Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Carson Valley’s 18th annual Eagles and AG Photo Contest will be underway and live music will keep the Silver State buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

Heading into Thursday, activities lined up include a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a Polka Dot Powerhouse Women's Group luncheon at Red's Old 395 Grill, art showings, live music with Dale Poune at Gather, a meeting of the Carson City GOP at Casino Fandango featuring speaker Bob Potts from the Governor's Office of Economic Development, and more.

Hitting the halfway mark of the shortened work week, Wednesday events around town include Northern Nevada Development Authority's The Business Edge monthly meeting, "State of the Counties" at Casino Fandango, a Capital City Arts Initiative reception for the "Photo Finished 2020" exhibition featuring the works of 9 Carson High School students, a Bee City USA Carson City meeting at the community center, a women's Seeking Safety workshop, and more.

Returning from the holiday weekend, activities Tuesday around the capital city include the weekly gathering of the Carson City Toastmasters at Max Casino, a fundraiser at Pizza Factory in Carson City for a lifelong local and coach who has been ill, art showings and more.

When I was a little kid I read a Donald Duck comic book and was fascinated when I saw Uncle Scrooge McDuck had a coin with his likeness on it. I thought, "I'd like to have a coin like that someday." Well, it only took 70 years, but it looks like it actually might happen.

Nevada Author, Sandie La Nae, and Nevada Historian, Arline La Ferry, will be selling their newest book "Nevada's Oldest Hotel Gold Hill Hotel" at the Gold Hill Hotel on Saturday Feb. 22, 2020. From 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., books can be purchased and autographed by Sandie and Arline.

Heading into Monday and the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday we're looking at cloudy skies with a daytime high around 50 degrees. City, state and federal offices are closed as are schools. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, "Photo Finished 2020" at the Community Development Building the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit.

Winterfest is here, and the theme, Carson's Got Game, is more than just a nice motto, it is a series of multiple physical board games, playground games, and video games. According to CHS physical education teacher and Leadership adviser Ann Britt, “the class color teachers will be playing a game of life-size Hungry Hippo during the assembly Jan. 17, and we will be doing a door decorating competition with judging taking place Jan. 21; the top three winners will receive a gift card to Starbucks.”

The first significant winter storm of 2020 will be blowing into the region Thursday afternoon, bringing gusty winds, heavy snow in the Sierra and 1-2 inches of snow possible in the lower valleys. How many students ever apply to participate in a contest, let alone actually do it and win 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or even 5th place? The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department host an open house to discuss planning efforts for the 2,500-acre Prison Hill Recreation Area and adjacent properties.
