The event, starting at 11 a.m., begins with the reading of a proclamation by Carson City Supervisor Brad Bonkowski, proclaiming October as Carson City Bullying Prevention Month, followed by Sheriff Ken Furlong talking about bullying and stranger safety from a law enforcement perspective.

$2.5 million Head Start grant secured for Nevada

The $2,559,327 grant is designed to expand projects in Nevada and will be funded through the University of Nevada Reno, said Sen. Harry Reid.

Nevada Agriculture department urges horse owners to vaccinate for West Nile Virus
Submitted by editor on Wed, 05/07/2014 - 9:49amWith mosquito season arriving, the Nevada Department of Agriculture urges horse owners to contact their veterinarians and update their animals’ West Nile Virus vaccinations.
The virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, which are active in warm seasons. Since 2004, there have been 205 confirmed West Nile Virus in Nevada horses, said Bob Conrad of the Nevada Department of Agriculture.
UNR announces plan to go tobacco-free in 2015

This action has been endorsed through resolutions of support by the UNR Faculty Senate, Staff Employees Council, Graduate Student Association and Associated Students of the University of Nevada. The University will join nearly 1,200 other U.S. colleges and universities that have implemented a tobacco-free policy.
Carson City health educator applauds decision by CVS to end sale of smokes, tobacco products

Humane Society national office urges BLM to return Carson City wild horses back to public land
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 03/05/2013 - 3:31pmUPDATE: Wild horse advocates will hold a rally in front of the Nevada Legislature Thursday, March 7, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to protest the BLM's decision to remove a herd of 11 wild horses from the area. The advocates say the want the horses, picked up from the BLM last week, to be put back into the wild. The BLM contends the horses have been problematic and pose a safety hazard.

The Humane Society of the United States is the latest animal rights organization to denounce the Bureau of Land Management’s decision to remove a small band of wild horses located east of Carson City, Nev., in the Pine Nut Herd Management Area.

BLM: Wild horse bait trapping in Carson City meant public safety concerns

The horses are a part of the Pine Nut Mountains herd management area (HMA) that is adjacent to Deer Run Road in Carson City. These horses routinely cross the Carson River into River View City Park, where the BLM has received several complaints of people feeling threatened by the wild horses.

It was a refreshing change from so many discussions I've observed over the past two years. . . mostly angry shouting matches. Marilee Swirczek wrote recently about the "shout-out" at WNC which turned unruly when some opponents of the City Center Project started pushing and shoving an invited guest. I'm glad I wasn't there.
