If Carson City really needs a new library, I have an excellent idea. Let’s just buy the Ormsby House. Not for sale? Make em’ an offer they can’t refuse. Think about it.

On the 1st floor: foyer, auditorium, and changing exhibit area, all adjacent to an outdoor plaza (current valet parking). Second floor will have main library desk, space for newspaper and periodical reading, and restaurant without outdoor seating. Floors 3, 4, and 5 would be the main library collection. Floors 6, 7, and 8: computer labs, meeting rooms, and BRIC.

Yesterday was my last official day in charge of Carson Now. Today I am heading off to Silicon Valley and the adventure of being a Knight Fellow at Stanford University.

I'm happy to report that I'm leaving Carson Now in good hands. Actually, two sets of hands, which will mean more news and better service for the people of Carson City.

CARSON CITY – State lawmakers have put a new tourism contract to promote Nevada on hold despite the concerns of one lawmaker that the move exceeds legislative authority.

Concerns have been raised by Sen. Steven Horsford, D-Las Vegas, about the intent to award the two-year, $3.2 million contract to an out-of-state firm.

CARSON CITY – The National Retail Federation has launched a nationwide 60-day campaign to raise awareness among lawmakers and the public on how what it calls a loophole exempting online sales from sales tax is hurting local communities and job creation.

If Nevada’s five-member Congressional delegation is any indication, the group has its work cut out for it, with three members opposed and two supportive of the idea to allow states to tax online sales.

In a milestone for the organization, Amy R. Berry was appointed to the new position of CEO of the Tahoe Fund on Wednesday. The official announcement is a major shift forward for the organization and its mission to raise private and public funding for environmental projects in Lake Tahoe.

Services for legendary radio commentator Travus T. Hipp will be held this Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Hipp died early Friday morning, May 18, at his Silver City home. He was 75, as old as the Golden Gate Bridge in his beloved San Francisco.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 26, in Silver City. Gathering, gnoshing and remembering will begin at the Silver City Community Center, 385 High Street, at 10:00 a.m. Food and refreshments will be provided. Those who wish may bring more.

CARSON CITY – Long-time Republican political consultant Sig Rogich said today the 2013 Nevada Legislature has to take a serious look at collective bargaining reforms so that situations like the impending layoff of hundreds of Clark County teachers can be avoided in the future.

CARSON CITY – A proposal by Assemblyman Pat Hickey, R-Reno, to move Nevada’s primary election back to September to shorten the campaign season didn’t get out of the starting gate in 2011.

The Assembly Legislative Operations and Elections Committee held one hearing on Assembly Bill 157, which had cosponsors from both major political parties. But it also saw serious opposition from state election officials and never came up for a vote.

Did you know that our relatively small community has 26 libraries which are not managed, operated or funded in an integrated way?

Each of the 22 private and public schools has its own library. Then there are four public libraries (Western Nevada College, city, State Library and Archives, State Law Library). Two of these libraries (State Library and Archives and the State Law Library) are woefully underutilized.

I want to take a break from the news to talk a little inside baseball about Carson Now and what's happening here.

On Monday I was notified that I had been selected for a John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford University for the 2012-13 school year. It's an amazing opportunity to further the work I have done with Carson Now, at the top school in the world for Internet innovation. Situated in Silicon Valley, it's where Google, Yahoo! and more than 5,000 other companies were born.

The Carson City Chamber of Commerce's Home and Garden Show will take place on April 28 at the Carson Mall. The show begins at 10 a.m. with ribbon cutting by Mayor Robert Crowell & Chamber Board of Directors.

Proscenium Players is holding open auditions for their May production at the Brewery Arts Center of “Twelve Angry Men” directed by Jeff Fast and produced by Jonni Moon.

Two of Lake Tahoe's most popular ski and snowboarding icons, Daron Rahlves and Jeremy Jones, have finished shooting public service ads this week for the nonprofit Tahoe Fund's Plate for Powder program (photos).

