'How-to' course on running a school yearbook program offered at WNC

But this same technology offers so many choices and alternatives that the process of beginning or updating a yearbook program can appear overwhelming. "How to Advise Yearbook" is a new course offered this spring in Carson City through the Western Nevada College's Community Education department and is designed to give aspiring and novice yearbook advisers a solid grounding in the theory and application of modern yearbooking.
Youth Theatre Carson City presents 'Aladdin and His Wonderful, Magical Lamp' this weekend
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Wed, 01/09/2013 - 2:01pmYouth Theatre Carson City is excited to announce our upcoming production of "Aladdin and His Wonderful, Magical Lamp," a magical adaptation of the classic tale, Friday through Sunday Jan. 11-13 at the Carson City Community Center and Jan. 18 at Piper’s Opera House in Virginia City.
The cast and crew are comprised of over 70 local children ages 5 to 18, who play all the classic characters including Aladdin, his pet monkey Alakazam, The Princess Jasmine and her handmaidens, the evil Jammal and his sister Halima, and not just one…but 3 Genies!
Carson City schools chief among Nevada governor's Board of Education picks
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 01/07/2013 - 3:40pmCarson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes was among four non-voting members appointed Monday by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval to the State Board of Education. Two voting members were also appointed — Stavan Corbett of Clark County and Freeman Holbrook of Washoe County.
“Today’s appointments are the next steps in reforming the governance of K-12 education in our state, a process I began during the 2011 Legislative session,” Gov. Sandoval said. “Working to deliver the best education to our state’s children must be our highest priority.”
High school writing winners selected by Sierra Nevada College Winners to read alongside award-winning poets, novelists

“The level of talent was extraordinary, making it tough for the judges,” said June Saraceno, English Department chair at Sierra Nevada College, a four-year private college in Incline Village, Nev.

Set sail with a dimwitted captain at the helm, a perky activities director with a lustful itinerary and a wacky boatload of likely suspects on a murder mystery cruise that spoofs “The Love Boat.” The show pokes fun at crazy on-board activities and no-talent entertainers. In the end, someone is murdered and it’s up to the audience to guess the culprit.

An instructor is present to assist and answer questions, but no formal instruction or assignments will be given. Raku firings are scheduled when there is sufficient interest. Glazes and firing are included in tuition. Students must purchase their own clay.
Tuition: $50 month (Students must pay prior to the 1st class of each month.)

Addressing bullying and LGBT teens: A workshop for parents and community members

The workshop will be led by Christopher Daniels, who is an educator with Planned Parenthood Mar Monte. It begins at 7 p.m. at the BRIC (Business Resource Innovation Center), 108 East Proctor Street, Carson City, Nev. The public is invited to attend.
Kristina Pickering named Chief Justice at Nevada Supreme Court
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 12/31/2012 - 12:38pmLeadership at the state's highest court will change Jan. 5 when Chief Justice Michael A. Cherry ends his term and Justice Kristina Pickering begins the administrative role of Chief Justice of the Nevada Supreme Court.
Pickering will represent Nevada’s courts at the 2013 Nevada Legislature and will give the State of the Judiciary address to lawmakers early in the session. She will serve as Chief Justice until January 2014.

Sandoval Asks For Assessment Of School Security
Submitted by Nevada News Bureau on Thu, 12/20/2012 - 10:39amCARSON CITY – Gov. Brian Sandoval today said he wants an assessment of how Nevada’s public schools are doing in regards to security following the horrific shooting deaths a week ago at a Connecticut elementary school.
Sandoval made the request as chairman of the state Homeland Security Commission, which met today by teleconference. A presentation will be prepared for the next meeting of the commission.

This is a tragedy that has gained national attention and has wrenched the hearts of Carson City residents. Saturday night, December 15, as the sun sets at 6:00 p.m., members of the Carson City business community will be hosting a candlelight vigil on the sidewalk of the Nevada State Capitol building, located at 101 North Carson Street.

Carson City School District picked for federal 'Race to the Top' grant

The Carson City School District will receive a share of the $400 million grant, around and up to $10 million, to support locally developed plans to personalize and deepen student learning, directly improve student achievement and educator effectiveness, close achievement gaps, and prepare every student to succeed in college and their careers.
"This is wonderful news for Carson City's students, teachers and parents" said Nevada Sen. Harry Reid. "As someone whose life was transformed by teachers, I understand the importance of providing all Nevadans with the opportunity to receive a quality education. While I wish that other school districts in the state were also awarded this grant, I know these funds will help put Carson's students on a path towards success."
Carson School District Wins Race To Top Funding

The award will mean up to $10 million to the district. An application submitted by the Clark County School District did not receive funding.

Many of America’s largest corporations and wealthiest individuals use accounting gimmicks to shift profits made in America to offshore tax havens, where they pay little to no taxes. This tax avoidance costs the federal government $150 billion in tax revenue each year. USPIRG released new data illustrating the size of this loss with 16 dramatic ways the public could benefit from those lost funds.
