Come and be 'Part of Our World!' as Wild Horse Children’s Theater presents the Northern Nevada premiere of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid, Jr.” at the Brewery Arts Center Performance Hall, 511 W. King Street in Carson City on Nov. 30, Dec. 1, 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 7 pm and Dec. 1, 2, 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 2 pm.

The Nevada Arts Council has awarded $9,148 in Jackpot Grants to nine Nevada artists and one public institution for arts and arts learning projects. Jackpot grants are awarded on a quarterly schedule and are designed to support arts projects initiated by artists, schools, nonprofit organizations and public institutions. These projects are usually “sudden opportunity events” or applications from groups new to the NAC.

There’s still time to showcase your talents, have some fun, and at the same time, help Carson City area high school graduates pay for college. Western Nevada College's Latino Student Club is seeking performers for a fund-raising event on Friday, Nov. 9, that brings students and the community together for an evening of cultural entertainment. All proceeds from the event support WNC student scholarships.

This information is in response to several recent letters to the editor that have proposed the consolidation of libraries in Carson City. Our goal is to provide our community a better understanding of the types of libraries in Carson City. It is true there are libraries who serve the public in Carson City, but Carson City Library is the only “public library.” The other libraries are not “public libraries” and here is how they differ:

The Carson Chamber Singers, a choral group of the Carson City Symphony Association, begins its 28th season with concerts in Carson City on November 2 and in Reno on November 4. Director Michael Langham will conduct the Singers in works by René Clausen, Randall Thompson, Maurice Duruflé, and Louis Vierne. The Solemn Mass by Vierne, for chorus and organ, will be accompanied by Nancy Mielke.

The Carson City concert will be Friday, Nov. 2, 7:00 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 306 W. Musser St. Admission is free, requested donation $10 at the door.

The Carson City Symphony, directed by David Bugli, will open its twenty-ninth season on Sunday, October 21, 2012, 4:00 p.m., with a concert, "Scandinavia & All That Jazz," at the Carson City Community Center's Bob Boldrick Theater, 851 E. William Street in Carson City. Featured guest soloist is Swedish pianist Carl Petersson.

Michon Mackedon, challenger to incumbent Ron Knecht for the District 9 board of regents seat, called the proposed funding model the No. 1 problem facing higher education.
“It would be absolutely devastating to Nevada,” she said during the candidate forum sponsored by the Associated Students of Western Nevada College on Friday. “It would change the landscape of rural community college delivery.”

CARSON CITY – The two candidates in the race for the state Senate District 5 seat in Henderson debated the issues today in a televised exchange, finding more agreement than division on the all important subject of education reform.

CARSON CITY – The Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce today commended Sen. Michael Roberson, R-Las Vegas, for his commitment to seek $20 million a year in funding for English language learner programs in the Clark County School District.

High school teachers and students are invited to get involved in Nevada Poetry Out Loud, the dynamic poetry program that is structured similarly to the National Spelling Bee, but focuses on literary heritage through memorization and performance of classic and contemporary poetry. Registration for The Eighth Annual Nevada Poetry Out Loud competition is open to all Nevada public, private, charter, parochial and alternative schools and home school associations through Dec. 1.

At a leadership camp during the summer, Krista Stocke participated in a Breaking Down the Walls activity with about 120 other students, mostly strangers to her.
“By the end of the day, we considered each other family,” she said. “I'm closer with them than kids I've known since kindergarten.”

The Carson City Greenhouse will offer tours of its premises on Saturday, October 6, 2012 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. At 10:30 a.m., Greenhouse manager Ray Saliga will present a workshop on propagating herbs from cuttings. The Greenhouse is located on the Carson High School campus, 1111 North Saliman Road. To reach it, turn into the high school property from Saliman Road at Robinson Street. The public is invited to attend.

Three Dayton High School students landed a birds-eye view of the sky aboard Care Flight on Saturday as part of the "Flight for a Good Cause" fundraising effort.
After a pre-flight briefing the participating students — Isabelle Villafana, Nadia Macias and Cynthia Soto — climbed aboard and soared on a Care Flight air ambulance for a first-hand look at how it functions.
The students, two juniors and a senior are enrolled in Dayton High School’s HOSA; Future Health Professionals class.

Pianist, educator, and scholar Carl Petersson will present a seminar on life and music of composer Leopold Godowsky on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, 12:00 to 1:00 p.m., at Nightingale Concert Hall in the Church Fine Arts Building at the University of Nevada,
1335 N. Virginia Street, in Reno. Petersson's lecture includes visuals and live piano performance, followed by an informal question-and-answer discussion. It is open to piano students and the general public, admission free.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency announced the winners of the Lake Spirit Awards honoring “real people making real progress protecting Lake Tahoe” at their second annual Community Appreciation Day event held on Sept. 27 at TRPA’s office.

This fall, the Lodge Assisted Living Community is sponsoring SOLEmates, a month long program to help provide new athletic shoes to kids with The Boys and Girls Club of Western Nevada. The number of children who need help in Carson City is disproportionately high when compared to other communities of its size. Too many kids don’t have life’s basic necessities; some even tape their shoes to keep them together. The goal of SOLEmates is to acquire 300 pairs of new athletic shoes to help those kids run, play and stay active.

CARSON CITY – Democratic state Senate candidate Kelli Ross said today that she is the “union” candidate in the District 18 race in Las Vegas, while Republican Scott Hammond said he will listen to but not vote in lockstep with labor in the Legislature.

For the first time in nearly a decade, the Carson City School District has increased enrollment after steadily dropping since 2003. The district reported 7,635 students showed up for school Friday — the official count day for the state of Nevada — up 41 from last year's count.

RENO – Northern Nevada state lawmakers and candidates in the November general election identified a number of public education priorities at a forum here Monday, from ending social promotion to paying the best performing teachers more to making much-needed capital improvements to older Washoe County schools.

CARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval will support some level of funding in his next budget to continue the work of implementing a statewide longitudinal data system (SLDS) to allow for the measurement of individual student performance over time.

A celebration designed to promote safe driving habits for teenagers is in the works for Carson City. State Farm is rallying communities nationwide to promote teen driver safety by hosting events such as the one on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the Carson City Farmers' Market at 3rd and Curry Street.
The program, co-sponsored by Western Nevada College, runs from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Events planned for the day will have unique elements and will generate buzz and excitement around teen driver safety.

South Tahoe High seniors Emily Barnett and Tyler Myers will travel to Russia to present their field research project, “The Effects of Fire and Forest Thinning on the Biodiversity of Understory Plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin,” at the 9th Annual International Junior Foresters’ Competition. Their project was selected by the U.S. Forest Service International Programs office in Washington DC to represent the U.S. in the upcoming competition.

CARSON CITY – State Treasurer Kate Marshall today announced that her office has joined with USAA to expand the ability of Nevada military families to save for college through the USAA 529 College Savings Plan.
