Varsity Boys Start Off With A Tough Loss
It is that time of year again for winter sports in the NIAA Northern Region. The beginning of this year's basketball season took place Thursday evening in the Carson High School Gymnasium as the Cougars of Spanish Springs took on the Senators of Carson in a heated varsity boys basketball show down.
Spanish Springs started off hot with a couple of lay ups to take the lead early. The score with 30 seconds left in the first was only 6-3 Spanish Springs thanks to some aggressive play form both ends racking up 7 fouls in just the first quarter. A Spanish Springs free throw later left us with a score of 7-3 at the end of the first. The second quarter was much more satisfying as far as points go and after a couple successful lay ups and bonus fouls from each squad, the score going into half time was Carson: 14, Spanish Springs: 20.
Carson made a lot of progress in the third quarter to make a game of the contest, so the score entering the final quarter was 23-26 Spanish Springs. The fourth quarter was very back and forth with a 29-32 Spanish Springs lead with a minute and seven seconds left. The Senators came within 3 again at 33-36, but after a failed three point buzzer beater found the rim instead of the net, the final score of this contest was 36-33 Spanish Springs.
The Senators next contest is against the Hug Hawks on Friday, December 19th at 7:00 at Carson.
