NDOW: Lake Tahoe bears at Incline Village still active as Christmas approaches
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Sun, 12/22/2013 - 3:10pmIt has been a busy week at Incline Village on the north shore of Lake Tahoe for Nevada Department of Wildlife game wardens dealing with nuisance bears. On Thursday, NDOW euthanized a 263-pound male black bear and on Sunday a bear was released in the wild south of Gardnerville.
The euthanized bear was positively identified as one that had been breaking into and entering cars, at least one home and some garages in an Incline neighborhood, according to a Nevada Department of Wildlife news release.

Robin Stark's 'Ceramic Reflections' featured at Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 12/06/2013 - 10:53amHenderson artist Robin Stark’s ceramics are featured in the Nevada Arts Council’s OXS Gallery in Carson City from Dec. 9 through Jan. 31.
The work featured in Robin Stark: Ceramic Reflections represents a recent trend in which the artist’s ceramic forms become entirely sculptural. From the time spent in her first ceramic class in college, the material continues to engage Stark with its versatile and aesthetic qualities.
“The work fluctuates, presenting the viewer different considerations of what can be made in clay,” Stark said.

Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 10/31/2013 - 6:43amAt 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning a group of well bundled people met in downtown Carson City for the Fall Art Walk. If you missed the walk or forgot to take notes, here is a brief recap.
1) Comma Coffee – The “Backseat Gallery” in the back was featuring art by Barry Mitchell. It was a great opportunity to get a hot coffee too.
2) Legislative Grounds – A viewing of the statues of Kit Carson and Abraham Curry and the Nevada Law Enforcement Officers Memorial along the beautiful ground of the Nevada State Legislature.
Local Companies Recognized at the NNDA Pioneer Awards

This signature event also saw the largest attendance for this event in NNDA history with over 340 celebrating these announcements. In addition to this annual recognition businesses were selected in 9 different categories. For six weeks NNDA collected over 50 nominees in those categories with the winners being announced at the Pioneer Awards Banquet.

Each poem will be followed by a related big-band tune. The event will be on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 7:30-9:30 p.m., at Comma Coffee, 312 S. Carson Street, across the street from the state legislature building in Carson City. The event will be held outdoors in the adjacent courtyard, weather permitting. New series debuts at OXS Gallery with Hackett-Morgan work- Reception Aug. 15

The Arts Council will host an artist talk at 6:15 p.m. and a reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 15.
“A Western Dependence” features two series of paintings and prints created over the last 14 years by Hackett-Morgan who is drawn to neglected billboards, closed roadside attractions, and other evidence of abandonment in the desert west,” said Susan Boskoff, executive director of the Arts Council.

Cuchine will be discussing his love and talent for collecting Nevada art as well as each of the 35 pieces in Wally’s World: The Loneliest Art Collection in Nevada, an exhibit currently featured at the History Center.

Service today for Nevada advocate for elderly, former Carson City Supervisor Janice Ayres

Ayres, a longtime Carson City resident and champion for the elderly and disabled in Nevada, will be held today, Friday, in Carson City at the First Presbyterian Church on the corner of Musser and Division streets.
A gathering for family and friends of Ayres will follow at Cafe at Adele's, 1112 North Carson Street.
Ayres was 92 when she died May 27, 2013.
Mattew Couper artwork at Nevada Arts Council's OXS June 3 to July 26; Reception and talk June 27

Couper came from New Zealand to explore periods of Western art history. Through what he calls painterly investigations, he said, he has discovered that history often repeats. In the series, Valley of The Dry Bones, Couper uses the established Spanish Colonial narrative traditions to discuss the space between myth, religion and art politics. The Arts Council will host an artist talk at 6:30 p.m. and a reception from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

AB 312: An Abuse of Power

It is a despicable piece of legislation motivated more by vindictiveness on his part towards the citizens of Carson City, coupled in part by his ineffectiveness as a state legislator.

Next month is Bike Month and there are plenty of activities planned in Carson City. We kick off on April 24 with Nevada Moves Day at the State Legislature.
Muscle Powered is organizing exhibits in the front foyer of the legislative building highlighting Nevada groups working for better walking and biking. Participants include the Reno Bike Project, Safe Routes to Schools, the Carson Valley Trails Association and more.
Nevada GOP Central Committee hosts Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker at dinner

Earlier in the day Nevada's GOP Central Committee members attended sessions at the Nevada State Legislature.
Saturday's activities include caucus meetings and a keynote address by Tea Party organizer Heather Gass.
Solitary Confinement on Nevada Inmates Could Be Limited

Senate Bill 107 would limit the use of solitary confinement on Nevada inmates, removing the ability to use isolation as a punishment and limiting the amount of time spent in solitary confinement. According to Nevada Department of Corrections information, Nevada has more than 300 inmates in ‘maximum’ custody, which is about two percent of the state’s prison population.

But, he told the group of about 60 people gathered Monday at the State Legislature, “It is a fear of each other that drives us to own more and more guns.”
