Carson City fire restrictions in place

With a heat wave developing throughout the region, the Carson City Fire Department has now implemented fire restrictions on city and privately owned lands within Carson City, according to the city's website.

Fire restrictions for Western Nevada begin today

Tinder-dry vegetation, lingering drought conditions, increasing daytime temperatures and several human-caused fires have prompted the Bureau of Land Management Carson City District Office, the Carson and Bridgeport Ranger Districts of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Nevada Division of Forestry’s to announce the implementation of fire restrictions today, Friday, June 28.

Children's Museum in Carson City offers summer science camp

Is your child a budding young scientist who enjoys experiments? The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City is offering a Science Camp this summer with the inquisitive in mind.

Geared for children ages 4 and up, this is an ideal camp for those kids seeking answers as to the how, what and why things work in their surrounding environment.

BLM, community square off over Fish Springs wild horse issue

Local residents gathered at the Bureau of Land Management field office in Carson City Wednesday, amid concerns over pending action that may include removal of wild horses.

The area known as Fish Springs, three miles southeast of Gardnerville, is home to scattered bands of wild horses that have become part of the landscape to property owners over the past 20 years. The situation came to a head recently, when residents provided supplemental watering tanks for the horses.

The next Red, White and Blue Barbecue at the Carson Nugget in Carson City will feature a Men and Women’s Swimsuit Contest, today, Saturday, during a day-long barbecue that runs from 1 to 7 p.m. The contest will be held from 2-5:30 p.m. with the finals being held inside the casino at the Show Bar beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Carson City Boy Scouts to collect food for FISH on Saturday at Wal-Mart

Boy Scout Troop 341 of Carson City will hold a Food Drive for Friends in Service Helping, otherwise known as FISH, on Saturday, June 29 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wal-Mart locations on Retail Drive and Topsy Lane.

Canned foods and non-perishable items are welcome. Items collected will help feed children and families during the summer.

Mills Park in Carson City is alive today with carnival activities and more for a good cause — to help change lives for hungry children in our community — one meal at a time.

Food for Thought is a Carson City nonprofit whose mission is to provide nutritious meals to chronically hungry school children in our community.

NDOW announces no limit on trout at Wildhorse Reservoir

Low water levels caused by persistent drought conditions and irrigation demands at Wildhorse Reservoir north of Elko have prompted the Nevada Department of Wildlife to remove the limit on trout, allowing anglers unlimited take.

This emergency regulation is now in effect and will run through Oct. 15, 2013.

NDOW is concerned that with anticipated low reservoir water levels during the hot summer months the oxygen levels in the water could become low enough to cause a large number of the trout to die.

On track with summer vacation, the historic V&T Railroad now offers adventure-seeking children 12 and under the chance to climb aboard and ride a diesel train for free every Friday through summer.

Senior Mingle at The Lodge set for Thursday

Carson City seniors are invited to celebrate the beginning of summer at a tropical themed Senior Mingle on Thursday, June 20 at The Lodge Assisted Living Community.

Area seniors can “GoGoNuts” while enjoying the party atmosphere in the Lodge’s Ballroom and Dining Hall from 2 to 4pm. Party goers will enjoy music by the Music Man Larry Elliot, tropical food, and fun games. Plus everyone is entered into a raffle for great prizes.

The next barbecue will be held on the Carson Street lot, across from the casino on Saturday, June 29th from 1:00 until 7:00 PM. This will be the second in a series of four “Red, White & Blue Barbecues” this summer. The barbecues are FREE and offer fun for all ages.

Western Nevada College Summer Art Exhibition Features Space Photography

A fascinating and colorful exhibition of space photography is on display in Carson City at the Western Nevada College Main Art Gallery through August. 23. The collection contains several dozen large photographs of Earth’s moon, planets in our Solar System and their moons, and colorful nebulae.

A photograph of the Observatory under the night sky, taken over a 40-minute duration, offers a fascinating look at the movement of stars in the night sky.

Lake Tahoe summer shuttle service to Sand Harbor begins June 15

The East Shore Express, a park and ride bus that runs from Incline Village to Sand Harbor, opens for a second season for Lake Tahoe visitors and locals.

Buses will operate Saturdays and Sundays beginning the weekends of June 15-16 and June 22-23 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Daily operations begin Saturday, June 29 through Sept. 2 with service from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and run every 20 minutes on weekends. Hours of operation on the Fourth of July are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Carson City Library summer reading program kicks off with Kiwanis breakfast

The Kiwanis Club of Carson City helped the Carson City Library host the Summer Reading Program Pancake Breakfast Kick-Off on Saturday.

Carson City Friends of the Library sale Friday, Kiwanis pancake breakfast Saturday

Summer beach reading favorites and a Saturday morning Kiwanis Club pancake breakfast are on tap beginning today at the Friends of the Carson City Library's Bargain Blast Book Bonanza.

All adult hardcover books will be 50 cents each and paperbacks will be 25 cents. The sale will be at the Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop Street, today, Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Carson City pool to reopen for Sunday family swim

The Carson City outdoor pool will be open for families to cool off on Sunday afternoons through summer. The pool had been closed Sundays for several seasons because of budget cuts.

Sunday's will have special rates and special themes to attract the entire family. With the many young families in Carson City, parks and recreation has decided to reopen the pool. Hours will be from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m.

WNC Summer Classes Begin June 10 in Carson City, Fallon

It’s not too late to register for summer classes at Western Nevada College in Carson City and Fallon. The summer term begins Monday, June 10, and offers students the opportunity to earn full credit on a condensed schedule, or get up to speed on college level skills.
