Champagne Family Dentistry hosts Story Time

Local dentistry, Champagne Family Dental, takes a step to improve children’s oral health in the Truckee Meadows by hosting Story Time at Barnes & Noble Booksellers in Reno, Saturday, Jan. 24. at Meadow Wood Court, 5555 S. Virginia St.

The story event is designed to educate children on oral health through stories and playful activities. The reading begins at 1 p.m. The event is free.

Lake Tahoe Brewing Co., in downtown Carson City to open soon

Carson City's newest downtown brewery and restaurant, Lake Tahoe Brewing Co., is set to open soon. After a huge remodel, the Hop and Mae Adams restaurant site will open under the direction of owner and founder Michael Candelario.

On Wednesday a select number of people were allowed to see what is ultimately coming to Carson City. While a firm date has not been set, an opening is forthcoming within the coming weeks, perhaps even days.

Jet Blue to provide service from Reno-Tahoe to New York City beginning May 28

Jet Blue Airways announced Tuesday that it would offer nonstop service between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport beginning May 28, 2015. Reno-Tahoe will be the airline's 89th destination and is among a number of new JetBlue routes in the West.

Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through Jan. 18

Here is the Carson City area road report for the week of Jan. 12-18, 2015. On Tuesday, Jan. 13, the northbound left turn lane at Carson Street and Hot Springs Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

There will be restricted lanes on East Fifth Street between Linda Kay Court and Parkland Avenue from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Two-way traffic will be maintained. Please use caution.

Venturing on Sierra ice to fish or skate

According to Webster’s Dictionary, “Ice is water frozen solid by cold.” Well, with the arrival of winter weather in this area, we certainly have plenty of water frozen on our creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs.

A word of warning, however: None of the ice in Western Nevada is considered safe at any time in winter. If you want to ice fish, you're going to have to head into the Sierra or areas of Eastern Nevada where some lakes freeze over and are thick enough to hold people.

More trails, terrain open at Northstar, halfpipe slated for Friday

Lake Tahoe's Northstar California will open this winter’s first halfpipe to skiers and riders this coming Friday, Jan. 9, resort officials announced Tuesday.

Located on Pipeline trail and accessible via Vista Express, the halfpipe is a popular and highly-anticipated feature among Northstar’s terrain park users. Its addition allows for a contiguous, uninterrupted terrain park descent from the top of Pinball Park, which currently offers guests access to 46 features, into the Pipeline Park, which hosts the halfpipe.

The new year 'critical' for region's water supply

The snowpack in the Sierra continues to reflect the drought conditions that have stressed Northern Nevada in recent years.
For the third year in a row, the Truckee Meadows and other nearby basins on the Eastern Sierra have only about two thirds of the normal snowpack. Or, put another way: we’ve lost a year’s worth of precipitation in this most recent drought cycle.

2 Elementary kids capture the holiday spirit

Kayden went up to her mom one afternoon in October and stated, "Mom, I want to go the orphanage and donate presents and sing for all the kids." Robyn replied "I don't think that's how it works anymore, a lot of the kids live in foster homes, but I can find out about adopting a family." "That sounds great!" And so she did.

Woman jailed on felony possession of marijuana after Christmas Day traffic stop

A Truckee, Calif., woman was arrested Dec. 25, 2:38 p.m. in the 1700 block of North Carson Street on felony suspicion of possession of marijuana after officers found approximately 4.5 ounces in her vehicle following a traffic stop, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Reno Tahoe Helicopters Receives Air Carrier Certification

Reno Tahoe Helicopters / Heliminden LLC received its Air Carrier Certificate from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Nov. 25, 2014. This certification allows the company to offer charter services for air taxi in the United States, and serving the Northern California/Reno area, including tours to Napa, Calistoga, and Sonoma.

“We are the only operators in the area to have the Air Carrier Certification. We are proud to be able to offer our clients the expanded services of air taxi,” said Claudio Bellotto, Chief Pilot and Owner of Reno Tahoe Helicopters/HeliMinden.

Chase International agent to appear on HGTV’s House Hunters

A new South Lake Tahoe couple brought along a little something special on their recent home search — a camera crew, an HGTV House Hunters crew, to be exact.

Travis and Morgan Fields were working with Chase International’s Angie Clark last spring when the Oakland couple decided to contact the popular show. Angie, already a huge fan, was immediately on board. The trio completed questionnaires and sent in audition tapes.

NDOT says its ready for winter snow season

With the potential for the first significant storm of the season due to arrive Sunday into Monday, the winter season in Northern Nevada is about to kick in. Nevada Department of Transportation says it has finished its annual winter preparations, employing new technology and more than 80 snow plows and other equipment to help keep roads clear through the upcoming season.

Late Fall Day at Treadway Park in Carson City

The nights are chilly but the fall days still warm up nicely (usually), In Carson City. Treadway Park is a quiet small gem of a park next to the Carson Tahoe Care Center (The "old" hospital ) and Carson Behavioral Health.

The park is close to where William Street ends west at Minnesota. Easy parking access is at 775 Fleischmann Street next to the hospital. Treadway Park is named in honor of a pioneer Carson City man, Aaron Treadway, who had a 10-acre ranch at this location.

Hello fellow anglers. Now that our evening daylight is getting shorter, take advantage of as much fishing time you can get. On the bright side, on Dec. 22, the days will start getting longer by 1 minute each day. Also remember that you have until Saturday, Nov. 15, to get in your last bit of fishing on the California rivers and streams as the season will come to a close.

There will be some areas on the Carson River and the American River that is open to fishing all year long with restrictions of zero limit and a barbless hook. Check your regulations for these areas.

With the first winter storm of the fall arriving in the Sierra Friday and Saturday, the Nevada Department of Transportation and Nevada Highway Patrol offers these winter driving tips to help motorists drive more throughout the upcoming season.

On average, more than 2,000 crashes occur statewide every year due to unsafe driving in snow, ice and other wet conditions, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to maintain a lane and overcorrecting.

The Reno Philharmonic Association’s Free Family Concert and Youth Orchestra Fall Showcase puts the organization’s music education program center stage Nov. 15 at the Pioneer Center for the Performing Arts, Reno, Nev. The concerts are part of the Reno Philharmonics’ education and outreach initiatives, providing music education, enrichment and exposure to thousands of Washoe County and greater Truckee Meadows school children.
