Carson City School District Superintendent Richard Stokes said Wednesday's lockdown at Carson Middle School was a direct result of a student telling a teacher he had seen two students loading a handgun. The student, who faces a criminal charge of filing a false report, confessed later to authorities that he had made the story up.

UPDATE 8:50PM: More information has been released regarding Wednesday's lockdown at Carson Middle School, which proved to be false after a 12-year-old boy confessed to cooking up a story about two students loading a black handgun in a restroom.

Shakespeare comes to the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City this June when the Proscenium Players, Inc. presents the Bard’s comedy “Taming of the Shrew.”

Directed by Jeff Fast and performed in traditional Shakespearean language and style, the play tells the story of a rich merchant who won’t allow his fair young daughter to marry until her shrewish older sister does.

Carson City nonprofit Food for Thought has teamed up with the Carson Nugget to make sure needy children stay fed this summer.

“We were in need of a kitchen to make lunches for children in our program and the Carson Nugget stepped right up to the plate and agreed to allow us to use their kitchen facilities,” said Stephanie Gardner, executive director, Food for Thought. “This is great because it will allow us to continue this much needed program during the summer months when school is not in session.”

Western Nevada College held a unique Multi-faith Baccalaureate Service on May 20 in Carson City, the first in its 41 plus years of existence.

According to religious statesman Rajan Zed, co-organizer of this Service along with Douglas Diversity Student Club of WNC; faith leaders belonging to Christian (various denominations), Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Baha’i and Native American traditions blessed the graduates with their respective prayers in this Service. Dance and music also formed part of this ceremony and a representative of non-believers also addressed the Service.

The latest legislative funding proposals for Nevada’s rural community colleges will do serious harm to the economic development work now employed through a partnership between Northern Nevada Development Authority and Western Nevada College.

Saturday’s committee vote in the Nevada Legislature would result in a General Fund cut of 11.42 percent in the budget of Western Nevada College. This comes on top of more than 27 percent in reductions over the past five years, which led to a significant loss of academic programs, faculty, staff, and services.

CARSON CITY — For the fourth consecutive year, Western Nevada College will graduate its largest class in history. The class of 2013 is 505 students strong, with 530 degrees and certificates being issued.

Four students will receive Bachelor of Technology degrees in construction management, and three students will graduate with bachelor’s degrees as part of WNC’s teacher preparation partnership with Nevada State College. The graduates span 60 years, from the youngest at age 17 and the eldest at 77.

The Carson Middle School advanced band participated in "Music in the Parks" competition at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom on Saturday, May 11 and earned top honors.

The CMS Advanced Band earned a superior rating from each of the judges. It gets even better. They also earned first place among the field of four middle school bands that competed that day. But wait, there's more!

Out of the field of 11 bands, including a high school band, your students earned the sweepstakes trophy, which means they were the best band at the entire festival!

Nevada lawmakers hosted a town hall style meeting to discuss how to use the Silver State's tax dollars in the best way possible.

Enrollment at Nevada Performance Academy, a Nevada tuition free charter school in Carson City that will serve grades 7-12, begins Wednesday. In an effort to ensure high quality teaching and learning, and because of predicted space constraints, the Academy will limit first-year enrollment in the blended components of its academic program, which is face-to-face instruction and participation in extracurricular classes.

Legendary rock band “War” will headline this summer’s Concert Under the Stars taking place Tuesday, July 9 outdoors behind Café at Adele’s. The annual event benefits Carson City’s Greenhouse Project. The gates open at 5 p.m. and the music begins at 6:30 p.m.

The Carson City District Attorney's Office presented the mock trial of State v. Alexander T. Wolf at Carson Montessori School on Monday for the 4th through 6th grade classes.

As part of the Office's community outreach and partnership with local schools, the District Attorney's Office created the mock trial based on the story of the “Three Little Pigs” to teach students about the criminal justice system as well as increase critical thinking and reasoning skills, according to a news release.

More than a decade ago, a Western Nevada College physics professor’s dream, a desire by college students to learn about astronomy, and the Carson City community's willingness to help make dreams come true, all converged to create the Jack C. Davis Observatory.

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School eighth graders Margaret Rich, vice president student council and Alejandro Escobar, council secretary, recently spent a day with the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Former Carson Mayor Harold Jacobsen was honored and given a presentation and took pictures with the board and the St. Teresa students.

“Always Lost: A Meditation on War” has returned home to Carson City and was given full honors Wednesday at the Nevada Legislature.

Western Nevada College’s acclaimed creative writing/photographic exhibition about the costs of war will be on display in the Nevada Legislative Building’s second-floor atrium weekdays through May 3.

The Carson High School Band and Choir Ensembles earned big awards in Bay Area competitions earlier this month. The ensembles will be recognized at the Carson City School District board meeting, Tuesday, April 23 at Carson High School Senator Square; 7 p.m.

Earlier today, Reno City Councilman Oscar Delgado testified before the Senate Committee on Finance. Delgado spoke in favor of Senate Bill 398, a measure that would help fund the implementation of the AfterSchool KidzLitz literacy program in Nevada Boys and Girls Clubs.

“Education does not stop at three o’clock,” Delgado said.

Two free lectures by science experts - one about the violent geologic history of Lake Tahoe, another concerning global warming, will highlight the many free activities at Western Nevada College during Earth Week, April 22-27.
Renewable energy exhibits, an organic gardening lecture, alternative fuel vehicles and a tree planting ceremony will also be featured.

“Many diverse and interesting activities will be offered,” said Valerie Andersen, WNC public service librarian and college Earth Week event coordinator. Students, faculty and the public are invited to attend.

An action-packed week filled with music, arts, books, Nevada political history and more will be featured as Carson City Library celebrates National Library week.

Special events kick off Monday, 6 p.m., at the library auditorium with “The Lure of Music, a Human Universal” presented by internationally-recognized music scholar Fredric Lieberman, Ph.D., a distinguished professor of music at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Retired Nevada Senator Valerie Wiener introduced Senate Bill 414 to the Senate Committee on Judiciary today. The bill would work to prevent minors from “transmitting or distributing certain images of a violent offense committed against another minor” and would also revise the definition of cyber-bullying.
