The Nevada Artist Association has a new exhibit on display in their gallery at the Brewery Arts Center; the Late Summer Regular Show begins today. The Nevada Arts Council has a rotating gallery.

Ready, set, GO! Whether you want to watch camels race, or hot air balloons light up the sky, this is a great weekend in Northern Nevada. If cool cars are more your style, join the Freaks of Nature Car Club at a show and shine in the parking lot of Yogurt Beach in North Carson. It’s root, root, root for the home team as the WNC Wildcats play a double header at Harvey Field.

Washoe language class seeks to retain native culture

Spend a few minutes talking to Herman Fillmore and you quickly learn how deeply he cares about the Washoe people, language and culture. As a young adult living at the Dresslerville Colony of the Washoe Indians in Gardnerville, Fillmore has taken enormous steps to establish the revival of his native Wašiw language.

Today, being hungry can be helpful. A benefit for fallen Deputy Carl Howell takes place today at Betsy’s Café inside Slot World with all café proceeds going to his family. If you're hungry for something a little different, try the Improv Workshop at the Brewery Arts Center. You'll be thinking outside the box in no time.

The long weekend is over, and we won’t have another three day weekend until Nevada Day. Weather is heating back up, so at least it won’t feel like autumn, just yet. If you want to break out of your routine, try swing dancing. Beginners lessons are taught on Tuesdays at El Charro Avita. If country is more your thing, Carson Lanes offers lessons on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Jazz and Poetry at Comma Coffee with the Mile High Jazz Band is sure to be a good time.

If you need to brush up on your line dancing skills, Beercade is the place to go for free lessons. It takes two to tango, but you don’t need a partner to learn to salsa at El Charro Avita tonight. If you’re more song and less dance, you can choose from Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar or the Feisty Goat Pub for karaoke. Fandango kicks off a month of Throwback Thursdays tonight with crooner Rick Radecki singing hits from yesteryear.

Step into the past with Wild Bill Hickock and Buffalo Bill Cody at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park. Enjoy the new art exhibit at Comma Coffee; ‘See the World Through My Eyes’ by Linda Arnn Arteno is the feature of tonight’s artist reception.

Lifelong passion for stargazing and science to benefit WNC students

The medical staff of Carson Tahoe Health has announced the Jack L. Davis Memorial Scholarship fund to benefit Western Nevada College students, in memory of the orthopedic surgeon who passed away earlier this year.

The memorial scholarship, administered by the Western Nevada College Foundation, is designed to support and encourage the science professionals of tomorrow by contributing $1,000 each year to two Western Nevada College students pursuing degrees in the sciences.

50 students named to Western Nevada College summer dean’s list

Western Nevada College has named 50 students to the Summer 2015 Dean’s List. To qualify for WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least six units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

WNC Athletics: Recruits remain loyal to Western Nevada College baseball, softball programs

Even though plans are in place to eliminate the Western Nevada College baseball and softball programs after the 2016 season due to funding shortfalls, most of the incoming freshman recruits plan to honor their letters of intent.

Prioritizing Nevada’s workforce: NV Energy Foundation gives WNC $25,000 grant

Western Nevada College’s Applied Industrial Technology program, which saw a 50 percent increase in student enrollment between 2014 and 2015, will begin renovations to expand its current facility, thanks to a $25,000 grant from the NV Energy Foundation.

Hold on to your hats, Carson City, summer isn’t ready to quit us just yet. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

WNC’s Jump Start College Program receives grant for student scholarships

Hundreds of Northern Nevada high school students will receive a $300 Jump Start College scholarship for the spring 2016 semester at Western Nevada College campuses across the region, thanks to a donation from the William N. Pennington Foundation.

Western Nevada College students welcome Silver State Opportunity Grant

Many low-income students at Western Nevada College are learning firsthand this week that the state has their educational goals in mind.

The 2015 Nevada Legislature allocated $2.5 million for financial assistance to students for the 2015-16 and 2016-17 school years.

Let’s all go to the Fair! The grand opening and ribbon cutting is at Fuji Park at noon. Funnel cakes, clowns, rabbits, circus games and more await. If you’re a classic car lover, then the Plaza Hotel is the place for you. The annual Silver Dollar Car Classic kicks off tonight with music and more before it moves on to its traditional place at Mills Park. Jelly Bread is in town and playing a free show at Sassafras, and celebrate your July birthday at the Carson Cigar Bar with their monthly birthday bash.

FISH thrift store renovation on North Carson Street moves forward

The renovation of the FISH thrift store in Carson City will advance beginning Thursday as volunteer crews commence the reframing of the building. The store will remain open for business during the renovation.

Volunteers from Black Pine Construction and the Kiwanis Club will remove the large glass panes from the storefront and install a new framing for the planned Western design. The demolition phase of the project was completed in May by volunteers from the Western Nevada College Construction Program.

Can you believe it? It’s the last weekend of July and the kids will be headed back to school in no time. Don’t be dismayed though, plenty of summer fun can still be found. Sign the kids up for the Capital City Kids’ Triathlon at the Carson Aquatic Center. Head out to Mills Park for a few laps on the train or a picnic. Don’t miss out on making a bowl for the Empty Bowls project at the Farmers Market; or let the kids run off to the bounce house while you make a bowl yourself.

  • Capital City Kids' Triathlon: Swim, Bike, Run at the Carson Aquatic Center: 841 N. WNC offers driver education classes for young drivers

Western Nevada College is offering New Driver Education Classes this summer and fall that will help young drivers fulfill Nevada law requirements and strengthen skill areas that are usually lacking.

The four-session courses are available to those age 15 and older at the WNC Carson City, Fallon and Minden campuses, as well as in Fernley. They are offered on Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., plus one session Monday through Thursday, Aug. 3-6, in Carson City. The course cost is $100.
