CARSON CITY — It’s been nearly two decades since the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda sinisterly carried out the single deadliest human terrorist attack ever by crashing hijacked passenger airplanes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

Fifth-grade Teacher Steven Vradenburg at Fremont Elementary School in Carson City was recently offered and selected, one of only 40 teachers in the country and the only teacher from the state of Nevada, to participate in a nationwide fellowship program from Empatico.

Several hundred made their way Wednesday evening to the 9-11 Memorial at Mills Park for a remembrance of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorists attacks on American soil, paying tribute to those who lost their lives with words, song, prayer and hope.

The opening line to Charles Dickens' “A Tale of Two Cities” is a fitting description of Sept. 11, 2001.

That fated Tuesday and the days immediately following it truly were, for those of us who witnessed the events unfold, altogether the worst of times and the best of times.

On the same day, we watched two jetliners burst into fireballs after striking both towers of the World Trade Center in Manhattan and dozens of heroic first responders run toward danger, putting themselves courageously in harm’s way to rescue people trapped inside.

The death and destruction caused by terrorists at the World Trade Center and Pentagon 18 years ago remained close to people’s hearts and memories Wednesday during a memorial event at Western Nevada College in Carson City.

On Wednesday, March 14, the Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) will present a talk by Carson City’s Arts & Culture Director Mark Salinas.

His illustrated talk, "Choices, Chances, and Changes," is part of CCAI’s ongoing Nevada Neighbors series and will take place at 6 p.m. at the Union restaurant, 302 W. Proctor St in Carson City.

There will be an informal reception for Salinas preceding the event at 5:30 p.m. No tickets needed; the public is cordially invited.

As you drive through Carson City today, the flags at half-mast are a somber reminder of the lives lost during the attack on the World Trade Center. If you’d like some time to reflect, the memorial in Mills Park is the perfect setting. Learn how to lend a hand to the next generation during a volunteer workshop at the Senior Citizen’s Center: reading help is needed and the volunteer commitment is only one hour a week. They say laughter is the best medicine, and funny-lady Kat Simmons is the prescription.

Monday is this generation's day that will live in infamy as millions of Americans remember the sacrifices made by first-responders, the military, airline passengers aboard four jets and thousands of people who worked in the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon.

Dozens attended a ceremony this morning in Mills Park, commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Sept. 11 Terrorist Attacks on the World Trade Center in New York, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and United Flight 93 over Pennsylvania.

One last chance awaits to enjoy the Reno Balloon Races or Virginia City’s annual Camel Races, so don’t miss out. A remembrance ceremony will take place at the World Trade Center I-Beam Memorial in Mills Park to honor those lost fifteen years ago. Grab the whole family and a picnic for the final ‘Concert on the Green’ in the Genoa Park. The Trey Stone Trio will entertain as weekend winds to a close.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval signed Executive Order 2016-28 that orders all flags to fly at half-staff on Sunday, September 11 from sunrise to sunset in recognition of Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance for those victims of the terrorists attacks 15 years ago.

The Carson City community is invited to attend a brief 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday, September 11th, at 8:15 a.m. at the World Trade Center I-beam memorial in Mills Park.

Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval, City of Fallon Mayor Ken Tedford, various city council members and local residents honor the heroes and the lives lost in the September 11, 2001 attacks during the 15th annual memorial service held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, September 11 in the City Hall Courtyard.

Please join Governor Sandoval, City of Fallon Mayor Ken Tedford and City Council to honor the heroes and those lost during the September 11, 2001 attacks. The event is open to the public and includes a permanent display of an original steel beam from the fallen World Trade Center as well as a patriotic performance by local elementary school children.

No one should have to fight blindly against the enemy — knowledge IS power, and the truth of any situation even more powerful. No one has ever had all the facts for a set of circumstances or a certain situation, only God has the entire picture, so human expertise has its limitations. However, gathering as many facts as possible, organizing them in a logical progression, studying them carefully, looking for strengths and weaknesses, can ultimately bring together a rather comprehensive picture for all to see.

As lead prosecutor, Andrew McCarthy, continued to involve himself and his legal team in further and deeper knowledge of the enemy in order to successfully bring to trial and to win the U.S. government's case against Sheik Abdel Rahman, aka the Blind Sheik, for the World Trade Center bombing which killed and maimed hundreds of Americans in 1993 in New York City.

It has been said, this 8 million dollar project will enhance the downtown area to better provide residents with a fantastic dining, shopping and recreation venue. This statement is without substantiation. As far as I know, business activity numbers are accrued citywide not by area.

Much of Carson High Schools’ success flows from the voluntary assistance of individuals and businesses selflessly giving of their time, their effort, and their resources to the advancement of Carson City’s youth and local community.

Carson City residents gathered Friday in Mills Park with law officers and firefighters to remember the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The service was held surrounding a I-beam memorial that was given to Carson City in 2010 by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Among the flowers placed on the beam was as an American flag presented to the Carson City Fire Department by Michael Manfredo. The flag was given to the Carson City man by a son of one of the 343 fighters killed at the World Trade Center that day.

Many of us will never forget where we were when we first heard about the hijacking and subsequent attacks on the World Trade Center. September 11, 2001 is burned into our collective memory. At 8:30 a.m. this morning there will be a memorial service at the 9/11 Memorial in Mills Park where an I-beam from the fallen towers now serves as a reminder. Even if you cannot make it to the ceremony, please take a moment of silence to remember.

Sgt. David J. Drakulich loved to paint and draw as a child. But when the Reno native, then 16 years old, saw the hijacked planes hit the World Trade Center in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001, he put aside his artwork and began training to join the U.S. Army.

RENO – GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney told about 3,700 members of the National Guard Association of the United States here today that now is not the time to weaken the nation’s military.

On the 11^th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Romney said the return of the country’s troops from Iraq and the impending return of troops from Afghanistan in 2014 cannot be used as an excuse to impose devastating cuts on the Defense Department.

On this day of remebrance, it has been pointed out to me that few people know of the presence of this memorial. This beam is from (I believe) the north tower of the World Trade Center. It was given to the good people of Carson City by the Port Authority of New York to mark that fateful day.

It is located in Mills Park, at the eastern edge of the Pony Express Pavillion (near the snack bar).

It is a piece of history that should not be forgotten.

The new film "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" by director Stephen Daldry ("The Hours") playing at the Fandango Galaxy cineplex in Carson City a story about a 9-year old boy Oskar Schell (Thomas Horn) who loses his father in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. He suffers perhaps from Asperger's and a clear case of overwhelming anxiety.
