Dayton area experiences haboob wind anomaly
Easterly winds of more than 20 mph in the Stagecoach Valley blew across the dry lake bed near Break-A-Heart Road and created a haboob for Churchill Estates, and the Dayton and Stagecoach areas on Thursday afternoon.
East ridge winds will continue Thursday night into Friday morning, according to the National Weather Service. East wind anomalies are robust. A haboob is a type of intense dust storm carried on an atmospheric gravity current. Haboobs occur regularly in dry land area regions throughout the world.
Shower and thunderstorm chances have returned as low pressure moves over the Sierra and western and west-central Nevada. Some snow could accumulate in the Sierra above 9,000 feet by Friday, according to the weather service.
Chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms will stick around Friday through the weekend. However, while an isolated shower or thunderstorm cannot be ruled out in western and west-central Nevada, the best chances will retreat to the Sierra.
