With a record mountain snowpack changing to a robust, above normal, significant fire potential, wildland firefighting agencies are gearing up for another fire season and the University of Nevada, Reno is ramping up its AlertTahoe HD/4K fire camera system, which overlooks and helps protect dozens of western mountain ranges and hundreds of square miles of Nevada’s Great Basin.

A Small Stream Flood Advisory for snowmelt has been issued by the National Weather Service for low lying ranch land in areas south of Carson City into Carson Valley in Douglas County, Southern Washoe County and Alpine County.

Join us to explore the Carson River Watershed on a two-day bus tour. The Carson Water Subconservancy District is offering a bus tour of the Carson River Watershed from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on June 6 and 7, 2017.

The Carson River Watershed "Get on the Bus" tour will cover a variety of watershed topics and locations from the headwaters in Alpine County, CA to the terminus at the Carson Sink near Fallon.

Sports historians often call the 1960 Winter Olympics held at Squaw Valley “the last great games.” In an intimate, unspoiled setting, the best winter athletes from around the globe converged on the previously unheralded ski resort for 11 days. Hello fellow anglers, we have one week to go to the California opening day of trout fishing season. On April 29, 2017 the lakes and steams in Inyo, Mono and Alpine counties will open for fishing. On a special note, the rivers leading into Lake Tahoe do not open until July 1, 2017.

Hello fellow anglers, last weekend Renee and I took an adventure through Alpine County. We started at Red Lake and ventured back through Hope Valley. We then took a turn up to Monitor Pass along the east Carson River.

The Lake Tahoe Relay crew is preparing for another awesome race which is only 4 months away, taking place on June 10, 2017. New this year, participants will kick off the 2017 event in fashion with the starting line at the Tahoe Beach Retreat.

March is National Women in History Month and the Douglas County Historical Society will be honoring five women for their significant historical contribution to the quality of life in Douglas County. DCHS has reached out to the community asking for nominees that fit this category yearly since 1999.

The history gathered is archived at the Carson Valley Museum & Cultural Center in the VanSickle Research Library and with the Women In History Project, Reno.

Current snow conditions have provided excellent winter recreation opportunities for snowmobile enthusiasts on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Bridgeport, Carson City, Mountain City-Ruby Mountains-Jarbidge, and Santa Rosa Ranger Districts. The Placer County Sheriff's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred around 3 a.m. Friday near North Lake Tahoe.

An investigation is underway after a Squaw Valley ski patroller died Tuesday morning at the resort during avalanche control duties.

Joe Zuiches, 42, of Olympic Valley and a member of the Squaw Valley professional ski patrol since 2012, was killed in a fatal incident at 8:35 a.m. during avalanche control activities on top of Gold Coast Ridge.

Hello fellow anglers, Wishing you a warm and a happy holiday fishing season. Although many areas in our local area have closed for the season, we still have plenty of options to keep on fishing. The lakes in the higher altitudes have started to freeze and ice fishing will be upon us soon. I ask anglers to resist the urge to venture out on lakes and ponds until we have at least eight inches of solid ice.

Hello fellow anglers, We only have a few days left to fish many of our local waters. On Tuesday, Nov. 15 the California fishing season will come to an end for the majority of the rivers and streams, as well as the lakes in Inyo and Mono counties.
