With cuts made to the program because of the sequester, Head Start in Nevada will receive a $2.5 million boost after the Department of Health and Human Services announced Thursday it will receive a grant.

The $2,559,327 grant is designed to expand projects in Nevada and will be funded through the University of Nevada Reno, said Sen. Harry Reid.

After more than a year plagued with internal problems and public criticism, Carson City Animal Services has entered into a partnership with the Nevada Humane Society in what Carson City Manager Nick Marano calls "a new chapter in animal services in the capital city."

Carson City has reached a conceptual agreement with the Nevada Humane Society, Nevada’s first and most highly regarded animal welfare group, in a new partnership to lead Carson City’s Animal Services, to include adoptions, shelter, and regulation services, said Marano.

The Nevada Performance Academy, founded by former Nevada state superintendent, Gene Paslov will be holding an informative meeting on August 4, 6:15 p.m. at VT Williams and Associates, 3470 G.S. Richards Blvd.

Parents interested in enrollment or just seeking information are being asked to attend and bring nessecary documents such as birth certificate, utility bill, immunization records, and I.D, should they decide to enroll as space is limited to only 24 children per grade level.

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of August. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Aug. 1 through Aug. 14.

Saturday evenings are stellar this summer at the Jack C. Davis Observatory of Western Nevada College. A series of free slide lectures will be offered through August 23. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. lectures.

The move is complete and experiments are underway in the University of Nevada, Reno’s new Earthquake Engineering Laboratory. The College of Engineering hosted a grand opening today celebrating the new lab space in the world-renowned seismic engineering facility.

Winning Best Taste for this year's Taste of Downtown is bittersweet for the owners of Sassafras, as their landlord has given them until the end of July to vacate that space.

"We are devastated, shocked, heartbroken," said Scott Doerr, who owns the business with partner and chef Tony Fish.

Doerr said they were presented with a termination of tenancy on June 16 by Double Eagle Cubed LLC, the entity that purchased the building from Magpie Properties, LLC last year.

If you want to lose weight, you must shift your attitude and activities to create the change. If you want to make more money in business, you must adjust what you are doing (even if it’s finding a way to clone existing customers and magnify existing success). The point is you must do something you have never done before. This involves feeling a little bit of something icky — fear.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency announced Tuesday the launch of a new online tree removal permit application and credit card payment system that can be accessed through their website at trpa.org.

The ComputerCorps "Every-Home-A-Classroom" TechCamp is an annual summer program for youth 10-15 years old. For the past 14 years, this 2-week program gives kids the opportunity to learn about computer recycling, testing and assembly while building a computer system they can take home or give to a needy family at the end of camp.

The Nevada Business Group on Health announces its Building Common Knowledge presentation on the topic of Value-Based Benefit Design, a health benefit savings strategy that draws on a variety of incentive strategies that address the way health insurance plans are structured and utilized by employees and their dependents.

Interested in learning more about gardening in the high desert?

This year, Hungry Mother Organics will be working with Community Roots to offer community garden space at 170 River Road. Organizers plan to have a large central area where beginning gardeners can learn the basics of backyard food production from on-site gardening experts, and where volunteers can work in exchange for fresh produce.

For more advanced gardeners, a limited number of individual plots will be offered. There will be an organizational meeting on Tuesday, May 20 at 7 p.m., in the warehouse at 170 River Road.

Building on the Carson City library’s month-long focus on engineering, on May 14 at 6:30 p.m. Library Director Sena Loyd will facilitate a panel discussion among five local professional engineers, four women and a gentleman about the ways females of all ages can succeed and advance in the field of engineering and be recognized for life-changing contributions as engineers and leaders.

The talk will be hosted from the Carson City Library’s business branch, the Business Resource Innovation Center (the BRIC) located at 108 E. Proctor St.
