March 26: Squaw Creek Reservoir north of Gerlach in Washoe County: 1,506 rainbow trout: 10.0 inches in length.
March 26: Truckee River in Washoe County: 7,002 rainbows: 8.6 inches.
March 28: West Walker River in Lyon County: 10,383 brown trout fingerlings: 1.9 inches.
March 28: Wilson Common in Washoe Valley: 502 rainbows: 10.0 inches.
March 28: Davis Creek Pond in Washoe Valley: 502 rainbows: 10.0 inches.

Outdoors with Don Q: Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing in March

If you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.
Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that run into “Double Digits” in weight.
The lake is the terminus of the Truckee River which begins at Lake Tahoe.
Pyramid Lake is approximately 15 miles long, 11 miles wide and measures about 350 feet deep at its deepest point.

Lake Tahoe agency names Best in The Basin awards for projects and contractors

Recognized for stewardship and care taken in the building and construction of developments around Lake Tahoe, the 22nd annual Best in the Basin awards were announced Tuesday by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency.
The TRPA, which sets policy for development around Lake Tahoe, will recognize the winners, listed below, during the 2011 Best in the Basin awards presentation during the meeting of its Governing Board on Wednesday, Feb. 22 in Stateline. Go here for the agenda.

Reno-Tahoe International Airport to undergo $40 million in renovations

Beginning today the Reno-Tahoe International Airport will be undergoing $40 million in renovations, including a ticket lobby with a Lake Tahoe theme. The Gateway Project, which will bring about 275 jobs now through April 2013, features an upgrade to the baggage claim area, creating a first floor single security checkpoint, plus new retail and places to eat.

Golf course near South Lake Tahoe battle heats up with lawsuit, vandalism

UPDATED 8:35AM: California State Parks is investigating vandalism that happened over the weekend on Washoe Meadows State Park land near the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. Electronic equipment and river monitoring devices were damaged or destroyed. Two logs were found to have graffiti sprayed on them, saying "Stop Golf" and "Save the Park."

Lake Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to evaluate Homewood EIR plan

In a news release, the Tahoe Regional Planning agency announced changes to the two-day agenda of Governing Board meetings taking place on Wednesday, Dec. 14 at Granlibakken, and Thursday, Dec. 15 at the TRPA offices.

The Dec. 14 agenda remains unchanged and includes a proposed adoption of the Final Environmental Impact Review and Environmental Impact Statement for Homewood Mountain Resort on the west shore of Lake Tahoe.

Outdoors with Don Q: Pyramid Lake trout season opens Oct. 1

Pyramid Lake, located about 30 miles north of Sparks, will open on Saturday, Oct. 1 to fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout.
That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 1 to Sept. 30.

The Nevada Department of Wildlife (www.ndow.org) reports: The road is open, but there is still a LOT of snow around the lake. The lake is about 80% ice covered with some fishable water. Unfortunately, there is enough snow on the ice, you can't tell what is safe and what isn't. With this week's warm temps and some wind, next weekend may be a different story.
