Carson City firefighters respond to structure fire on Gentry Lane

UPDATE: The structure fire at a Gentry Lane home is now under control, reports Carson City Assistant Fire Chief Tom Tarulli. The fire was situated in the high-peak roof area of the home. The cause has not yet been determined, he said.

Firefighters knocked it down within 30 minutes of the call. Damage to the home is between $80,000 to $100,000, said Battalion Chief John Arneson.

Lake Tahoe boat inspection program continues success in fighting invasive species

With more than 14,000 inspections made thus far, Lake Tahoe’s waters remain free of new invasive species, a major threats to the overall health of Lake Tahoe and surrounding water bodies, according to watercraft inspection data and scientific reports.

During the 2013 boating season Tahoe Resource Conservation District watercraft inspectors performed more than 7,000 new inspections, including both newly inspected vessels and those with intact Tahoe-issued inspection seals.

Grass Valley woman jailed on DUI, eluding after chase from Truckee ends near Verdi

A Grass Valley woman was arrested Friday after a chase with the California Highway Patrol from California into Nevada, according to the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Wendy N. Parish, 23, faces criminal charges of DUI drugs, driving without a valid driver’s license, and attempting to elude a police officer. Bail is $25,350 and she remains in custody as of Saturday afternoon, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

Fourth annual 'Cookies with Santa' at Adele's to benefit Ron Wood Family Resource Center

Former Nevada Assemblywoman Vivian Freeman dies

Former Nevada Assemblywoman and hospital trustee Vivian Freeman died Thursday at her home in Reno. She was 86 years old.

She successfully underwent kidney transplant surgery in 2011 and passed away due to complications from a stroke she suffered on Nov. 26. In accordance with her wishes, she asked that all treatment be stopped so that she could return home where she died at 11:00 a.m. PST on Thursday, Dec. 5.

Injured bear euthanized at Lake Tahoe, another to be released Friday near Spooner

Nevada Department of Wildlife officials handled two bears on Thursday, trapping one near Reno while the other was found injured at Lake Tahoe and had to be euthanized.

The injured bear was found in Incline Village at around 8 a.m. Game wardens had been informed the bear was hurt, possibly by a vehicle, and was observed not being able to use its back legs. The bear was tranquilized and examined by a veterinarian before being put down due to the severity of its injuries.

Hello fellow anglers, Time is running short if you plan on fishing the rivers in Alpine County.
November 15, 2013 is the last day to fish on any of the rivers in California, with the exception of a few that will remain open to catch and release.

In our local area, the east fork of the Carson River from Hangman's Bridge to the Nevada state line is on that list.
Check your CDFW regulation book for other tributaries that will remain open. All of the lakes in Inyo and Mono Counties will also close on November 15th.

More than 16,000 passengers secured tickets on the Christmas season-flavored, children's story-inspired holiday passenger train.

Even with the addition of 18 more trains representing 6,500 seats over last year’s 10,000-plus capacity, a 66 percent increase, the train’s popularity continues to grow, V&T officials note.

If you are a trout fisherman, you might want to consider taking a fishing trip (or more than one) to Pyramid Lake this month to fish for Lahontan Cutthroat trout that can run up to double digits in weight.

Old timers told me, many years ago, that the two months of November and March are the best times of the year to fish at that large desert lake, north of Reno-Sparks. And, through the years, I have found that to be true, even though I have fished at Pyramid many other months of the year.

Just got back from a 1,200 mile trip up the coast and into Oregon to fish and enjoy family. Renee and I enjoyed all the rivers on the way. The Russian, Klamath, Eel, Illinois, Chetco, Smith and the Rogue. Caught a few fish and had a great time.

While in Gold beach Oregon we received over 2 inches of rain in one afternoon.

The yellow jackets and the bears are out in full force getting ready for winter hibernation. Both fierce and are looking for all the food they can get. But we have to remember that feeding bears is against the law.
