Firefighting Hotshot crew to host 9th annual Silver State Vertical Drop Ski Competition

The Silver State Vertical Drop is an annual ski competition and community fundraising event put on by the Silver State Hotshots, a Carson City-based wildfire suppression crew. Justin Cutler, the current captain of the Silver State Hotshots, began the event in 2008 and it has taken place each year, this year being the 9th consecutive.

Caltrans: Highway 50 is not opening Sunday after mudslide closed road at Ice House

UPDATE SUNDAY 3:40PM: California Highway 88 westbound is bumper to bumper traffic. Motorists can expect delays from Kirkwood westbound. The highway is one of the only ones moving in both directions due to Highway 50 being closed, and major delays westbound I-80 from the state line to Truckee due to mud slide removal.

South Lake Tahoe firefighters rescued two dogs that fell through the ice along the Truckee River on Saturday. The incident happened near Venice Drive where the river meets the lake after the fire agency received a dispatch call about two dogs in the icy water.

Fill it Up: Lake Tahoe now 1.67 feet above natural rim, highest January since 2013

Lake Tahoe is filling up and is currently holding the most water for the month of January since 2013, according to BLM and USGS hydrology reports.

UPDATE 6:08AM TUESDAY: Highway 395 through the Carson Valley remains closed southbound, but open northbound, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation, NDOT. Southbound detour at Jacks Valley Valley Road to Foothill.

UPDATE 5:15PM: Traffic continues to crawl along Jacks Valley Road and Foothill due to the Highway 395 closure.
One lane of Highway 395 northbound has reopened at Stephanie. Southbound is still closed.

UPDATE 2:45PM: Both the northbound and southbound lanes on Highway 395 are closed due to flooding along the Cradlebaugh Bridge in Carson Valley, said Carson City Undersheriff Steve Albertsen. Southbound Highway 395 motorists are advised to take Jacks Valley Road and connect to Foothill Road. The Nevada Highway Patrol is turning people around at the RV park, he said.

What Works: Preparedness vs. Complacency

The recent flooding was devastating for some, inconvenient for others. What was the difference? Of course, flood zoning played a large role. But even those in flood areas were better off because of a single mindset, preparedness.
I was personally impressed by the local response.

Carson City forecast: Flood Watch issued, 6 to 12 inches of rain in Sierra possible this weekend

With the current storm still producing rain around the Carson City region, forecasters have turned their attention to the next system that will arrive this weekend bringing warmer conditions, rising snow levels and the potential for flooding.
