Carson City loan manager jailed; admits to stealing $4,200 and taking it to casino

A 34-year-old Dayton woman faces a felony embezzlement charge after she admitted to authorities that she stole $4,200 from a Carson City loan agency that she managed and then spent a portion of the money at a local casino.

Tonya Ann Ramirez was jailed Wednesday after an interview with Carson City Sheriff's Office investigators which led to the confession. She also told authorities she had a gambling problem and had filed a false police report with the Lyon County Sheriff's Office in an attempt to conceal her actions.

Here’s an advance notice of something very special in the Outdoor world that will occur in just a few days: Draw a great big red circle around the date of Saturday, June 8 on your calendar and then plan to have a fun-filled day in the Great Outdoors.

June 8 is Nevada’s Free Fishing Day for the year 2013. On that day, you can fish anywhere you want, and not need a Nevada fishing license or a Nevada Trout Stamp or a Nevada Second Rod Stamp.

Memorial Day boaters at Lake Tahoe reminded to clean, drain and dry

Boaters planning to launch at Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day Weekend are reminded to arrive at one of five watercraft inspection stations clean, drained and dry in order to get through the inspection process and out on the water more quickly.

All boats entering Lake Tahoe without a Lake Tahoe wire inspection seal are required to go through a mandatory inspection and purchase an inspection sticker as part of the public, private, multi-agency effort to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invasive species (AIS). Minden resident Krista Lukas has published her debut poetry collection "Fans of My Unconscious." She will read from her collection at two venues in June: the Mile High Jazz Band’s Jazz and Poetry event at Comma Coffee in Carson City on June 11, 7:30 p.m., and the Ventana Sierra Advanced Writers Conference at Western Nevada College in Carson City on June 14 at 6:30 p.m.

The book is published by The Black Rock Press, University of Nevada, Reno, 2013.

Children's choir gives voice to historic Virginia and Truckee Railroad season

A 60-second radio spot sung by the Sierra Nevada Children's Choir will be used as part of the Virginia & Truckee Railroad 2013 advertising campaign.

Truckee River requirement for AIS decal

Official will be on hand at the Reno River Festival to answer questions.

With the annual Reno River Festival taking place this weekend, the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) wants to remind paddle craft users that they are required to purchase an Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) decal to use canoes and kayaks on the Truckee River.

This AIS decal program was created to combat the growing menace of AIS in Nevada’s waterways.

Carson City woman with stun gun in her purse jailed on felony drug charges

A 42-year-old Carson City woman was jailed Saturday and faces two felony drug charges and a charge of being a felon in possession of an electronic stun gun.

Patricia Louise Barkley, was arrested at 12:11 p.m. April 20 on East Nye. According to the arrest report, officers stopped a vehicle based on information that the owner faced a warrant for his arrest.

Outdoors with Don Q: Saturday, April 27 is the 2013 California Opener

This is my annual reminder that it’s almost time to have fun fishing in the High Sierras once again.
On Saturday, April 27 the 2013 fishing season will open for all applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California.

That season will then remain open until Friday, Nov. 15.

Bill Would Fund $2 Million Toward After-School Literacy Program

Earlier today, Reno City Councilman Oscar Delgado testified before the Senate Committee on Finance. Delgado spoke in favor of Senate Bill 398, a measure that would help fund the implementation of the AfterSchool KidzLitz literacy program in Nevada Boys and Girls Clubs.

“Education does not stop at three o’clock,” Delgado said.

Outdoors with Don Q: Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing in March

This is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.

And, with our current fabulous weather, you would be remiss if you did not take advantage of our record setting high temperatures, it may not last!

Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can run into “Double Digits” in weight. That's big!
