Comment on Nevada is greening…slowly by Dave Morgan
Unfortunately it is becoming more and more apparent that the countries and environments of the world are much more tightly connected than we’ve been willing to acknowledge. Coal fired plants in China cause acid rain in the U.S. Our own coal plants in the mid-west cause acid rain on the east coast, and coal plants worldwide are contributing substantially to the heating up of the planet. Somewhere along the line we’ve got to stop worrying about our own little corner of the globe and become part of the solution rather than playing the “jobs” card every time someone wants our cooperation. Our Earth is but a tiny blue dot against the vast empty black of the universe. We’ve got to take care of it. It’s the only Earth we’ve got! And sure enough, Nevadans have an incredibly interesting, and potentially exquisitely profitable opportunity to tap Nevada’s vast, and I mean VAST geothermal resources…resources that could provide most of the energy needs of the whole country. Scientists world-wide are racing to be the first to perfect what’s called “injection geothermal” power. It’s a method of extracting the heat of the Earth’s core to drive steam turbines that generate electricity. It’s a process that will probably use already well established oil drilling technology that accesses deep underground oil and natural gas resources. By drilling down through Nevada’s relatively thin Earth’s crust, access to hot rock would produce transferable heat in quantities previously unimagined. So instead of lamenting the loss of a few coal plant jobs, why doesn’t Nevada show some initiative beyond “slash and burn” state budgeting and get on with the program of emerging geothermal?
