St. Teresa of Avila hosts Catholic Community Feast this Thursday

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community is hosting their annual parish feast on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2015 after the 5:30PM Mass and includes “A very nice tradition of an international potluck dinner,” said Fr. Chuck Durante, Pastor.

This year’s special feast includes the 500th anniversary celebration of St. Teresa of Avila’s birth, the community’s namesake. Please join the parish in celebrating this 5th century birthday.

Breaking bread to feed the poor: Interfaith Community Picnic and Food Drive

The Interfaith Community of Carson City announces their seventh annual interfaith potluck picnic and food drive on the lawn of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. All members from the community are invited to attend this Labor Day.

Seventh grader Kyle Navarro of Carson City Named AAA Nevada Patroller of the Year

Kyle Navarro, a St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church seventh grader, was honored Thursday by AAA Nevada for his leadership qualities as School Safety Patroller of the Year in Carson City.

Kyle has exhibited sound safety skills by making sure students get in and out of cars safely around the school drop off and pick up zone, said Haldon Johnson, AAA Business Manager.

Dayton teen sets her sights on championship trophy

Laura Pradere, 13, will go into this weekend’s U.S Bird Dog Western States National Championships with the confidence of one championship already under her belt.
“I’m still kind of nervous,” she said, “but I think having one national title is an advantage.”

She won the youth division of the North American Gun Dog Association championship in Wiggins, Colo., last month. This competition will be in Mound House, just up the road from the Pradere Ranch in Dayton, where her family has lived for five generations.

Carson City’s St. Teresa of Avila volunteers recognized by Diocese of Reno

Each Spring, the Diocese of Reno celebrates its volunteers with its Annual Diocesan Recognition Banquet. For 2015, Bishop Randolph Calvo, second from left, honored 61 volunteers from across the diocese for their untiring work to help their parishes and missions. For Carson City’s St. Teresa of Avila parish, Betty White, third from left, and Irma Crookshanks were recognized for the untold hours they spend at St. Teresa in assisting Father Charles Durante, left. It was noted Betty has been a parishioner of St. Teresa for 82 years.

Public invited to inaugural celebration Monday at the Nevada State Capitol building

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval will host the Inaugural Celebration of the Governor and Constitutional Officers on Monday, Jan. 5. The program will begin at noon on the capitol steps in Carson City and the official ceremony starts at 12:30 p.m.

Hundreds of Carson City runners hit the road before dinner at Thanksgiving Turkey Trot

Dozens of families made up hundreds of runners and walkers of all ages who met under sunny skies at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City this Thanksgiving Day for the 2014 Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot.

The 8K, 5K and Kids Gobble Wobble Fun Run, hosted by St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School, was designed for those who wanted to get some exercise ahead of the parades, pies, football games and big Thanksgiving Day meals. See the video below.

Funeral services for Nevada Assemblyman Pete Livermore of Carson City will be Monday, Oct. 27, 11 a.m., at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Livermore died Monday, Oct. 20, 2014 at Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center. He was 73.

Carson City schools begin 'Trick or Treat' Halloween food drive for FISH

Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, will begin its annual “Trick or Treat for FISH” food drive Wednesday, Oct. 15. Carson City schools will participate in a contest for the students to collect non-perishable food to replenish the inventory at the FISH food bank. The food drive will run until Nov. 3 and will give FISH a boost for the high demand of the holiday season.

St. Teresa of Avila's annual Fall Fest a Carson City tradition

Sunday was the annual Fall Fest at Fuji Park in Carson City hosted by St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community Church in Carson City. Though the skies had smoke and even a few rain drops, the spirit was alive with plenty of food, games, booths, crafts and music entertainment.

Shaheen Beauchamp Builders is setting the original 1873 St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community church bell in its new home on Lompa Lane in Carson City.

The bell was graciously donated by the Brewery Arts Center last year and we are anxiously waiting for it to ring again this spring. St. Teresa of Avila was established in Carson City in 1858.

Lynn Palma Barbagallo Phalan, 71 years old, wife of James Phalan, died Tuesday, November 12, 2013 in Carson City, Nev.

Lynn was born Sept. 28, 1942 in Pittsburg, Calif. Among her survivors are her husband James Michael Phalan, her brother William (Lisa) Barbagallo, sister Noreen Byrd, daughter Michelle (Tim) Cleveland, sons Jeff Phalan, and Jim (Gabriela); step children Dave (Debbie) Phalan, Janine Phalan, and Greg (Dora) Phalan, grandchildren Nathan and Ashley Edwards, Zoey Cleveland, Emily Lawrence, Sofia, Jimmy, Jamie, Sara, Holly and Tierra Phalan.
 

Free multi-cultural Fall celebration Sunday at Fuji Park in Carson City

The annual Basque Festival at Fuji Park is evolving this year to become a multi-cultural celebration this Sunday, Sept. 15, that includes Basque, Italian, Mexican and Nevada barbecue cuisine.

Dubbed the “Fall Festival,” this family-friendly event offers a “Kid Zone” with 5 bounce houses, arts and crafts tables, a Home Depot build project, various games, kid karaoke, caricatures, face painting and a balloon artist. Adults can enjoy live music and dancing as well as Bingo in the Pavilion with various prize levels available.

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School students spend day with Carson City leaders

St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School eighth graders Margaret Rich, vice president student council and Alejandro Escobar, council secretary, recently spent a day with the Carson City Board of Supervisors.

Former Carson Mayor Harold Jacobsen was honored and given a presentation and took pictures with the board and the St. Teresa students.
