Forest Service: Wildfire in Desolation Wilderness started by illegal campfire

An illegal campfire touched off a wildfire Tuesday in the Desolation Wilderness at Granite Lake. Firefighters responded quickly, despite high winds, and were able to keep the fire from spreading, according to a U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman.

The ramps at Canyon Dam, the USFS at Almanor and Rec. 1 and 2 ramps are operational. Trolling the east basin has been the better bet. Some coves are starting to ice over.

Forest Service at Lake Tahoe to host job fair

A job fair hosted by the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will be held Jan. 27, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Forest Supervisor’s Office at 35 College Drive, South Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Supervisors of temporary positions will be available to speak with interested applicants and answer questions about this year’s summer jobs, as well as the Pathways student intern program. Positions are available in fire, fisheries, wildlife, botany, visitor services, roads and trails, recreation and wilderness, and vegetation and timber management.

Lyon County investigators continue investigation into disappearance of Alea Clark

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is continuing their investigation into the disappearance of Alea Clark who was reportedly last seen in the Dayton area on Jan. 6, 2015.

Pursuant to this investigation, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office served a search warrant on Wednesday, Jan. 14 on a Dayton home in the 200 block of Grosh Avenue. Her current residence is in California but she had been in the Dayton and Silver Springs area visiting family and friends when she disappeared.

Snow Biking at Red Lake

After a long wait with much anticipation, I finally got a chance to take the new fat bike out for its first snow ride. Acting on a tip that there was good snow cover with several miles of snow machine tracks up near Carson Pass, I loaded the bike up in the car and headed up to Red Lake on Highway 88.

Environmental groups, Forest Service settle Sierra Nevada forest plan lawsuit

Environmental groups and the U.S. Forest Service signed a settlement agreement earlier this month that ends a decade-long legal battle over the 2004 Sierra Nevada Framework Forest Plan Amendment, which affects management of the Sierra Nevada national forests in California.
