The beasts of Africa will be highlighted during a wildlife photography presentation to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on Wednesday, May 15. Presented by Patrick Pevey and Carol Grenier for the first time, club members will share in the experiences of seven trips to Africa.

CARSON CITY — Sixth graders in Mrs. Laurel Dority’s science class at Carson Middle School had the opportunity to chat via video conference with Dr. TJ Fudge, who’s preparing to leave for another 6-week expedition where he’ll continue his efforts to study climate change using ice core samples.

RENO — In addition to navigating pristine wild rivers and dirt roads, big-fish wrangler Zeb Hogan of Nat Geo WILD’s “Monster Fish” show also had to navigate a maze of dangerous military zones in order to tell the story of his travel and research in the remote and wild Salween River that runs through China, Thailand and Myanmar.

CARSON CITY, Nevada – A reception and artist’s talk with mixed-media artist Andreana Donahue will be held Thursday, Jan. 11 at the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery in Carson City.

A new initiative by the University of Nevada, Reno to foster creative, interdisciplinary research aimed at answering critical questions related to water resource management and sustainability was approved by the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents.

This is my annual reminder that November 18 was a significant date in the lives of some 4,212 hardy Alaskans (as of the 2010 census). Those folks live in a unique location known as Barrow, Alaska, which is the northernmost community in the United States.

It is located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, about 320 miles north of the Arctic Circle, and roughly about 1,300 miles south of the North Pole. On November 18, the sun set below the horizon at Barrow and it will not peek back up over the horizon until January 23 (weather permitting).

For the first time ever, scientists have recorded temperatures continuously at the bottom of an Antarctic ice shelf where warmer sea water threatens to erode the massive ice which, if it collapses and glacial melting occurs, could cause a three-meter rise in ocean levels around the world.

“This is the first time we can see the changes in the melting of these enormous ice shelves daily and at millimeter accuracy,” Scott Tyler, professor of geosciences at the University of Nevada, Reno, said. “This is critical for detecting the changes that may be occurring due to climate change.”

The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will hold its bi-monthly meeting on Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at Gold Dust West Hotel and Casino, 2171 Hwy 50E, Carson City. The social hour is at 5:30 PM followed by a buffet dinner at 6:30 PM.

Chris Field, a 2007 Nobel Prize team winner and lead author of the study on the effects of global climate change will be the keynote speaker at Lake Tahoe South's Operation Sierra Storm Meteorologist Conference, Jan 10.

Field, was the Co-Chair for Working Group II of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which shared the 2007 Peace Prize with former Vice President Al Gore. He’s the director of the Department of Global Ecology, Carnegie Institution for Science at Stanford University and a 2009 Heinz Award recipient, recognizing extraordinary environmental achievement.

RENO, Nev. – Half-mile long thermometers have been dropped through the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica that will give the world relevant data on sea and ice temperatures for tracking climate change and its effect on the glacial ice surrounding the continent. The study based at the University of Nevada, Reno is funded by the National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs and other NSF grants.

First, it's not in Fuji Park at all. It's behind the Carson City Fairgrounds, on the other side of the river, back where everyone can see it from the highway but you'll need signs and arrows to tell you how to get there. This could have been so much better if it was over by the grassy area of the park itself, maybe even built so that Clear Creek flows through it.
