in store, they’ll probably be in the courtyard. Our rivers and reservoirs are filled to the brim: if you ever wanted to learn more about fly-fishing, this is probably a good time for it. The Carson City Fly Fishing Club meets monthly at the Carson City Airport and is a perfect choice for those who already love or are curious about the sport.

The morning easy walk will take you from Mills Park to the Capitol and the afternoon conditioning hike will give you well-deserved views from C-Hill. Now that we’ve warmed up some, the Tuesday evening ladies’ ride in Ash Canyon has started up again: don’t forget your helmet. After a brief pause in the rain yesterday, the storm has returned. I write this list with trepidation, as localized flooding is still affecting homes and businesses around town. Everything on this list is subject to cancellation. It’s back to school for the kids of Lyon County and Carson. Jacks Valley Elementary is closed, but all other Minden/Gardnerville students are headed back. Stay safe out there, and thank you to all the city and state staff, volunteers, and good neighbors that are working hard to keep the damage to a minimum.

Five years later: Kuwait run honors Nevada Guard fallen

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - More than 200 soldiers participated today in a memorial run here to honor three Nevada guardsmen and one civilian killed five years ago in the Carson City IHOP shooting.

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, were killed in the shooting.

Law enforcement, governor among those in run to pay tribute to victims of 2011 IHOP shooting

Runners and walkers gathered at IHOP in Carson City early Tuesday morning to commemorate the victims of the IHOP mass shooting that happened five years ago today in Carson City.

On Sept. 6, 2011, Nevada Guardsmen Lt. Col. Heath Kelly, 35, Master Sgt. Christian Riege, 38, Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, 31, and civilian Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67, of South Lake Tahoe, were killed in the shooting rampage, in which a mentally ill gunman took his own life. Two other soldiers and seven patrons were injured.

Nevada State Railroad Museum names Dan Thielen museum director

Dan Thielen has been named museum director of the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City, officials announced Wednesday. Thielen was curator of education at the museum for many years before he left to serve full time as an officer in the Nevada Army National Guard.

With her son graduating from high school, Sue Jones began to rethink her own career as a math teacher at Carson High School. More and more, she was drawn back to retail, where she had gotten her start at the Ace Hardware her father owned in Incline Village.

Then it came to her — in a dream — the store that would help people connect with one another through meaningful gifts.

“I really just woke up with this idea of having a very heartfelt store,” she said.

Carson City Vet Council discusses changes at meeting

Members of the Carson City Veterans Community Council (CCVCC) met Wednesday afternoon to discuss changes within existing member organizations, as well as to welcome new members onto the council.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell and City Manager Nick Marano, both veterans, attended Wednesday's meeting and highlighted changes to the city's new, improved web site scheduled to go public by the end of May.

Column: Vietnam Veterans are loved

I was honored to attend and cover Saturday's Vietnam War Remembrance and Welcome Home ceremony near the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.

While there, a television image suddenly came to mind of a Vietnam War veteran sitting alone at the counter of a cafe while a young boy and his mother paid attention to a uniformed service man who had just come in.

The scene was from a television spot paid for by moments.org, a production of the INSP network, entitled "Thank You For Your Service (A Moment of Truth)."

Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Wayne Wheeler was recently honored by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval for his 27 years in the military with a day proclaimed in his honor.
