Carson High students help bridge digital divide with senior citizens in tech support initiative

Carson High School is helping bridge the digital divide with elderly citizens by providing tech support through the school’s Interact Club. The initiative underscores the power of intergenerational solidarity by allowing local high school students to volunteer their time and expertise to help older populations navigate the complexities of modern technology.
The initiative was launched in response to the growing need for digital literacy among senior citizens and to foster meaningful connections between generations. With the rapid pace of technological advancement, elderly citizens often find themselves left behind, struggling to keep up with basic digital tasks that are essential in today’s world.
Small groups of tech-savvy teenagers make their way to the Carson City Senior Center to assist with laptops, tablets and smartphones. The sessions are tailored to meet the specific needs and interests of each elderly participant and include everything from adding email, sending emails, online shopping, using social media, installing and uninstalling apps, understating apps and adding shortcuts.
“This initiative is more than just a tech support program, it's about building relationships,” said Naomi Redwine, information technology support technician at Carson High School. "These young volunteers are not only helping seniors stay connected with their families and communities, they're also gaining insights into the rich life experiences of the older generation."
Many senior citizens feel isolated because they cannot keep up with the ever-changing digital world, Redwine continued. Through Carson High’s Interact Club, many senior citizens are connecting with grandchildren and great grandchildren.
“Next school year, we plan to have mini demonstrations on identifying scams in the digital world,” she said. “This program serves as a shining example of how empathy and technology can come together to make a real difference in people's lives.”
