I wanted them to decompose and feed the soil, but with the extreme winds here in Washoe Valley, they continually blew back against the door. We ended up raking and moving the same leaves over and over again. Well, that’s not happening anymore!

At least 100 4-H youth from Carson City and Storey County received recognition for their accomplishments during the year.

A colleague asked me today how to winterize the drip system at a school garden she has been working on, a timely fall topic.

Pesticide Safety Education Workshop offered statewide November 13

The workshop is meant for certified applicators and those wanting to become certified, including people who regularly handle pesticides as part of their jobs, such as farmers, ranchers, park employees and groundskeepers. Attendees will receive continuing education units.

I mentioned to my friend Will that I thought yellowjackets bite rather than sting. He said he didn’t think so, saying not only did they sting, but they could sting repeatedly. Well, he was right, but so was I.

The ideal is to avoid staking or guying trees if at all possible. What determines the need for staking is the size and type of tree, the size of the root mass, wind conditions for the site, soil type and moisture.

Safety day planned for area youth Saturday at Carson City's Mills Park

Dahlias are gorgeous and are diverse in color, shape and size. I saw ruffled dahlias the color of blazing sunsets with tangerine outer edges and deep yellow centers.

"Just recently, I found this growing out in the desert on BLM land about a mile or two past our neighborhood," the reader wrote, "and would like to know what it is, if it's going to spread, does it kill its host, and if I should do something about it.”

It’s a good thing that watermelon is a part of this summer holiday’s food mix because its health benefits may have helped counteract the impacts of the assortment of less-than-healthy foods we eat that day.