The Carson City Board of Supervisors yesterday approved new boundary maps for the city's four wards, with slight changes from the previous boundaries. One change involved moving residents living south of King Street and north of West Fifth Street between Carson and Thompson streets from Ward 4 to Ward 1. The board also gave final approval to allow advertising on bus shelters, and made changes to water applications to allow better distribution of water between Carson, Lyon and Douglas counties. It was also announced that two donations totaling $71,773 has been given to Animal Services for the construction and operation of a new animal shelter.

The Carson Senators win their season opener against South Tahoe 59-50 in the first round of the 35th annual Carson Lions/Capital City Classic boys basketball tournament.

There is supposed to be a story here about a man being tried in the beating death of a boy, but instead the story is about a local family finalizing the adoptions of three of their 21 children. The full story about that family is here.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors approved a plan to allow the Jump Around Carson bus service to place advertising on its bus shelters to earn extra revenue. The plan comes with some restrictions, such as limiting the size of ads and not allowing them in historic districts.

Occupy Carson City held an impromptu demonstration in front of the legislature, coinciding with nationwide protests.

A light agenda is in store for the Carson City Board of Supervisors at their next meeting on Nov. 17.

The board will hear first reading of an ordinance to allow billboards to be placed on existing and future transit shelters.

When I read last month that the Nevada Appeal planned to start charging readers to access their web content, a tune began playing in my head: "It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas..."

Since the first step of their paywall (as we in the industry refer to paid access systems) was erected on Wednesday, traffic for Carson Now shot up 50 percent. I expect that to grow even more when the first free trial period ends and they begin asking readers for their credit cards.

CARSON CITY – I checked with high hopes, but alas, my dreams of finding a pot of gold did not materialize. Maybe you will have better luck.
The state has $490 million sitting around that it wants to return to its rightful owners.
In an effort to get the money to the people, the Unclaimed Property Division, operated by the Nevada State Treasurer’s Office, is advertising in 17 newspapers across the state over the next few weeks.

The Nevada legislature just gave the finger to every law enforcement officer who daily puts his or her life on the line in the fight against illegal drugs. Officers like the Carson City deputies who discovered a boy being held in a makeshift home prison by his meth-addicted parents.

The same day that story broke, State Senator Sheila Leslie had to pull a bill that is designed to seriously interrupt the availability of essential ingredients for methamphetamine production, because it didn't have the support it needs to pass the Senate.

It's hardly a surprise.

CARSON CITY – It took less than a day before Sen. Elizabeth Halseth had the attention she was looking for.
Tim Crowley, a lobbyist for the mining industry, said he called her this morning to schedule a meeting after she asked in a Tuesday night blog post, “did mining just hit a brick wall?”

The Carson City Convention and Visitors Bureau was awarded $14,000 in grants last week from the Nevada Commission on Tourism for three different marketing efforts, providing support for the destination’s Divine Nine Golf Co-operative, its own website and video production and advertising materials for the Virginia & Truckee Railway.

CARSON CITY – Assemblyman-elect Pat Hickey, R-Reno, today has called for a return to “electioneering sanity� by moving Nevada’s primary election date back to September.
Hickey is requesting a bill draft to make the change from the much earlier June primary date used for the first time this election cycle.

Shop Carson City First: It's All Here!, an idea spearheaded by the Carson City Chamber of Commerce a few years ago, has taken on a new incarnation, this time using social media as a tool to spread the word about its members and the deals and services they offer.

As advertising budgets tighten, social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter have become a cost-effective means to spread the word to consumers about the latest deals and exclusive offerings in town.

The Carson City Board of Supervisors revoked the catering license of Com Productions LLC, after it was used to provide alcohol at a gang-related party in August.

Sheriff Kenny Furlong made a presentation detailing an Aug. 20 incident where his deputies shut down a party held at 1700 Forrest Way put on by Com Productions' owner Robert Schmitt.

Furlong said that one wall of the warehouse — which is also owned by Schmitt — was decorated with gang graffiti, and that a known gang member had been hired by the owner to guard the back entrance to the building for the party.
