Several Agencies to Staff DUI Holiday Checkpoint at Lake Tahoe on Monday

On Monday, July 4, several Northern Nevada law enforcement officers will team up for a sobriety checkpoint at Lake Tahoe. Personnel from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Sparks Police Department, Washoe County School District Police Department and the Nevada Highway Patrol will be staffing the checkpoint on July 4, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen in a news release.

Proposed Legislation Would Ban All Cell Phone Use for Drivers

Democratic legislators this year are again lining up bills that would outlaw texting while driving and, in some cases, ban hand-held phone use while driving.
They’re continuing efforts in the 2009 session from Sen. Shirley Breeden, D-Henderson, whose text-banning bill died in committee. She’s sponsoring a similar bill this year.

Nevada Highway Patrol makes 14 DUI arrests overnight

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports this morning that 14 alcohol-related arrests were made overnight, including two DUIs in Carson City.

In a 12-hour period between 7 p.m. Friday through 7 this morning, NHP troopers arrested the motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, said Trooper Chuck Allen.

NHP: 47 wrecks in six hours and growing

Nevada Highway Patrol troopers have been busy today responding to four dozen motor vehicle crashes on area roads and highways.

Some 47 accidents were reported between 6 a.m. and noon today throughout the Northern Nevada region, said Trooper Chuck Allen.

The accidents happened as a result of falling snow, slippery roadways and motorists traveling too fast for the roadway conditions, Allen said in a press statement. Gov. Gibbons Announces Retirement Of State Public Safety Chief

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons today announced the retirement of Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Jerry Hafen. Hafen is a life-long resident of Clark County and was appointed to the top job at the agency in early 2008.
He will step down Dec. 31.
“Jerry Hafen has proven to be a respected leader in law enforcement in Nevada and I am proud of his accomplishments as DPS Director,” Gibbons said. “Jerry has proven time and again that the safety of the citizens of Nevada is his top priority.

NHP reports DUI stats over Nevada Day holiday weekend; Sobriety checkpoint set for Saturday in Carson City

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports arresting nine people in Carson City over the three-day holiday weekend, eight of the arrests being for motorists driving under the influence and one was arrested on a warrant.

The figures are from Friday to Sunday. The best news to report is that the Northern Nevada area didn't have a single highway fatality crash this year over the Nevada Day weekend, said NHP Trooper Chuck Allen.

DUI checkpoint results in five arrests

Law enforcement personnel from 4 northern Nevada agencies conducted a DUI checkpoint on State Road 445 (Pyramid Highway) near Egyptian Drive in Spanish Springs yesterday afternoon. Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, police officers from the Reno and Sparks Police Departments and troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol participated in the “Joining Forces” holiday weekend administrative roadblock from 1:30 pm – 7:30 pm. During the 6-hour event, 1008 vehicles were screened with 22 of those directed into the secondary screening area.
