Nevada Humanities Earth Day Conversation About Cultivating Environmental Literacy to Feature 2021 Nevada Reads Authors
Nevada Humanities welcomes Nevadans to join in a free, virtual Meet the Authors Earth Day Conversation between the authors of 2021 Nevada Reads books on Thursday, April 22, 2021, at 2-3 pm PDT on Zoom.
Kendra Atleework, author of Miracle Country: A Memoir, and Aimee Nezhukumatathil, author of World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments, will join in a discussion and Q&A, which will be moderated by author and educator Gayle Brandeis, around the 2021 Nevada Reads theme, “Cultivating Environmental Literacy.”
Our authors will discuss their respective books, their experiences and motivation for writing these memoirs, and their thoughts on the connection between literature and the natural world. This event requires advance registration; register for this event at nevadahumanities.org.
Nevada Reads is a statewide book club that invites Nevadans to read selected works of literature and then come together in their communities to share ideas and perceptions inspired by the books they have read. Programming featuring the selected books will take place throughout the state in 2021, including online book clubs, outdoor adventures, virtual discussions and workshops, and community partnership-led initiatives. Program details will be announced throughout the year. Visit nevadahumanities.org for news and information.
"In this year of recovery, Nevada Humanities has been working to engage Nevadans by offering public programs that both inspire and restore, which the Nevada landscape does in spades,” says Christina Barr, Nevada Humanities Executive Director. “We are delighted to celebrate Earth Day with our Nevada Reads 2021 authors, and we hope that this conversation plants the seeds for ways in which we can reimagine our relationships with the environment and become better stewards of the earth."
Nevada Humanities is also offering a new series of free online workshops inspired by the illustrations and themes found in World of Wonders by Aimee Nezhukumatathil. Wonders of Nature: Creative Workshops with Nevada Humanities encourages participants to spend time together learning new artistic techniques from artists around Nevada and to think deeply and creatively about the natural world.
Upcoming Nevada Reads creative workshops include: Wonders of Nature: Exploring the Beauty of Bird Feathers Using Gouache and Pen with Eunkang Koh on April 21 at 4-5 pm and April 25 at 10-11 am; and Wonders of Nature: The Mood of Clouds with Sidne Teske on April 28 at 4-5 pm. Register for workshops here.
