Thunderstorms and Red Flag Warning for Northern Nevada

The National Weather Service in Reno reports a Red Flag Warning within Carson City and other areas of Northern and Western Nevada. This warning indicates that critical fire conditions may occur because of the harsh lightening that will follow up during tonight’s weather, along with light showers. The affected area for this kind of danger is within the west central portion of the Nevada Basin and range. The unstable weather is expected to last through Saturday.

Results from Legends of the West 2012 Bike and Car Fest

Legends of the West Bike and Car Fest 2012 has announced the winners of its Show and Shine, held on June 30 in downtown Carson City. A great day was had by all – the weather cooperated – and people strolled among the beautiful vehicles and chatted with the owners and restorers. The CCSO 9th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge attracted a dedicated crowd who watched all the competitors and cheered their favorites on to victory in all the competitions – Continuous Ride, Slow Ride, Team Ride, and the spectacular Last Man Standing.

Fire restrictions begin Monday in the Lake Tahoe Basin

Fire restrictions will go into effect in the Lake Tahoe Basin on Monday July 9. A Forest Order has been issued to provide for public safety through the end of the official 2012 fire season.
Campfires, including charcoal barbecues, are prohibited except in exempted recreation sites. Smoking on National Forest land is prohibited, except within an enclosed vehicle or building, or within an exempted recreation site. Fire restrictions are intended to reduce the possibility of human-caused wildfires over the summer season. (see PDF below.)

In many ways, Thursday evening was an ordinary monthly mixer for the Dayton Chamber of Commerce, with members and guests partaking of food and drink, and employees of the host business talking about their contribution to the local economy.

But the host business on this occasion was the Love Ranch brothel, and the "employees" included several provocatively dressed working girls, and the business they were talking about was sex.

Community Goes to Bat for WNC Softball Player

If she didn't know it before, Melanie Pfeiffer learned on Sunday, June 12, just how warm and caring her community really is.

More than 140 participants were part of a 5-K run/walk/jog fundraiser on behalf of the Western Nevada College softball player who is battling melanoma skin cancer. The event raised $5,000 for Pfeiffer, who is without medical insurance. El Charro Avitia Restaurant in Carson City hosted the race venue and fed the participants afterward.

New adventure events complement Lake Tahoe South summer line-up

Lake Tahoe South steps into high endurance overdrive this summer with two new outdoor adventure events that celebrate speed, agility and skill — one with feet to the ground and the other rubber to the road.

Sierra Recon, a high-energy, multi-distance obstacle race screaming the amped premise, “Everyone loves carnage” is set for July 14 at Sierra-at-Tahoe Resort, while the Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous celebrates the freedom of the wide open road, Aug. 23-26.

Oregon students "Pay It Forward" in Carson City

CARSON CITY — It’s not a typical summer road trip filled with beach visits and tourist traps. Instead it’s a community service road trip filled with good deeds.

Twenty‐two students from Portland, Oregon area High Schools will visit Carson City as part of a community service road trip called the Pay It Forward (PIF) Tour. The tour allows students the opportunity to serve, lead and learn. In just five days, these students will travel to and serve in four different communities; Carson City is their last stop.

River rafting begins along the Truckee River at Lake Tahoe

The dam gates are open and the river is flowing, and rafting along North Lake Tahoe’s scenic Truckee River is now open.

Tahoe City-based Truckee River Rafting opened Tuesday, June 12. Truckee River Raft Company, also in Tahoe City, opens today, Thursday, June 14. The companies offer self-guided, five-mile floats down the Truckee River.

Don Q's Fishing Report for week of June 6

ALMANOR LAKE, CALIF:
Shasta Cascade Wonderland Association (530-365-7500) (www.shastacascade.com) reports:
Fish are active and conditions are perfect.
The surface temps are averaging 59 degrees, and climbing to 61.5 degrees by midday. Clarity is very good, to 13.5 ft. Still cool enough on the surface to still be holding some nice Kings on the west side. 2 salmon were caught trolling Almanor West up to 2 lbs.
Trolling has been more effective than bait fishing deep holes and should remain that way until surface temps really spike. Like above 65 degrees.

Heavenly resort at Lake Tahoe opens Friday for summer season

On Friday, June 8, 2012, Heavenly Mountain Resort will begin operating the Heavenly Gondola seven days a week from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for sightseeing, hiking and dining. The Tamarack Express Chairlift will also operate, accessing miles of hiking trails with the best views of Lake Tahoe.

Pilot Lake Tahoe bus program to link Incline Village and Sand Harbor

A new bus service at Lake Tahoe that will run from Incline Village to Sand Harbor Beach State Recreation Area will begin this month.
A collaboration of the Tahoe Transportation District, the Nevada Division of State Parks, Nevada Department of Transportation, Nevada Highway Patrol and Washoe County School District will inaugurate the East Shore Express, a pilot Park and Ride bus service beginning June 15 and will run to Sept. 3, 2012.

Five Southern Nevada Residents Seek Board Of Education Seat In District 3

CARSON CITY – Five candidates, including one current board member, are seeking the State Board of Education seat in District 3 in Clark County in the June 12 primary.

The top two vote-getters in the nonpartisan race will move on to the general election in November. The board, reconstituted in the 2011 legislative session, has four elected seats. Another three will be appointed by Gov. Brian Sandoval and legislative leadership.

Food For Thought offers summer lunch program

Food for Thought announces the sponsorship of the Summer Food Service Program at Terrace Park in Carson City. Terrace Park is adjacent to Empire Elementary School. Lunch will be served to all children aged 2 to 18 who come to the park free of charge. Acceptance and participation requirements for the program and all activities are the same for all regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, gender or disability, and there be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

Music series High Notes kicks off in June at North Lake Tahoe

North Lake Tahoe takes its music outdoors with a variety of live concerts, festivals and headliner events – all part of the destination’s High Notes: North Lake Tahoe Summerlong Music series, running June through September. The lake’s live music campaign also has a designated website that covers all the free events and ticketed performances.
