Being a student at Carson High School is rewarding enough, academically speaking, but learning is happening everywhere; however, forcing a teacher to dress in pink, from head to toe, wearing a pink tutu, is a different story and an exciting fundraising opportunity.

The Carson High School Retro-Homecoming and Respect Week went without a hitch, and the beauty of it was administrators, teachers, and staff had nothing whatsoever to do with making the decisions as the students chose both the candidates and the winners.

Babysitting classes have often been offered in the Carson City area by a variety of agencies, but none have been offered during a pandemic until now.

When the Elko County Emergency Operations Center put in a call March 31 to their local University of Nevada, Reno Extension office saying they needed face masks, Extension’s 4-H youth and their families swung into action, making masks not only for the Operations Center, but also for their local School District nutrition services workers who are helping to serve lunches to students who receive free and reduced meals.

Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

Heading into the first day of the work week, if you're an early, early riser or are settling in for the night, you'll want to step outside at around 3 a.m. for the peak of the Perseid shower, which will be in the eastern sky. If you missed them, there will be a viewing party hosted by Carson City Parks and Rec at the Jack C. Davis Observatory at WNC beginning at midnight Tuesday morning, August 13. Otherwise, it's onward and upward into the day with a Cooperative Extension presentation, Shred Kids mountain bike camp, Red Cross sitter certification class, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Heading into the Independence Day holiday weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region to keep the next three days jam-packed with excitement.

The Fourth of July will be colored with parades, barbecues, carnivals, concerts and plenty of fireworks around Carson City, Carson Valley, Lake Tahoe and Virginia City.

During the 2018 Carson City Fair, Carson Now held a coloring contest which produced 53 excellent entries, voted on by 433 voters. The entries were on display through the weekend in the exhibition hall of Fuji Park.

Mary Rose “Mosey” Vargas Covington passed away on April 2, 2018. Born in Auburn, California in November of 1942, Mosey grew up on a Sierra foothills ranch in Placer County and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1960. She came to the eastern Sierra Nevada in 1965 where she taught two generations of children and raised her own family.

The Carson Cluckers 4H poultry club, part of the UNR Extension program in Carson City, decorated more than 100 chicken cookies.

Stop by the Carson City Library on May 17th for two programs that we are offering for youth and families.

Do you believe in magic? The Friends of the Carson Middle School Band Program hope you do and come out to enjoy an evening of illusion at the Community Center. Earth week kicks off at Western Nevada College with a clothing donation drive for Big Brothers and Sisters. Learn about various organizations, Carson City history and heritage, and enter the free raffle at tonight’s ‘Explore Culture and Diversity’ event at the Carson Library. Join the boys of J and M Productions for another fun night of karaoke at Caterpillar’s Hookah Lounge.

The Nevada State Fair returns to Carson City Thursday, June 9 and will occupy Mills Park until Sunday, June 12. Free to attend, the Fair features live music, carnival rides, a car show, County exhibits, civil war reenactments, and more. Free parking can be found at Carson High School.

One last weekend until Nevada Day, and the ghosts and ghouls are coming out of the woodwork. Learn our haunted history with the Downtown Ghost Walk. For thrills and chills, don’t miss the Second Annual Carson Creepy Short Horror Film Competition in the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall. This edition of It's Your City with Cortney Bloomer features Vern Krahn of the Carson City Parks and Recreation Department. The two discuss the upcoming 2015 Nevada Fair which begins noon, Thursday at Fuji Park.

The Nevada Fair will have a limited number of prepaid parking passes. There are only 100 passes available. Prepaid reserved parking passes go on sale Tuesday, July 7. They are $20 for one vehicle for all 4 days of the fair.

There is a limited number of 100 passes available, on a first come first serve basis. They are available at the Carson City Treasurer's Office located in City Hall at 201 N. Carson Street.

Currently playing at the Carson City Community Center is the "House of Bernalda Alba" performed by CHS Theater students. The dramatic play had its first show this past weekend. It will continue this coming weekend with performances on Oct. 9, 10, 11 at 7p.m. and again at 2 p.m. on Oct. 11. General admission prices are $10 at the door, $5 for students. To support the Buy Nevada campaign, special license plates will go on sale at the Department of Motor Vehicles beginning Monday, July 14 with the proceeds to benefit agricultural education and promote the state’s ag industry, the Nevada Department of Agriculture and Nevada FFA announced Friday.

The Carson City Harvest Hub, along with food production programs in Douglas and Lyon counties, have been awarded funding through the Nevada Department of Agriculture, officials announced Monday.

Grant awards amounting to $250,730 will go to 13 programs throughout Northern Nevada for crop research, education marketing and production.

4Paws 4H dog club is hosting Part 2 of Deputy Officer Jimmy Surratt of the Carson City Sheriff's Department Canine Unit and his K-9, Ary, at its next meeting, Thursday, Sept. 19, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Fuji Park's Exhibit Hall.

He and Ary, a Belgian Malinois, will be demonstrating police training moves utlizing another officer in a bite suit. Then, Officer Surratt will have a brief question and answer period. 4Paws 4H dog club is hosting a guest speaker, Officer Jimmy Sherratt of the Carson City Sheriff's Department Canine Unit at its next meeting, Thursday, September 12, 2013 at 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Fuji Park's Exhibit Hall. The meeting is open to children age 5-19 and their families. After a demonstration and presentation by Officer Sherratt and his canine companion, he will have a brief question and answer period. Teams of school children from Carson City with a knack for building and design will join students throughout Northern Nevada in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) challenge, Saturday, Dec. 8 at Sparks High School.

FIRST is founded by inventor Dean Kamen as a way to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. The competition brings its biggest-ever annual FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL®) season to Northern Nevada with the 2012 “Senior Solutions℠” Challenge.
 

Pat Wiggins, director of Animal Services for Carson City, has resigned after 10 years of service.

According to a news release by Carson City Health and Human Services, Wiggins is responsible for recently bringing the progressive “Trap Neuter Release” program for feral cats to Carson City and was a regular presenter at Capital City Farm Days, an annual educational program for students held at Fuji Park.
