Submitted by editor on Fri, 01/06/2012 - 10:03amRENO, Nev. – An online graduate certificate in renewable energy that provides an opportunity to study the policies and practices in the diverse fields of renewable energy is being offered at the University of Nevada, Reno beginning in the spring 2012 semester.
“With an emphasis on renewable energy by the Governor’s Task Force on Economic Development, this should be a popular program,” Nancy LaTourrette, of the University’s College of Engineering, said. “The program provides a breadth of understanding of the different aspects of renewable energy in a traditional semester-long time frame.”
Washoe Schools Chief Heath Morrison A Finalist For 2012 Superintendent Of The Year

The American Association of School Administrators (AASA) selected Morrison and three other superintendents as the four finalists in the national program.

Costa on Wed, 12/14/2011 - 11:16amSheriff's officers, state troopers, National Guardsmen, and a plethora of other volunteers - and their charges - middle and high school students in need of a Christmas - converged at Wal-Mart at 9 p.m. Wednesday morning for the annual Holiday with a Hero event.
With 280 low-income students to help, this year's shopping spree had to be broken up into two groups - one of middle and high school students, and one of elementary school students - spread out over two days.

Carson High School teacher Erin Been's passion for fitness has made her a Healthy Schools Program Champion, a recognition awarded by Alliance for a Healthier Generation. She has worked to make CHS students and teachers make fitness more fun with programs like morning yoga classes, incorporating dance into phys-ed classes and offering after-school programs to promote nutrition and healthy cooking.

Over student objections, regents raise undergraduate tuition 8 percent

Regents and institutional leaders said the permanent tuition hike would help restore some of the multimillion-dollar budget cuts to higher education in recent years.
“States are disinvesting in higher education across the country,” UNLV President Neal Smatresk said. “That’s the direct cause of this...We’re stuck between a rock and a hard place.”

'A Tuna Christmas' at Brewery Arts Center

The PPI was founded in 1965 and since then has continuously entertained Carson City residents with a variety of shows. Over the years, the shows have been varied: drama, musicals, comedy, classical, improvisational, old favorites and avant-garde. Now, after a two year hiatus, the performance troupe is returning to the BAC.

Carson City Sheriff Kenny Furlong is warning residents to protect their property this holiday season in light of a recent increase of reported thefts committed by drug users. According to Furlong, many of these thefts are being committed by the victims' family and friends, stealing to support their drug habits.

The Carson City School Board gave tentative approval to a new vision statement for the district on Tuesday. The statement reads: “Our community empowers tomorrow's innovators, leaders and thinkers.” The statement is the product of the district's Vision and Strategic Planning Committee after gathering suggestions from community meetings over a period of months. Subcommittees will now investigate setting goals to match the vision statement and make improvements in four areas: Flexibility and choice in curriculum, parent engagement, community partnerships and student health.

The Carson Senators will meet the Reed Raiders on Saturday in Mackay Stadium to decide the Northern 4A football champion. Even though Reed is the favorite, Carson has beaten them two years in a row. The game will be televised on KNPB at 12:15 p.m. Tickets for the game will be available at the gate, $7 for adults, $5 for students.

Every years, retailers keep trying to push the Christmas shopping season earlier and earlier, and this year is no exception. Walmart will open at 10 p.m. tonight, pushing "Black Friday" into Thursday night. Kohl's and Target will open at midnight. Many Carson City merchants will also be offering Black Friday deals.

After a three-hour preliminary hearing, the judge found there was enough evidence to bring the case to trial in district court. Witness Chris Gravenstein told how he saw Trujillo drive over Shiloh Richards, 30, and described how the victim was rendered unconscious, and had tire marks on his bare chest.

School board to meet Tuesday

Several items will be on the agenda, including reports from the superintendent, a presentation regarding the American Citizen Essay Contest, a proclamation regarding National Parental Involvement Day, and a presentation of the district's new website.
Several issues about individual students and situations, including permission regarding home-schooled and charter school students to participate in athletics, will also be discussed.
Enrollment down at Nevada colleges

Of these, 2,365 are full-time students, a 19.5 percent drop from a year ago.

Celebrity Chef and Harvest Dinner to benefit The Greenhouse Project

The evening is limited to 80 guests and features six courses paired with wine, prepared by Adele’s chef and owner, Charlie Abowd and guest chef Mylan Schmidt of Coco Dolce, Carson City.
Course sponsors at $1,000 and co-sponsorships at $500 are sought to offset the cost of meal preparation and other sponsorship opportunities will be available that evening.
