Free seminar to address dementia and other brain diseases

March 21, 2024 (All day) In this month’s free Retired Living Truth Series seminar, attendees will literally get a chance to “pick the brains” of experts in aging, neuroscience, and memory care as they share the in’s and out’s of diagnosing, managing, and living with brain disease.
“The topic of brain disease isn’t fun or sexy, but it is on the minds of people everywhere,” said series co-founder and co-host Brett Junell. “As human beings, we love the fact that we are in control of our lives, so the idea of developing a disease of the brain can be terrifying. It’s also very confusing.”
There are many types of brain diseases such as dementia – including Alzheimer’s Disease – Parkinson's Disease, and Multiple Sclerosis (MS) to name a few. So, the information can be difficult to digest.
“The goal of this month’s seminar is to debunk many of the longstanding myths associated with age related changes, getting older, and brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s,” said series co-founder Annette Junell.
She offered some startling statistics from the Alzheimer’s Association:
• An estimated 6.7 million Americans over age 65 were living with Alzheimer’s dementia in 2023.
• About 1 in 9 people (10.8%) over age 65 have Alzheimer’s dementia.
• Two-thirds of Americans over age 65 with Alzheimer’s dementia (4.1 million) are women.
• Deaths due to Alzheimer’s disease between 2000 and 2019 have more than doubled, increasing 145%.
• 1 in 3 seniors dies with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia.
Seminar panelists are Dr Jon Artz, MD, Neurologist, Renown Medical Group & UNR School of Medicine; Dr Mindy Lokshin, MD, MSPH, Chair, Parkinson Support Center of Northern Nevada and Niki Rubarth, Regional Director, Alzheimer's Association, Northern Nevada.
Some of the questions they will address include:
• Will we lose our memory as we age?
• Do thinking and reasoning eventually slow down?
• What are the signs of a healthy or unhealthy brain?
• Is there anything I can do to avoid having dementia or other brain diseases?
Attendees will have opportunities to ask their own questions, as well. It’s a learning session for everyone. "The seminar series gets me thinking about things I just hadn't thought about before, that I discovered I really need to know," said past attendee Margaret Tippett.
“The Truth about Brain Disease: Knowledge is Power” will be March 21, from 10-11:30 am in the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, 4590 South Virginia St, Reno.
