Plenty of activities around Carson City are returning for all to enjoy throughout the summer. From hiking and biking trails and campgrounds, to several outdoor recreational activities, there are many ways to get outside and enjoy the warm weather.

Nevada 4-H offering at-home and virtual summer activities

In addition to the many adaptations local 4-H programs have made in Nevada communities the last couple of months amid COVID-19 to keep 4-H youth engaged, the Nevada 4-H Youth Development Program has developed a variety of activities to engage 4-H youth throughout the state during the summer months.

Expected late snowmelt pushes Carson City Off-Road cycling event to last weekend in June

CARSON CITY — In order to deliver on the objective of giving mountain bikers a true backcountry experience on world-class singletrack that challenges riders as much as it inspires and rewards, and allowing for extra snowmelt time in a potentially record-setting Sierra Nevada winter, Epic Rides announced a date change of the Carson City Off-Road from June 14-16 to June 28-30.

The Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.

Heavenly Epic Discovery plan at Tahoe gets final OK, construction to begin this summer

The final hurdle in a process that began in 2013 was cleared Thursday for Heavenly Mountain Resort at Lake Tahoe with final approval by the Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board for the Epic Discovery Project, a year-round outdoor recreation plan to straddle the resort's Nevada and California border.

Heavenly Mountain Resort has sought approval for expansions to its on-mountain summer activities, as part of Vail Resorts’ Epic Discovery program. The Epic Discovery plan was submitted in July 2013 and has undergone a comprehensive environmental and public review.

Who Stole Winter? Lake Tahoe ski resort stalwart talks about drought impact

You have to adapt to changes in life or you won't survive, a Lake Tahoe area ski resort management executive and Tahoe South stalwart John Rice told business leaders this week at a Lake Tahoe Community College forum.

"Change is happening, Clearly we're in a drought, whether it's here for short term, or long term, time will tell," said Rice, the vice president and general manager of Sierra-at-Tahoe, long considered one of the nation's best managed, economically and environmentally efficient ski resorts. "The ski industry has the most to lose in a drought."

Heavenly's Epic Discovery Project closer to reality; Final environmental report ready

The final environmental impact report on Heavenly Mountain Resort's Epic Discovery Project has been completed and is now ready for public review. The new project, located at Heavenly Mountain Resort, will expand their summer activities to include more canopy tours, hiking and biking trails as well as interpretive activities.

More trails, terrain open at Northstar, halfpipe slated for Friday

Lake Tahoe's Northstar California will open this winter’s first halfpipe to skiers and riders this coming Friday, Jan. 9, resort officials announced Tuesday.

Located on Pipeline trail and accessible via Vista Express, the halfpipe is a popular and highly-anticipated feature among Northstar’s terrain park users. Its addition allows for a contiguous, uninterrupted terrain park descent from the top of Pinball Park, which currently offers guests access to 46 features, into the Pipeline Park, which hosts the halfpipe.

Comment period open for Heavenly Epic Discovery Project at Lake Tahoe

Public comments are being accepted on a draft environmental impact report for Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Epic Discovery Project until Tuesday, October 21, 2014.

The U.S. Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and Lahontan Regional Water Quality Control Board directed the preparation of a joint environmental document for the project, located at the Heavenly Mountain Resort in El Dorado, Alpine and Douglas counties.

WNC College for Kids offers two weeks of youth day camps

Two weeklong sessions are available. Choose one class for one week at $56 per class; choose two morning or afternoon classes for one week for $90, or choose both daily sessions for $120 per week.

WNC summer term begins June 9

Many college students seek to enroll in summer classes to stay on track for graduation, or learn a new skill. At Western Nevada College students can choose from a variety of classes in the upcoming eight-week summer term. Classes begin June 9 and continue through August 2, unless otherwise noted.

More than 40 courses are scheduled for the summer, including writing, communications, art, music, theater, accounting math, and more. Over a dozen online classes are also available, providing students the flexibility of earning college credit while enjoying their summer activities.

Vendors sought for the Carson Nugget’s Summer Series 'Red, White and Blue Barbecues'

New vendors are currently being sought to participate in the “Red, White and Blue Barbecue” at the Carson Nugget in Carson City.

The next barbecue will be held on the Carson Street lot, across from the casino on Saturday, June 29th from 1:00 until 7:00 PM. This will be the second in a series of four “Red, White & Blue Barbecues” this summer. The barbecues are FREE and offer fun for all ages.

Carson City steps up saturation patrol for DUI drivers over Memorial Day weekend

The Carson City Sheriff's Office will step up DUI patrols for the coming Memorial Day weekend beginning Friday through May 27.

For the holiday period stretch there will be heavy saturation patrols for DUI drivers, a DUI checkpoint, and enforcing underage drinking laws. The purpose of these activities is to ensure that drivers in Carson City are safe and sober going into and during the holiday weekend, said Carson City Sheriff's Office Sgt. Darrin Sloan.

Getting a Tune-Up

Regular readers of BikeCarson.com may have noticed that there have been far fewer postings lately. I suppose an explanation is warranted, because I don’t want you to think that I have lost interest in cycling, as this is not the case. I haven’t been riding my bike though, and it’s awfully hard to write about something I’m not actively engaged in.  After years of tuning-up my bike, it was time to tune-up my body.

Early season Lake Tahoe snow prompts Heavenly, Northstar and Kirkwood to open early

Powerful early-season storms combined with the area’s largest and most advanced snowmaking operations have allowed Vail Resorts’ Lake Tahoe mountains – Heavenly Mountain Resort, Northstar California Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort – to open early with 111 acres. Heavenly and Northstar will open on Wednesday, Nov. 14 with a combined seven lifts and eight trails, totaling 51 acres.

Cub Scout Pack 837 1st annual Raingutter Regatta

AAAARRGGHH Me Mateys! The Cub Scouts of Pack 837 were ready to sail the seas with their balsa wood boats for the first annual Raingutter Regatta on Saturday, April 28th, 2012. A Raingutter Regatta is where a Cub Scout blows a boat he made down a “track” which is a rain gutter filled with water. Our Captain (Cubmaster) Debra Gibbons officiated over the heats. Yet, in the end, there were no winners or losers. This was a lesson in sportsmanship, teamwork, and good manners.

Lake Tahoe Adventure Motorcycle Ride and Rendezvous dates set

The first Lake Tahoe Motorcycle Adventure Ride and Rendezvous is slated for August 23-26 on the beautiful South Shore of Lake Tahoe (Tahoe South). Heavenly owner Vail Resorts buys Northstar-at-Tahoe

Company officials announced today that a $63 million deal was struck between the Colorado-based ski giant Vail Resorts and Booth Creek Resorts, owners of Northstar-at-Tahoe.
