The summer season for the V&T Railroad opened Saturday with nearly 190 excited people boarding three historic passenger cars lined up behind the V&T No. 18 steam engine.

Carson City nonprofit Food for Thought has teamed up with the Carson Nugget to make sure needy children stay fed this summer.

“We were in need of a kitchen to make lunches for children in our program and the Carson Nugget stepped right up to the plate and agreed to allow us to use their kitchen facilities,” said Stephanie Gardner, executive director, Food for Thought. “This is great because it will allow us to continue this much needed program during the summer months when school is not in session.”

Memorial Day Weekend (May 24-27) is coming up, just around the corner, the weather is forecast for gorgeous conditions, and for countless folks in this general area, it will be their first big outdoor adventure of 2013.

So, where to go on that weekend? Well, be advised that no matter where you go (unless it is to some God forsaken location in the middle of nowhere), you can expect to encounter big crowds of people also wanting to enjoy an outdoor outing for the holiday.

So, be prepared for lots of company wherever you go or whatever you do.

Are you looking for something fun to do on Memorial Day? Come on down to the Carson Nugget in Carson City and participate in the first of four Red, White, & Blue Summer BBQs.

On Monday, Memorial Day, from 1-7 p.m. the Carson Nugget will host the first BBQ of the season. This event is free to the public and offers fun for all ages. 

Thirteen blocks. Dozens of restaurants. Multiple live bands. One Day. Foodies prepare yourself because the best of Carson City's culinary side comes alive Saturday, June 15 at the 20th annual Taste of DownTown, the capital city's premiere downtown summer event.

A museum to display military aircraft and vehicles is planned at the Carson City Airport, with a preview slated for summer and construction to start in the fall.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will step up DUI patrols for the coming Memorial Day weekend beginning Friday through May 27.

For the holiday period stretch there will be heavy saturation patrols for DUI drivers, a DUI checkpoint, and enforcing underage drinking laws. The purpose of these activities is to ensure that drivers in Carson City are safe and sober going into and during the holiday weekend, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Darrin Sloan.

With sunny skies, a gentle breeze and plenty of children and their parents, the 10th annual Cops and Kids open house, hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office on Saturday, lived up to its reputation as the safest party on the street.

More than 2,000 attended the four-hour event, which featured games, prizes and demonstrations by Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers and personnel. The event is designed for children and their parents to get quality meet-and-greet face time with law enforcement personnel.

Headed to Lake Tahoe or the backcountry for the weekend? Well, bears and other critters are headed out into the wild too after spending winter and spring inside their own nooks and crannies. And, like you, they're up for some exploring.

Oh, and they're hungry, too.

The Carson City downtown action group 20/20, which is planning several activities throughout summer and beyond, is inviting the public to its meeting tonight, Thursday, at Firkin and Fox, 310 S Carson Street, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The safest party on the streets of Carson City is set for Saturday, May 18.

The Carson City Sheriff's Office presents its 10th annual Cops and Kids open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This free community event features food, music, games, activities and presentations.

As part of its Dialogue 2013 series, the Chamber is reaching out to locals who live, work, play, and learn in Carson City via SurveyMonkey.

After meeting with the Leadership Institute Class of 2013, students at WNC, Chamber members, teenagers at the Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada and the senior at the Senior Center, the Chamber is expanding its reach to allow residents to respond to two simple questions: Why do we live here and what do we see that our city will be like by the year 2020.

CARSON CITY — For the fourth consecutive year, Western Nevada College will graduate its largest class in history. The class of 2013 is 505 students strong, with 530 degrees and certificates being issued.

Four students will receive Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and three students will graduate with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College. The graduates span 60 years, from the youngest at age 17 and the eldest at 77.

The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada will hold a kickoff Carson City summer party on Sunday, May 19, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The free community barbecue will feature a Bounce house, games and activities, parent membership orientations and discounted memberships.

The Reno Jazz Orchestra, will present a jazz and gospel version of Porgy and Bess with the Pat Esters Gospel Choir. This will be an evening to remember! Set on the shores of Sand Harbor, this pictureqsue setting will be an ideal backdrop for the 17 piece Jazz Orchestra plus The Pat Esters Gospel Choir.

The Carson City CrossFit Future Athlete Sport Conditioning Summer Camp will run June 10 through July 12.

This will be for all youth athletes playing football, soccer, basketball, baseball, track, cross country, tennis, or want to get in to the Sport of Fitness, CrossFit.

The program will encompass strength training, sport conditioning, kettlebells, tire flips, plyometrics, and sprints. This program is designed for the young athlete to not only get stronger but get better conditioning in during the summer months.

The 21st Annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive will take place this year on the Saturday before Mother's Day, May 11th. This is the largest one day food drive in the nation, and since it's start has collected over 1.2 billion pounds of food.

All the food collected goes to local organizations that help feed the hungry in our community. This year Advocates to End Domestic Violence, F.I.S.H., and the Ron Wood Center will be participating.

The Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® will be hosting the Alyce McCracken Scramble for Scholarships on Friday, June 21 at the Eagle Valley Golf Course in Carson City.

This annual golf tournament is played in honor of REALTOR® Alyce McCracken, a resident of Northern Nevada who had a passion for continuing education and training. Proceeds from the tournament benefit local high schools in the communities served by the Sierra Nevada Association of REALTORS® including the counties of Carson, Douglas, Churchill, and parts of Lyon.
